We have come with good news to turn you to the living God

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 14: 5-18 

Eventually with the connivance of the authorities a move was made by pagans as well as Jews to make attacks on the apostles and to stone them. When the apostles came to hear of this, they went off for safety to Lycaonia where, in the towns of Lystra and Derbe and in the surrounding country, they preached the Good News.

  A man sat there who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth; and as he listened to Paul preaching, he managed to catch his eye. Seeing that the man had the faith to be cured, Paul said in a loud voice, ‘Get to your feet – stand up’, and the cripple jumped up and began to walk.

  When the crowd saw what Paul had done they shouted in the language of Lycaonia, ‘These people are gods who have come down to us disguised as men.’ They addressed Barnabas as Zeus, and since Paul was the principal speaker they called him Hermes. The priests of Zeus-outside-the-Gate, proposing that all the people should offer sacrifice with them, brought garlanded oxen to the gates. When the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard what was happening they tore their clothes, and rushed into the crowd, shouting, ‘Friends, what do you think you are doing? We are only human beings like you. We have come with good news to make you turn from these empty idols to the living God who made heaven and earth and the sea and all that these hold. In the past he allowed each nation to go its own way; but even then he did not leave you without evidence of himself in the good things he does for you: he sends you rain from heaven, he makes your crops grow when they should, he gives you food and makes you happy.’ Even this speech, however, was scarcely enough to stop the crowd offering them sacrifice.

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “உண்மையான திராட்சைக் கொடிநானே. என் தந்தையே அதை நட்டு வளர்ப்பவர். என்னிடமுள்ள கனி கொடாத கிளைகள் அனைத்தையும் அவர் தறித்துவிடுவார். கனி தரும் அனைத்துக் கிளைகளையும் மிகுந்த கனி தருமாறு கழித்துவிடுவார். நான் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளால் நீங்கள் ஏற்கெனவே தூய்மையாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள். நான் உங்களோடு இணைந்து இருப்பது போல நீங்களும் என்னோடு இணைந்து இருங்கள். கிளைகள் திராட்சைக் கொடியோடு இணைந்து இருந்தாலன்றித் தானாகக் கனி தர இயலாது. அதுபோல நீங்களும் என்னோடு இணைந்திருந்தாலன்றிக் கனி தர இயலாது. நானே திராட்சைக் கொடி; நீங்கள் அதன் கிளைகள். ஒருவர் என்னுடனும் நான் அவருடனும் இணைந்திருந்தால் அவர் மிகுந்த கனி தருவார். என்னைவிட்டுப் பிரிந்து உங்களால் எதுவும் செய்ய இயலாது. என்னோடு இணைந்து இராதவர் கிளையைப் போலத் தறித்து எறியப்பட்டு உலர்ந்து போவார். அக்கிளைகள் கூட்டிச் சேர்க்கப்பட்டு நெருப்பிலிட்டு எரிக்கப்படும். நீங்கள் என்னுள்ளும் என் வார்த்தைகள் உங்களுள்ளும் நிலைத்திருந்தால் நீங்கள் விரும்பிக் கேட்பதெல்லாம் நடக்கும். நீங்கள் மிகுந்த கனி தந்து என் சீடராய் இருப்பதே என் தந்தைக்கு மாட்சி அளிக்கிறது.”

பிள்ளைகளே, நாம் சொல்லிலும் பேச்சிலும் அல்ல, செயலில் உண்மையான அன்பை விளங்கச் செய்வோம். இதனால் நாம் உண்மையைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் என அறிந்துகொள்வோம்; நம் மனச்சான்று நாம் குற்றவாளிகள் எனத் தீர்ப்பளித்தாலும், கடவுள் திருமுன் நம் உள்ளத்தை அமைதிப்படுத்த முடியும். ஏனெனில் கடவுள் நம் மனச்சான்றைவிட மேலானவர்; அனைத்தையும் அறிபவர்.

