A sower went out to sow

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 13: 1-23

Jesus left the house and sat by the lakeside, but such large crowds gathered round him that he got into a boat and sat there. The people all stood on the beach, and he told them many things in parables.

  He said, ‘Imagine a sower going out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen, anyone who has ears!’

  Then the disciples went up to him and asked, ‘Why do you talk to them in parables?’ ‘Because’ he replied, ‘the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you, but they are not revealed to them. For anyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case this prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled:

You will listen and listen again, but not understand,

see and see again, but not perceive.

For the heart of this nation has grown coarse,

their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes,

for fear they should see with their eyes,

hear with their ears,

understand with their heart,

and be converted

and be healed by me.

‘But happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.

  ‘You, therefore, are to hear the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was sown in his heart: this is the man who received the seed on the edge of the path. The one who received it on patches of rock is the man who hears the word and welcomes it at once with joy. But he has no root in him, he does not last; let some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, and he falls away at once. The one who received the seed in thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the lure of riches choke the word and so he produces nothing. And the one who received the seed in rich soil is the man who hears the word and understands it; he is the one who yields a harvest and produces now a hundredfold, now sixty, now thirty.’

The whole creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons

A Reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 8: 18-23

I think that what we suffer in this life can never be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us. The whole creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons. It was not for any fault on the part of creation that it was made unable to attain its purpose, it was made so by God; but creation still retains the hope of being freed, like us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the children of God. From the beginning till now the entire creation, as we know, has been groaning in one great act of giving birth; and not only creation, but all of us who possess the first-fruits of the Spirit, we too groan inwardly as we wait for our bodies to be set free.

Thus says the Lord: ‘As the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating, so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do.’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “சீடர் குருவை விடப் பெரியவர் அல்ல. பணியாளரும் தம் தலைவரை விடப் பெரியவர் அல்ல. சீடர் தம் குருவைப் போல் ஆகட்டும்; பணியாளர் தம் தலைவரைப் போல் ஆகட்டும். அதுவே போதும். வீட்டுத் தலைவரையே பெயல்செபூல் என அழைப்பவர்கள் வீட்டாரைப் பற்றி இன்னும் தரக் குறைவாகப் பேச மாட்டார்களா?

எனவே, அவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சவேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் வெளிப் படாதவாறு மூடப்பட்டிருப்பது ஒன்றும் இல்லை; அறியமுடியாதவாறு மறைந்திருப்பதும் ஒன்றும் இல்லை. நான் உங்களுக்கு இருளில் சொல்வதை நீங்கள் ஒளியில் கூறுங்கள். காதோடு காதாய்க் கேட்பதை வீட்டின் மேல் தளத்திலிருந்து அறிவியுங்கள்.

மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் என்னை ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவரை விண்ணுலகில் இருக்கும் என் தந்தையின் முன்னிலையில் நானும் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வேன். மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் என்னை மறுதலிப்பவர் எவரையும் விண்ணுலகில் இருக்கிற என் தந்தையின் முன்னிலையில் நானும் மறுதலிப்பேன்.”

யாக்கோபு தம் புதல்வர்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டுக் கூறியது: “இதோ நான் என் இனத்தவரோடு சேர்க்கப்பட இருக்கிறேன். என்னை என் தந்தையருடன் இத்தியனான எப்ரோனின் நிலத்திலுள்ள குகையில் அடக்கம் செய்யுங்கள். அது கானான் நாட்டில் மம்ரே பகுதிக்கு அருகேயுள்ள மக்பேலாவின் நிலத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. ஆபிரகாம் இத்தியனான எப்ரோனிடமிருந்து அந்த நிலத்தை கல்லறை நிலத்திற்கென விலைக்கு வாங்கினார். அங்கே ஆபிரகாமையும் அவர் மனைவி சாராவையும் அடக்கம் செய்தனர்; அங்கு ஈசாக்கையும் அவர் மனைவி ரெபேக்காவையும் அடக்கம் செய்தனர்; அங்கேதான் நானும் லேயாவை அடக்கம் செய்துள்ளேன். அந்நிலமும் அக்கல்லறையும் இத்தியரிடமிருந்து விலைக்கு வாங்கப்பெற்றவை."

யாக்கோபு தம் புதல்வர்களுக்குக் கட்டளைகளை வழங்கி முடித்தபின், தம் கால்களைப் படுக்கையினுள் மடக்கிக்கொண்டு உயிர் நீத்து, தம் இனத்தாருடன் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்டார்.

அப்பொழுது, யோசேப்பின் சகோதரர் தங்கள் தந்தை இறந்துவிட்டதைக் கண்டு, “யோசேப்பு நாம் அவருக்குச் செய்த அனைத்துத் தீமைகளையும் கருதி, இப்பொழுது நம்மை வெறுத்து உறுதியாகப் பழிவாங்குவார்” என்று எண்ணினர். எனவே அவர்கள் யோசேப்புக்கு இவ்வாறு செய்தி அனுப்பினர்: “உம் தந்தை இறப்பதற்குமுன், ‘உன் சகோதரர் உனக்குத் தீங்கிழைத்ததன் மூலம் உண்டான குற்றப்பழியையும், பாவத்தையும் மன்னித்துவிடு என்று யோசேப்புக்குச் சொல்லுங்கள்’ என்று எங்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டார். ஆகவே, இப்பொழுது உம் தந்தையின் கடவுளுடைய அடியார்களாகிய எங்களின் குற்றப்பழியை மன்னித்தருளும்.” அவர்கள் இதைத் தம்மிடம் அறிவித்தபோது யோசேப்பு அழுதார்.

