Your brethren may be weaker than you: do not lead them astray.

A Reading from the First Letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 8:1-7,11-13 

Now about food sacrificed to idols. ‘We all have knowledge’; yes, that is so, but knowledge gives self-importance – it is love that makes the building grow. A man may imagine he understands something, but still not understand anything in the way that he ought to. But any man who loves God is known by him. Well then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: we know that idols do not really exist in the world and that there is no god but the One. And even if there were things called gods, either in the sky or on earth – where there certainly seem to be ‘gods’ and ‘lords’ in plenty – still for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things come and for whom we exist; and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things come and through whom we exist.

  Some people, however, do not have this knowledge. There are some who have been so long used to idols that they eat this food as though it really had been sacrificed to the idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled by it. In this way your knowledge could become the ruin of someone weak, of a brother for whom Christ died. By sinning in this way against your brothers, and injuring their weak consciences, it would be Christ against whom you sinned. That is why, since food can be the occasion of my brother’s downfall, I shall never eat meat again in case I am the cause of a brother’s downfall.

இயேசு தம் சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “நான் சொல்வதைக் கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் உங்களுக்குக் கூறுகிறேன்: உங்கள் பகைவரிடம் அன்பு கூருங்கள்; உங்களை வெறுப்போருக்கு நன்மை செய்யுங்கள். உங்களைச் சபிப்போருக்கு ஆசி கூறுங்கள்; உங்களை இகழ்ந்து பேசுவோருக்காக இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுங்கள்.

உங்களை ஒரு கன்னத்தில் அறைபவருக்கு மறு கன்னத்தையும் திருப்பிக் காட்டுங்கள். உங்கள் மேலுடையை எடுத்துக் கொள்பவர் உங்கள் அங்கியையும் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப் பார்த்தால் அவரைத் தடுக்காதீர்கள்.

உங்களிடம் கேட்கும் எவருக்கும் கொடுங்கள். உங்களுடைய பொருள்களை எடுத்துக்கொள்வோரிடமிருந்து அவற்றைத் திருப்பிக் கேட்காதீர்கள். பிறர் உங்களுக்கு என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று விரும்புகிறீர்களோ, அதையே நீங்களும் அவர்களுக்குச் செய்யுங்கள். உங்களிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துவோரிடமே நீங்கள் அன்பு செலுத்தினால் உங்களுக்கு வரும் நன்மை என்ன? பாவிகளும் தங்களிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துவோரிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துகிறார்களே. உங்களுக்கு நன்மை செய்பவர்களுக்கே நீங்கள் நன்மை செய்தால் உங்களுக்கு வரும் நன்மை என்ன? பாவிகளும் அவ்வாறு செய்கிறார்களே. திரும்பப் பெற்றுக் கொள்ளலாம் என எதிர்பார்த்து நீங்கள் கடன் கொடுத்தால் உங்களுக்கு வரும் நன்மை என்ன? ஏனெனில், முழுவதையும் திரும்பப் பெற்றுக் கொள்ளலாம் என்னும் நோக்குடன் பாவிகளும் பாவிகளுக்குக் கடன் கொடுக்கிறார்களே.

நீங்கள் உங்கள் பகைவரிடமும் அன்பு செலுத்துங்கள்; அவர்களுக்கு நன்மை செய்யுங்கள்; திரும்பக் கிடைக்கும் என எதிர்பார்க்காமல் கடன் கொடுங்கள். அப்போது உங்கள் கைம்மாறு மிகுதியாய் இருக்கும். நீங்கள் உன்னத கடவுளின் மக்களாய் இருப்பீர்கள். ஏனெனில் அவர் நன்றிகெட்டோருக்கும் பொல்லாதோருக்கும் நன்மை செய்கிறார்.

உங்கள் தந்தை இரக்கமுள்ளவராய் இருப்பதுபோல நீங்களும் இரக்கம் உள்ளவர்களாய் இருங்கள்.

பிறர் குற்றவாளிகள் எனத் தீர்ப்பு அளிக்காதீர்கள்; அப்போதுதான் நீங்களும் தீர்ப்புக்கு உள்ளாகமாட்டீர்கள். மற்றவர்களைக் கண்டனம் செய்யாதீர்கள்; அப்போதுதான் நீங்களும் கண்டனத்துக்கு ஆளாக மாட்டீர்கள். மன்னியுங்கள்; மன்னிப்புப் பெறுவீர்கள். கொடுங்கள்; உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கப்படும்; அமுக்கிக் குலுக்கிச் சரிந்து விழும்படி நன்றாய் அளந்து உங்கள் மடியில் போடுவார்கள். நீங்கள் எந்த அளவையால் அளக்கிறீர்களோ அதே அளவையால் உங்களுக்கும் அளக்கப்படும்.”