அன்பார்ந்தவர்களே, நம் மனச்சான்று நாம் குற்றவாளிகள் எனத் தீர்ப்பளிக்காதிருந்தால் நாம் கடவுள் திருமுன் உறுதியான நம்பிக்கை கொண்டிருக்க முடியும். அவரிடம் நாம் எதைக் கேட்டாலும் பெற்றுக்கொள்வோம்; ஏனெனில் அவர் கட்டளைகளைக் கடைப் பிடிக்கிறோம்; அவர் திருமுன் அவருக்கு உகந்தவற்றையே செய்து வருகிறோம். கடவுள் நமக்குக் கொடுத்த கட்டளைப்படி, அவருடைய மகன் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு, ஒருவர் மற்றவரிடம் அன்பு செலுத்த வேண்டும். இதுவே அவரது கட்டளை. கடவுளுடைய கட்டளைகளைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பவர் அவரோடு இணைந்திருக்கிறார்; கடவுளும் அவரோடு இணைந்திருக்கிறார். கடவுள் நம்மோடு இணைந் திருக்கிறார் என்பதை அவர் நமக்கு அருளிய தூய ஆவியால் அறிந்து கொள்கிறோம்.

பர்னபா அவருக்குத் துணை நின்று அவரைத் திருத்தூதர்களிடம் அழைத்துச் சென்றார். பவுல் ஆண்டவரை வழியில் கண்டது பற்றியும் ஆண்டவர் அவரோடு பேசியது பற்றியும் அவர் தமஸ்குவில் இயேசுவின் பெயரால் துணிவுடன் உரையாடியது பற்றியும் பர்னபா அவர்களுக்கு விளக்கிக் கூறினார். அதன்பின் சவுல் அவர்களோடு சேர்ந்து எருசலேமில் அங்கும் இங்குமாகச் சென்று ஆண்டவரின் பெயரால் துணிவுடன் பேசி வந்தார். கிரேக்க மொழி பேசும் யூதரிடம் சென்று அவர்களோடு வாதாடினார். அவர்கள் அவரைக் கொன்றுவிட முயன்றார்கள். ஆனால் அவரோடு இருந்த சகோதரர்கள் இதை அறிந்து அவரைச் செசரியாவுக்குக் கூட்டிச் சென்று அங்கிருந்து தர்சு நகருக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்தார்கள்.

யூதேயா, கலிலேயா, சமாரியா ஆகிய பகுதிகளிலெல்லாம் திருச்சபை வளர்ச்சியுற்று, ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடந்து, அமைதியில் திளைத்து, தூய ஆவியாரின் துணையால் பெருகிவந்தது.

I am the vine, you are the branches.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 15:1-8 

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘I am the true vine,

and my Father is the vinedresser.

Every branch in me that bears no fruit

he cuts away,

and every branch that does bear fruit

he prunes to make it bear even more.

You are pruned already,

by means of the word that I have spoken to you.

Make your home in me, as I make mine in you.

As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself,

but must remain part of the vine,

neither can you unless you remain in me.

I am the vine,

you are the branches.

Whoever remains in me, with me in him,

bears fruit in plenty;

for cut off from me you can do nothing.

Anyone who does not remain in me

is like a branch that has been thrown away – he withers;

these branches are collected and thrown on the fire,

and they are burnt.

If you remain in me

and my words remain in you,

you may ask what you will

The commandment of faith and love.

A reading from the first letter of St.John 3: 18-24.

My children,

our love is not to be just words or mere talk,

but something real and active;

only by this can we be certain

that we are children of the truth

and be able to quieten our conscience in his presence,

whatever accusations it may raise against us,

because God is greater than our conscience and he knows everything.

My dear people,

if we cannot be condemned by our own conscience,

we need not be afraid in God’s presence,

and whatever we ask him,

we shall receive,

because we keep his commandments

and live the kind of life that he wants.

His commandments are these:

that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ

and that we love one another

as he told us to.

Whoever keeps his commandments

lives in God and God lives in him.

We know that he lives in us

by the Spirit that he has given us.

Barnabas explained how the Lord had appeared to Saul on his journey.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles  9: 26-31.

When Saul got to Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him: they could not believe he was really a disciple. Barnabas, however, took charge of him, introduced him to the apostles, and explained how the Lord had appeared to Saul and spoken to him on his journey, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. Saul now started to go round with them in Jerusalem, preaching fearlessly in the name of the Lord. But after he had spoken to the Hellenists, and argued with them, they became determined to kill him. When the brothers knew, they took him to Caesarea, and sent him off from there to Tarsus.

  The churches throughout Judaea, Galilee and Samaria were now left in peace, building themselves up, living in the fear of the Lord, and filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.
