முகமலர்ச்சியோடு கொடுப்பவரே கடவுளின் அன்புக்கு உரியவர்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய இரண்டாம் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 9: 6-10

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

குறைவாக விதைப்பவர் குறைவாக அறுவடை செய்வார். நிறைவாக விதைப்பவர் நிறைவாக அறுவடை செய்வார். இதைத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள். ஒவ்வொருவரும் தம்முள் தீர்மானித்தபடியே கொடுக்கட்டும். மனவருத்தத்தோடோ கட்டாயத்தினாலோ கொடுக்க வேண்டாம். முகமலர்ச்சியோடு கொடுப்பவரே கடவுளின் அன்புக்கு உரியவர். கடவுள் உங்களை எல்லா நலன்களாலும் நிரப்ப வல்லவர். எந்தச் சூழ்நிலையிலும் எப்போதும் தேவையானதெல்லாம் உங்களுக்குத் தருவார்; அனைத்து நற்செயல்களையும் செய்வதற்குத் தேவையானது எல்லாம் உங்களுக்கு மிகுதியாகவே தருவார். “ஒருவர் ஏழைகளுக்கு வாரி வாரி வழங்கும்போது அவரது நீதி என்றென்றும் நிலைத்திருக்கும்” என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது அல்லவா!

விதைப்பவருக்கு விதையையும், உண்பதற்கு உணவையும் வழங்குபவர், விதைப்பதற்கு வேண்டிய விதைகளை வழங்கி அவை முளைத்து வளரச்செய்து அறச்செயல்களாகிய விளைச்சலை மிகுதியாகத் தருவார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 12: 24-26 

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘I tell you, most solemnly,

unless a wheat grain falls on the ground and dies,

it remains only a single grain;

but if it dies,

it yields a rich harvest.

Anyone who loves his life loses it;

anyone who hates his life in this world

will keep it for the eternal life.

If a man serves me, he must follow me,

wherever I am, my servant will be there too.

If anyone serves me, my Father will honour him.’

God loves a cheerful giver

A reading from the second letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 9:6-10 

Do not forget: thin sowing means thin reaping; the more you sow, the more you reap. Each one should give what he has decided in his own mind, not grudgingly or because he is made to, for God loves a cheerful giver. And there is no limit to the blessings which God can send you – he will make sure that you will always have all you need for yourselves in every possible circumstance, and still have something to spare for all sorts of good works. As scripture says: He was free in almsgiving, and gave to the poor: his good deeds will never be forgotten.

  The one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will provide you with all the seed you want and make the harvest of your good deeds a larger one.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தீர், சீதோன் ஆகிய பகுதிகளை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். அவற்றின் எல்லைப் பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்துவந்த கானானியப் பெண் ஒருவர் அவரிடம் வந்து, “ஐயா, தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்; என் மகள் பேய் பிடித்துக் கொடுமைக்குள்ளாகி இருக்கிறாள்” எனக் கதறினார். ஆனால் இயேசு அவரிடம் ஒரு வார்த்தைகூட மறுமொழியாகச் சொல்லவில்லை.

சீடர்கள் அவரை அணுகி, “நமக்குப் பின்னால் கத்திக்கொண்டு வருகிறாரே, இவரை அனுப்பிவிடும்” என வேண்டினர். அவரோ மறுமொழியாக, “இஸ்ரயேல் குலத்தாருள் காணாமற்போன ஆடுகளாய் இருப்போரிடமே நான் அனுப்பப்பட்டேன்” என்றார்.

ஆனால் அப்பெண் அவர்முன் வந்து பணிந்து, “ஐயா, எனக்கு உதவியருளும்” என்றார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “பிள்ளைகளுக்குரிய உணவை எடுத்து நாய்க்குட்டிகளுக்குப் போடுவது முறையல்ல” என்றார். உடனே அப்பெண், “ஆம் ஐயா, ஆனாலும் தங்கள் உரிமையாளரின் மேசையிலிருந்து விழும் சிறு துண்டுகளை நாய்க்குட்டிகள் தின்னுமே” என்றார்.

இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “அம்மா, உமது நம்பிக்கை பெரிது. நீர் விரும்பியவாறே உமக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார். அந்நேரம் அவர் மகளின் பிணி நீங்கியது.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவர் மோசேயிடம், “இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்கு நான் கொடுக்கும் கானான் நாட்டை உளவு பார்க்க ஆள்களை அனுப்பு; மூதாதையர் குலம் ஒவ்வொன்றிலிருந்தும் அவர்களுள் தலைவனாயிருக்கும் ஒருவனை நீ அனுப்ப வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

நாற்பது நாள்கள் நாட்டை உளவு பார்த்த பின் அவர்கள் திரும்பி வந்தனர். அவர்கள் பாரான் பாலைநிலத்தில் காதேசில் இருந்த மோசேயிடமும் ஆரோனிடமும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பிலுள்ள அனைவரிடமும் வந்தனர்; அவர்களுக்கும் முழு மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்புக்கும் அவர்கள் செய்தி கொண்டு வந்தனர்; நாட்டின் கனியையும் அவர்களுக்குக் காட்டினர். அவர்கள் மோசேயிடம் கூறியது: நீர் எங்களை அனுப்பிய நாட்டுக்கு நாங்கள் சென்று வந்தோம்; அதில் பாலும் தேனும் வழிந்தோடுகிறது; இதுவே அதன் கனி. ஆயினும் அந்நாட்டில் வாழும் மக்கள் வலிமை மிக்கவர்கள்; நகர்கள் அரண் சூழ்ந்தவை, மிகப் பெரியவை; அத்துடன் ஆனாக்கின் வழி மரபினரையும் நாங்கள் அங்குக் கண்டோம்; அமலேக்கியர் நெகேபு நாட்டில் வாழ்கின்றனர்; இத்தியர், எபூசியர், எமோரியர் ஆகியோர் மலைநாட்டில் வாழ்கின்றனர்; கானானியர் கடலருகிலும் யோர்தானை ஒட்டியும் வாழ்கின்றனர்.

காலேபு மோசே முன் மக்களை உடனே அமைதிப்படுத்தி, “நாம் உடனடியாகப் போய் நாட்டைப் பிடித்துக்கொள்வோம்; ஏனெனில் நாம் அதை எளிதில் வென்றுவிட முடியும்” என்றார். ஆனால் அவருடன் சென்றிருந்த ஆள்கள், “நாம் அம்மக்களுக்கு எதிராகப் போக முடியாது; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் நம்மிலும் வலிமை மிக்கவர்கள்” என்றனர்.

இவ்வாறு அவர்கள் உளவு பார்த்து வந்த நாட்டைப் பற்றித் தவறான தகவலை இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தனர்; அவர்கள் கூறியது: உளவு பார்க்கும்படி நாங்கள் சென்றிருந்த நாடு தன் குடிமக்களையே விழுங்குவதாய் இருக்கிறது; அதில் நாங்கள் கண்ட மனிதர் அனைவரும் மிகவும் நெடிய உருவத்தினர்; அத்துடன் நெப்பிலிமில் இருந்து வருகிற ஆனாக்கின் புதல்வராகிய அரக்கரையும் கண்டோம்; எங்கள் பார்வையில் நாங்கள் வெட்டுக்கிளிகள் போன்றிருந்தோம்; அவர்களுக்கும் நாங்கள் அவ்வாறே காணப்பட்டோம்.

உடனே மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு முழுவதும் உரத்தக் குரலில் புலம்பிற்று; மக்கள் அன்றிரவு அழுதுகொண்டே இருந்தனர்.

