Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 8:14-21 

The disciples had forgotten to take any food and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. Then he gave them this warninug, ‘Keep your eyes open; be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.’ And they said to one another, ‘It is because we have no bread.’ And Jesus knew it, and he said to them, ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you not yet understand? Have you no perception? Are your minds closed? Have you eyes that do not see, ears that do not hear? Or do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?’ They answered, ‘Twelve.’ ‘And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you collect?’ And they answered, ‘Seven.’ Then he said to them, ‘Are you still without perception?’

Temptation is not from God

A reading from the letter of James 1:12-18 

Happy the man who stands firm when trials come. He has proved himself, and will win the prize of life, the crown that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

  Never, when you have been tempted, say, ‘God sent the temptation’; God cannot be tempted to do anything wrong, and he does not tempt anybody. Everyone who is tempted is attracted and seduced by his own wrong desire. Then the desire conceives and gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it too has a child, and the child is death.

  Make no mistake about this, my dear brothers: it is all that is good, everything that is perfect, which is given us from above; it comes down from the Father of all light; with him there is no such thing as alteration, no shadow of a change. By his own choice he made us his children by the message of the truth so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all that he had created.

பரிசேயர் வந்து இயேசுவோடு வாதாடத் தொடங்கினர்; வானத்திலிருந்து அடையாளம் ஒன்றைக் காட்டும்படி அவரைச் சோதித்தனர். அவர் பெருமூச்சுவிட்டு, “இந்தத் தலைமுறையினர் அடையாளம் கேட்பதேன்? இத்தலைமுறையினருக்கு அடையாளம் எதுவும் கொடுக்கப்படமாட்டாது என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார். அவர்களை விட்டு அகன்று மீண்டும் படகேறி அவர் மறு கரைக்குச் சென்றார்.

உங்களிடையே குறைவான ஞானம் கொண்டிருப்போர் கடவுளிடத்தில் கேட்கட்டும்; அப்பொழுது அவரும் ஞானத்தைக் கொடுப்பார். அவர் முகம் கோணாமல் தாராளமாய் எல்லாருக்கும் கொடுப்பவர். ஆனால் நம்பிக்கையோடு, ஐயப்பாடின்றிக் கேட்க வேண்டும். ஐயப்பாடு கொள்பவர்கள் காற்றினால் அலைக்கழிக்கப்படும் கடல் அலையைப் போன்றவர்கள். எனவே இத்தகைய இரு மனமுள்ள, நிலையற்ற போக்குடையவர்கள் ஆண்டவரிடம் ஏதாவது பெற முடியும் என நினைக்காதிருக்கட்டும்.

தாழ்நிலையில் உள்ள சகோதரர் சகோதரிகள் தாங்கள் உயர்வு பெறும்போது மகிழ்ச்சி அடைவார்களாக! செல்வச் செழிப்பில் இருப்பவர்கள் தாங்கள் தாழ்நிலை அடையும்போதும் மகிழ்ச்சியாய் இருப்பார்களாக! ஏனெனில் செல்வர்கள் புல்வெளிப் பூவைப் போல மறைந்தொழிவார்கள். கதிரவன் எழ, வெயில் ஏறிப் புல் உலர்ந்துபோம். அதன் பூ வதங்கி விழும்; அதன் அழகிய தோற்றமும் அழிந்துவிடும். அவ்வாறே செல்வரும் தம் அலுவல்களில் ஈடுபடும்போதே அழிவுறுவர்.

The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with Jesus; they demanded of him a sign from heaven, to test him. And with a sigh that came straight from the heart he said, ‘Why does this generation demand a sign? I tell you solemnly, no sign shall be given to this generation.’ And leaving them again and re-embarking, he went away to the opposite shore.

Your faith is put to the test so that your patience may make you complete

James 1:1-11 

From James, servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Greetings to the twelve tribes of the Dispersion.

  My brothers, you will always have your trials but, when they come, try to treat them as a happy privilege; you understand that your faith is only put to the test to make you patient, but patience too is to have its practical results so that you will become fully-developed, complete, with nothing missing.

  If there is any one of you who needs wisdom, he must ask God, who gives to all freely and ungrudgingly; it will be given to him. But he must ask with faith, and no trace of doubt, because a person who has doubts is like the waves thrown up in the sea when the wind drives. That sort of person, in two minds, wavering between going different ways, must not expect that the Lord will give him anything.

  It is right for the poor brother to be proud of his high rank, and the rich one to be thankful that he has been humbled, because riches last no longer than the flowers in the grass; the scorching sun comes up, and the grass withers, the flower falls; what looked so beautiful now disappears. It is the same with the rich man: his business goes on; he himself perishes.

ஒரு நாள் தொழுநோயாளர் ஒருவர் இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “நீர் விரும்பினால் எனது நோயை நீக்க உம்மால் முடியும்” என்று முழந்தாள்படியிட்டு வேண்டினார். இயேசு அவர்மீது பரிவுகொண்டு தமது கையை நீட்டி அவரைத் தொட்டு அவரிடம், “நான் விரும்புகிறேன், உமது நோய் நீங்குக!” என்றார். உடனே தொழுநோய் அவரை விட்டு நீங்க, அவர் நலமடைந்தார்.

பிறகு அவரிடம், “இதை யாருக்கும் சொல்ல வேண்டாம், கவனமாய் இரும். ஆனால் நீர் போய் உம்மைக் குருவிடம் காட்டி, நோய் நீங்கியதற்காக மோசே கட்டளையிட்டுள்ள காணிக்கையைச் செலுத்தும். நீர் நலமடைந்துள்ளீர் என்பதற்கு அது சான்றாகும்” என்று மிகக் கண்டிப்பாகக் கூறி உடனடியாக அவரை அனுப்பி விட்டார்.

ஆனால் அவர் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்று இந்தச் செய்தியை எங்கும் அறிவித்துப் பரப்பிவந்தார். அதனால் இயேசு எந்த நகருக்குள்ளும் வெளிப்படையாய்ச் செல்ல முடியவில்லை; வெளியே தனிமையான இடங்களில் தங்கி வந்தார். எனினும் மக்கள் எல்லா இடங்களிலிருந்தும் அவரிடம் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
