The sons of Israel complain in the desert

A reading from the book of Numbers 11:4-15 

The sons of Israel began to wail, ‘Who will give us meat to eat?’ they said. ‘Think of the fish we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic! Here we are wasting away, stripped of everything; there is nothing but manna for us to look at!’

  The manna was like coriander seed, and had the appearance of bdellium. The people went round gathering it, and ground it in a mill or crushed it with a pestle; it was then cooked in a pot and made into pancakes. It tasted like cake made with oil. When the dew fell on the camp at night-time, the manna fell with it.

  Moses heard the people wailing, every family at the door of its tent. The anger of the Lord flared out, and Moses greatly worried over this. And he spoke to the Lord:

  ‘Why do you treat your servant so badly? Why have I not found favour with you, so that you load on me the weight of all this nation? Was it I who conceived all this people, was it I who gave them birth, that you should say to me, “Carry them in your bosom, like a nurse with a baby at the breast, to the land that I swore to give their fathers”? Where am I to find meat to give to all this people, when they come worrying me so tearfully and say, “Give us meat to eat”? I am not able to carry this nation by myself alone; the weight is too much for me. If this is how you want to deal with me, I would rather you killed me! If only I had found favour in your eyes, and not lived to see such misery as this!’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு பேதுருவையும் யாக்கோபையும் அவர் சகோதரரான யோவானையும் ஓர் உயர்ந்த மலைக்குத் தனிமையாகக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு போனார். அங்கே அவர்கள்முன் அவர் தோற்றம் மாறினார். அவரது முகம் கதிரவனைப் போல் ஒளிர்ந்தது. அவருடைய ஆடைகள் ஒளி போன்று வெண்மையாயின.

இதோ! மோசேயும் எலியாவும் அவர்களுக்கு முன் தோன்றி இயேசுவோடு உரையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தனர்.

பேதுரு இயேசுவைப் பார்த்து, “ஆண்டவரே, நாம் இங்கேயே இருப்பது நல்லது. உமக்கு ஒன்றும் மோசேக்கு ஒன்றும் எலியாவுக்கு ஒன்றுமாக மூன்று கூடாரங்களை அமைக்கட்டுமா? இது உமக்கு விருப்பமா?” என்றார்.

அவர் தொடர்ந்து பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்த போது ஒளிமயமான மேகம் ஒன்று அவர்கள் மேல் நிழலிட்டது. அந்த மேகத்தினின்று, “என் அன்பார்ந்த மைந்தர் இவரே. இவர் பொருட்டு நான் பூரிப்படைகிறேன். இவருக்குச் செவிசாயுங்கள்” என்று ஒரு குரல் ஒலித்தது.

அதைக் கேட்டதும் சீடர்கள் மிகவும் அஞ்சி முகங்குப்புற விழுந்தார்கள்.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம் வந்து அவர்களைத் தொட்டு, “எழுந்திருங்கள், அஞ்சாதீர்கள்” என்றார். அவர்கள் நிமிர்ந்து பார்த்தபோது இயேசு ஒருவரைத் தவிர வேறு எவரையும் காணவில்லை.

அவர்கள் மலையிலிருந்து இறங்கிவந்த போது இயேசு, “மானிடமகன் இறந்து உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படும் வரை இக்காட்சியைப் பற்றி எவருக்கும் சொல்லக் கூடாது” என அவர்களுக்குக் கட்டளையிட்டார்.

விண்ணிலிருந்து வந்த இக்குரலொலியை நாங்களே கேட்டோம்.

திருத்தூதர் பேதுரு எழுதிய இரண்டாம் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 1: 16-19

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வல்லமையையும் வருகையையும் பற்றி நாங்கள் உங்களுக்குத் தெரிவித்தபோது சூழ்ச்சியாகப் புனைந்த கதைகளை ஆதாரமாகக் கொண்டு பேசவில்லை. நாங்கள் அவரது மாண்பை நேரில் கண்டவர்கள்.

We heard this ourselves, spoken from heaven

2 Peter 1:16-19 

It was not any cleverly invented myths that we were repeating when we brought you the knowledge of the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; we had seen his majesty for ourselves. He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory itself spoke to him and said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.’ We heard this ourselves, spoken from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.

  So we have confirmation of what was said in prophecies; and you will be right to depend on prophecy and take it as a lamp for lighting a way through the dark until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.

His robe was white as snow

A reading from the book of Daniel 7:9-10,13-14 

As I watched:

Thrones were set in place

and one of great age took his seat.

His robe was white as snow,

the hair of his head as pure as wool.

His throne was a blaze of flames,

its wheels were a burning fire.

A stream of fire poured out,

issuing from his presence.

A thousand thousand waited on him,

ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

A court was held

and the books were opened.

I gazed into the visions of the night.

And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven,

one like a son of man.

He came to the one of great age

and was led into his presence.

On him was conferred sovereignty,

glory and kingship,

and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants.

His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty

which shall never pass away,

nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

குறுநில மன்னன் ஏரோது, இயேசுவைப் பற்றிய செய்தியைக் கேள்வியுற்றான். அவன் தன் ஊழியரிடம், “இவர் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான்தான். இறந்த யோவானைக் கடவுள் உயிர்பெற்றெழச் செய்தார். இதனால்தான் இந்த வல்ல செயல்களை இவர் செய்கிறார்” என்று கூறினான்.

ஏரோது தன் சகோதரனான பிலிப்பின் மனைவியாகிய ஏரோதியாவின் பொருட்டு யோவானைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்திருந்தான். ஏனெனில் யோவான் அவனிடம், “நீர் அவளை வைத்திருப்பது முறையல்ல” என்று சொல்லி வந்தார். ஏரோது அவரைக் கொலை செய்ய விரும்பினான்; ஆயினும் மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினர் அவரை ஓர் இறைவாக்கினர் எனக் கருதியதால் அவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சினான்.

ஏரோதின் பிறந்த நாளில் ஏரோதியாளின் மகள் அவையினர் நடுவில் நடனம் ஆடி ஏரோதை அகமகிழச் செய்தாள். அதனால் அவள் எதைக் கேட்டாலும் அளிப்பதாக அவன் ஒரு வாக்குறுதியை ஆணையிட்டு அறிவித்தான். அவள் தன் தாய் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தபடியே, “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து இங்கேயே எனக்குக் கொடும்” என்று கேட்டாள். இதைக் கேட்ட அரசன் வருந்தினான்; ஆனாலும் தான் விருந்தினர்முன் ஆணையிட்டதால் அதை அவளுக்குக் கொடுக்கக் கட்டளையிட்டான்; ஆள் அனுப்பிச் சிறையில் இருந்த யோவானின் தலையை வெட்டச் செய்தான்; அவருடைய தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு வரச் செய்து அதைச் சிறுமியிடம் கொடுத்தான். அவளும் அதைத் தன் தாயிடம் கொண்டு சென்றாள்.

யோவானுடைய சீடர் வந்து அவருடைய உடலை எடுத்துச் சென்று அடக்கம் செய்தனர்; பின்னர் இந்நிகழ்ச்சியினை இயேசுவிடம் போய் அறிவித்தனர்.