மேலும் ஆண்டவர் மோசேயிடமும் ஆரோனிடமும் கூறியது: இப்பொல்லாத மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பினர் எதுவரை எனக்கு எதிராக முறுமுறுப்பர்? எனக்கு எதிராக முறுமுறுக்கும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் முறுமுறுப்புகளை நான் கேட்டேன். நீங்கள் அவர்களிடம் சொல்ல வேண்டியது, “ஆண்டவர் கூறுவதாவது: என் உயிர் மேல் ஆணை! என் செவிகளில் படுமாறு நீங்கள் சொன்னதையே நான் உங்களுக்குச் செய்வேன்; எனக்கெதிராக முறுமுறுத்த, இருபது வயதும் அதற்கு மேலும் எண்ணப்பட்ட மொத்தத் தொகையினரான நீங்கள் இப்பாலை நிலத்தில் பிணங்களாக விழுவீர்கள். நீங்கள் குடியிருக்கும்படி நான் வாக்களித்த நாட்டிற்குள் எப்புன்னே மகன் காலேபையும் நூன் மகன் யோசுவாவையும் தவிர ஒருவருமே வரமாட்டீர்கள். நீங்கள் நாட்டை உளவு பார்த்த நாள்களின் எண்ணிக்கைப்படி ஒரு நாளைக்கு ஒரு ஆண்டாக, நாற்பது நாள்களுக்கும் நாற்பது ஆண்டுகள் நீங்கள் குற்றப் பழியைச் சுமப்பீர்கள்; என் வெறுப்பையும் அறிந்துகொள்வீர்கள். ஆண்டவராகிய நானே பேசியுள்ளேன்; எனக்கு எதிராக ஒன்று கூடிய இப்பொல்லாத மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு முழுவதற்கும் இதை நான் கட்டாயம் செய்து முடிப்பேன்; இப்பாலை நிலத்தில் அவர்கள் முற்றிலும் அழிந்தொழிந்து அங்கேயே மடிவார்கள்” என்றார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 15:21-28 

Jesus left Gennesaret and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, ‘Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.’ But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him. ‘Give her what she wants,’ they said ‘because she is shouting after us.’ He said in reply, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.’ But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. ‘Lord,’ she said ‘help me.’ He replied, ‘It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ She retorted, ‘Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.’ Then Jesus answered her, ‘Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.’ And from that moment her daughter was well again.

The spies return from Canaan

A reading from the book of Numbers 13:1-2,25-14:1,26-29,34-35 

The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Paran and said, ‘Send out men, one from each tribe, to make a reconnaissance of this land of Canaan which I am giving to the sons of Israel. Send the leader of each tribe.’

  At the end of forty days, they came back from their reconnaissance of the land. They sought out Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They made their report to them, and to the whole community, and showed them the produce of the country.

  They told them this story, ‘We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey; this is its produce. At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, and we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekite holds the Negeb area, the Hittite, Amorite and Jebusite the highlands, and the Canaanite the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.’

  Caleb harangued the people gathered about Moses: ‘We must march in,’ he said ‘and conquer this land: we are well able to do it.’ But the men who had gone up with him answered, ‘We are not able to march against this people; they are stronger than we are.’ And they began to disparage the country they had reconnoitred to the sons of Israel, ‘The country we went to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Every man we saw there was of enormous size. Yes, and we saw giants there (the sons of Anak, descendants of the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.’

  At this, the whole community raised their voices and cried aloud, and the people wailed all that night.

  The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said:

  ‘I have heard the complaints which the sons of Israel make against me. Say to them, “As I live – it is the Lord who speaks – I will deal with you according to the very words you have used in my hearing. In this wilderness your dead bodies will fall, all you men of the census, all you who were numbered from the age of twenty years and over, you who have complained against me. For forty days you reconnoitred the land. Each day shall count for a year: for forty years you shall bear the burden of your sins, and you shall learn what it means to reject me.” I, the Lord, have spoken: this is how I will deal with this perverse community that has conspired against me. Here in this wilderness, to the last man, they shall die.’