அவர் சகோதரரும் அழுது அவர்முன் தாள் பணிந்து, ‘நாங்கள் உம் அடிமைகள்’ என்றனர். யோசேப்பு அவர்களிடம், “அஞ்சாதீர்கள்; நான் கடவுளுக்கு இணையானவனா? நீங்கள் எனக்குத் தீமை செய்ய நினைத்தீர்கள். ஆனால் கடவுள் அதை இன்று நடப்பதுபோல், திரளான மக்களை உயிரோடு காக்கும் பொருட்டு நன்மையாக மாற்றிவிட்டார். ஆகவே இப்பொழுது அஞ்சவேண்டாம். உங்களையும் உங்கள் குழந்தைகளையும் நான் பேணிக் காப்பேன்” என்றார். இப்படியாக அவர் அவர்களுக்கு ஆறுதல் அளித்தார்; அவர்களுடன் இதமாகப் பேசிவந்தார்.

யோசேப்பும் அவர் தந்தையின் வீட்டாரும் எகிப்தில் குடியிருந்தனர். யோசேப்பு நூற்றுப் பத்து ஆண்டுகள் உயிர் வாழ்ந்தார். எப்ராயிமின் மூன்றாம் தலைமுறையைப் பார்க்கும் வரையிலும் மனாசேயின் மகன் மாக்கிரின் குழந்தைகள் தம் மடியில் விளையாடும் வரையிலும் யோசேப்பு உயிர் வாழ்ந்தார்.

யோசேப்பு தம் சகோதரரிடம், “நான் சாகும் வேளை வந்துவிட்டது. ஆனால் கடவுள் உங்களைக் கனிவுடன் சந்திக்க உறுதியாக வருவார். ஆபிரகாம், ஈசாக்கு, யாக்கோபுக்குத் தாம் கொடுப்பதாக வாக்களித்த நாட்டிற்கு இந்த நாட்டிலிருந்து அவர் உங்களை அழைத்துச் செல்வார்” என்றார். மீண்டும் யோசேப்பு, “கடவுள் உங்களைக் கனிவுடன் சந்திக்க உறுதியாக வருவார். அப்பொழுது நீங்கள் என் எலும்புகளை இங்கிருந்து எடுத்துச் செல்லுங்கள்” என்று சொல்லி, இஸ்ரயேல் புதல்வரிடமிருந்து உறுதிமொழி பெற்றுக்கொண்டார். யோசேப்பு தம் நூற்றுப்பத்தாம் வயதில் இறந்தார்.

Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: ‘The disciple is not superior to his teacher, nor the slave to his master. It is enough for the disciple that he should grow to be like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, what will they not say of his household?

  ‘Do not be afraid of them therefore. For everything that is now covered will be uncovered, and everything now hidden will be made clear. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the daylight; what you hear in whispers, proclaim from the housetops.

  ‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; fear him rather who can destroy both body and soul in hell. Can you not buy two sparrows for a penny? And yet not one falls to the ground without your Father knowing. Why, every hair on your head has been counted. So there is no need to be afraid; you are worth more than hundreds of sparrows.

  ‘So if anyone declares himself for me in the presence of men, I will declare myself for him in the presence of my Father in heaven. But the one who disowns me in the presence of men, I will disown in the presence of my Father in heaven.’

A Reading from the book of Genesis 49:29-33,50:15-26 

Jacob gave his sons these instructions, ‘I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me near my fathers, in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, in the cave in the field at Machpelah, opposite Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial-plot. There Abraham was buried and his wife Sarah. There Isaac was buried and his wife Rebekah. There I buried Leah. I mean the field and the cave in it that were bought from the sons of Heth.’

  When Jacob had finished giving his instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, and breathing his last was gathered to his people.

  Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers said, ‘What if Joseph intends to treat us as enemies and repay us in full for all the wrong we did him?’ So they sent this message to Joseph: ‘Before your father died he gave us this order: “You must say to Joseph: Oh forgive your brothers their crime and their sin and all the wrong they did you.” Now therefore, we beg you, forgive the crime of the servants of your father’s God.’ Joseph wept at the message they sent to him.

  His brothers came themselves and fell down before him. ‘We present ourselves before you’ they said ‘as your slaves.’ But Joseph answered them, ‘Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God’s place? The evil you planned to do me has by God’s design been turned to good, that he might bring about, as indeed he has, the deliverance of a numerous people. So you need not be afraid; I myself will provide for you and your dependants.’ In this way he reassured them with words that touched their hearts.

  So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father’s family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children, as also the children of Machir, Manasseh’s son, who were born on Joseph’s lap. At length Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die; but God will be sure to remember you kindly and take you back from this country to the land that he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’ And Joseph made Israel’s sons swear an oath, ‘When God remembers you with kindness be sure to take my bones from here.’

  Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; they embalmed him and laid him in his coffin in Egypt.