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய முதல் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 8: 1b-7, 11-13

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நம் அனைவருக்கும் அறிவு உண்டு. இது நமக்குத் தெரிந்ததே. இவ்வறிவு இறுமாப்படையச் செய்யும்; ஆனால் அன்பு உறவை வளர்க்கும். தமக்கு ஏதோ அறிவு இருக்கிறது என்று நினைக்கிறவர் அறியவேண்டிய முறையில் எதையும் அறிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. கடவுளிடம் அன்பு செலுத்துகிறவரைக் கடவுள் அறிவார். இப்போது சிலைகளுக்குப் படைக்கப்பட்டவற்றை உண்பதைக் குறித்துப் பார்ப்போம்:

‘இவ்வுலகில் சிலை என்பது ஒன்றுமேயில்லை', ‘கடவுள் ஒருவரன்றி வேறு தெய்வங்கள் இல்லை’ என்று நமக்குத் தெரியும். விண்ணிலும் மண்ணிலும் தெய்வங்கள் என்று சொல்லப்படுபவை பல இருக்கலாம்; தெய்வங்கள் பலவும் ஆண்டவர்கள் பலரும் உளர். ஆனால் நமக்குக் கடவுள் ஒருவரே; அவரே நம் தந்தை. அவரிடமிருந்தே அனைத்தும் வருகின்றன; அவருக்காக நாம் இருக்கின்றோம். அவ்வாறே, நமக்கு ஆண்டவரும் ஒருவரே; அவரே இயேசு கிறிஸ்து. அவர் வழியாகவே அனைத்தும் வருகின்றன; அவர் மூலமாகவே நாம் வாழ்கிறோம். ஆனால் இவ்வறிவு எல்லாரிடமும் இல்லை. இதுவரை சிலைகளை வழிபட்டுப் பழக்கப்பட்ட சிலர் அவற்றிற்குப் படைக்கப்பட்டவற்றைப் படையல் பொருள் என எண்ணி உண்கிறார்கள்.

அவர்களின் மனச்சான்று வலுவற்றதாய் இருப்பதால் அது கறைபடுகிறது. இவ்வாறு இந்த ‘அறிவு’ வலுவற்றவரின் அழிவுக்குக் காரணமாகிறது. அவர் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளுள் ஒருவர் அல்லவா? அவருக்காகவும் கிறிஸ்து இறந்தார் அல்லவா? இவ்வாறு நீங்கள் வலுவற்ற மனச்சான்றைக் காயப்படுத்திச் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளுக்கு எதிராகப் பாவம் செய்தால், அது கிறிஸ்துவுக்கே எதிரான பாவம் ஆகும். ஆகையால் என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளுள் ஒருவருக்கு நான் உண்ணும் உணவு ஒரு தடைக் கல்லாக இருக்குமானால், இறைச்சியை ஒரு நாளும் உண்ண மாட்டேன். அவர் பாவத்தில் விழ நான் காரணமாய் இருக்க மாட்டேன்.

Happy are you who are poor, who are hungry, who weep

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 6:20-26 

Fixing his eyes on his disciples Jesus said:

‘How happy are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God.

Happy you who are hungry now: you shall be satisfied.

Happy you who weep now: you shall laugh.

Happy are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, for then your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets.

‘But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now.

Alas for you who have your fill now: you shall go hungry.

Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep.

‘Alas for you when the world speaks well of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets.’

The world as we know it is passing away

A Reading from the First Letter of St.Paul to the  Corinthians 7:25-31. 

About remaining celibate, I have no directions from the Lord but give my own opinion as one who, by the Lord’s mercy, has stayed faithful. Well then, I believe that in these present times of stress this is right: that it is good for a man to stay as he is. If you are tied to a wife, do not look for freedom; if you are free of a wife, then do not look for one. But if you marry, it is no sin, and it is not a sin for a young girl to get married. They will have their troubles, though, in their married life, and I should like to spare you that.

  Brothers, this is what I mean: our time is growing short. Those who have wives should live as though they had none, and those who mourn should live as though they had nothing to mourn for; those who are enjoying life should live as though there were nothing to laugh about; those whose life is buying things should live as though they had nothing of their own; and those who have to deal with the world should not become engrossed in it. I say this because the world as we know it is passing away.

மானிடமகன் பொருட்டு மக்கள் உங்களை வெறுத்து, ஒதுக்கிவைத்து, நீங்கள் பொல்லாதவர் என்று இகழ்ந்து தள்ளிவிடும்போது நீங்கள் பேறுபெற்றோர். அந்நாளில் துள்ளி மகிழ்ந்து கொண்டாடுங்கள்; ஏனெனில் விண்ணுலகில் உங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கும் கைம்மாறு மிகுதியாகும். அவர்களுடைய மூதாதையரும் இறைவாக்கினருக்கு இவ்வாறே செய்து வந்தனர்.

ஆனால் செல்வர்களே ஐயோ! உங்களுக்குக் கேடு! ஏனெனில் நீங்கள் எல்லாம் அனுபவித்துவிட்டீர்கள். இப்போது உண்டு கொழுத்திருப்போரே, ஐயோ! உங்களுக்குக் கேடு! ஏனெனில் பட்டினி கிடப்பீர்கள். இப்போது சிரித்து இன்புறுவோரே, ஐயோ! உங்களுக்குக் கேடு! ஏனெனில் துயருற்று அழுவீர்கள். மக்கள் எல்லாரும் உங்களைப் புகழ்ந்து பேசும்போது ஐயோ! உங்களுக்குக் கேடு! ஏனெனில் அவர்களின் மூதாதையரும் போலி இறைவாக்கினருக்கு இவ்வாறே செய்தார்கள்.”
