இறைவாக்கினர் எசேக்கியேல் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 18: 21-28

ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது:

தீயவரோ தாம் செய்த பாவங்கள் அனைத்தையும் விட்டு மனம் மாறி, என் நியமங்கள் அனைத்தையும் கைக்கொண்டு, நீதியையும் நேர்மையையும் கடைப்பிடித்தால் அவர்கள் வாழ்வது உறுதி, அவர்கள் சாகார். அவர்கள் இழைத்த தவறுகள் அனைத்தும் அவர்களுக்கெதிராக நினைக்கப்பட மாட்டா. அவர்கள் கடைப்பிடித்த நேர்மையின் பொருட்டு அவர்கள் வாழ்வர். உண்மையில், பொல்லாரின் சாவையா நான் விரும்புகிறேன்? அவர்கள் தம் வழிகளினின்று திரும்பி வாழ வேண்டும் என்பதன்றோ என் விருப்பம்? என்கிறார் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவர்.

நேரியவர் தம் நேரிய நடத்தையினின்று விலகி, தவறிழைத்து, பொல்லாரைப் போல் வெறுக்கத்தக்கவற்றை எல்லாம் செய்தால், அவர்கள் வாழ்வரோ? அவர்கள் கடைப்பிடித்த நேர்மையானது எதுவும் நினைக்கப்படமாட்டாது. அவர்கள் இழைத்த துரோகத்தின் பொருட்டும் செய்த பாவத்தின் பொருட்டும் அவர்கள் சாவர். ஆயினும், ‘தலைவரின் வழி செம்மையானதாக இல்லை’ என்று நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள். இஸ்ரயேல் வீட்டாரே! கேளுங்கள். என் வழியா நேர்மையற்றது? உங்கள் வழிகள் அன்றோ நேர்மையற்றவை!

நேரியவர் தம் நேரிய நடத்தையினின்று விலகி, தவறிழைத்தால், அவர்கள் தாம் இழைத்த தவற்றின் பொருட்டுச் சாவர். பொல்லார் தாம் செய்த பொல்லாப்பினின்று விலகி, நீதியையும் நேர்மையையும் கடைப்பிடித்தால் தம் உயிரை அவர்கள் காத்துக்கொள்வர். அவர்கள் உண்மையைக் கண்டுணர்ந்து, தாம் செய்த குற்றங்கள் அனைத்தினின்றும் விலகிவிட்டால், அவர்கள் வாழ்வது உறுதி; அவர்கள் சாகமாட்டார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 5:20-26 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

  ‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.’

A reading from the book of Ezekiel 18:21-28

Thus says the Lord:

  ‘If the wicked man renounces all the sins he has committed, respects my laws and is law-abiding and honest, he will certainly live; he will not die. All the sins he committed will be forgotten from then on; he shall live because of the integrity he has practised. What! Am I likely to take pleasure in the death of a wicked man – it is the Lord who speaks – and not prefer to see him renounce his wickedness and live?

  ‘But if the upright man renounces his integrity, commits sin, copies the wicked man and practises every kind of filth, is he to live? All the integrity he has practised shall be forgotten from then on; but this is because he himself has broken faith and committed sin, and for this he shall die. But you object, “What the Lord does is unjust.” Listen, you House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is it not what you do that is unjust? When the upright man renounces his integrity to commit sin and dies because of this, he dies because of the evil that he himself has committed. When the sinner renounces sin to become law-abiding and honest, he deserves to live. He has chosen to renounce all his previous sins; he shall certainly live; he shall not die.’

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. Watch over the flock, not simply as a duty but gladly

1 Peter 5:1-4

Now I have something to tell your elders: I am an elder myself, and a witness to the sufferings of Christ, and with you I have a share in the glory that is to be revealed. Be the shepherds of the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it, not simply as a duty but gladly, because God wants it; not for sordid money, but because you are eager to do it. Never be a dictator over any group that is put in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When the chief shepherd appears, you will be given the crown of unfading glory.
