Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 16, 13-23, 

At that time, Jesus, who arrived in the region of Caesarea-Philippi, asked his disciples: "According to the people, who is the Son of man? "They answered:" For some, John the Baptist; for others, Elijah; for still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. "Jesus asked them:" And you, what are you saying? Who am I for you? Then Simon Peter spoke up and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!" From that moment on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he had to go to Jerusalem, suffer much at the hands of the elders, high priests and scribes, be killed, and on the third day be resurrected. Peter, taking him aside, began to reproach him sharply: “God forbid, Lord! that won't happen to you. But he, turning around, said to Peter: "Go behind me, Satan!" You are an occasion for me to fall: your thoughts are not those of God, but those of men. "

Reading from the Book of Numbers (20, 1-13) 

In those days, the first month of the year, the whole community of the sons of Israel arrived in the desert of Cine. The people settled in Cadès. It was there that Miriam died and was buried. As there was no water for the community, they gathered against Moses and Aaron. The people quarreled with Moses, saying: “Ah! if only we had expired, when our brethren expired before the Lord! Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this desert where we are going to die, us and our animals? Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, and bring us to this place of calamity where nothing can be sown, where there are no fig trees, vineyards, pomegranates, and not even water to drink? ! Moses and Aaron left the assembly and went to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. They fell face down on the ground, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord spoke to Moses. He said, “Take your chief's staff and, with your brother Aaron, gather the community. Then, before their eyes, you will speak to the rock, and it will give its water. For them you will make water gush out of the rock, and you will make the community and its animals drink. As he had been ordered, Moses took the staff that was placed before the Lord. Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Hear now, rebels. Can we get some water out of this rock for you? Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff: water gushed out in abundance, and the community could drink and water their animals. The Lord then said to Moses and to his brother Aaron: “Since you have not had enough faith to manifest my holiness before the children of Israel, you will not bring this assembly into the land that I am giving them. These are the waters of Meribah (that is, the waters of Challenge) where the sons of Israel challenged the Lord, and where the Lord manifested among them his holiness.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தீர், சீதோன் ஆகிய பகுதிகளை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். அவற்றின் எல்லைப் பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்துவந்த கானானியப் பெண் ஒருவர் அவரிடம் வந்து, “ஐயா, தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்; என் மகள் பேய் பிடித்துக் கொடுமைக்குள்ளாகி இருக்கிறாள்” எனக் கதறினார். ஆனால் இயேசு அவரிடம் ஒரு வார்த்தைகூட மறுமொழியாகச் சொல்லவில்லை.

சீடர்கள் அவரை அணுகி, “நமக்குப் பின்னால் கத்திக்கொண்டு வருகிறாரே, இவரை அனுப்பிவிடும்” என வேண்டினர். அவரோ மறுமொழியாக, “இஸ்ரயேல் குலத்தாருள் காணாமற்போன ஆடுகளாய் இருப்போரிடமே நான் அனுப்பப்பட்டேன்” என்றார்.

ஆனால் அப்பெண் அவர்முன் வந்து பணிந்து, “ஐயா, எனக்கு உதவியருளும்” என்றார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “பிள்ளைகளுக்குரிய உணவை எடுத்து நாய்க்குட்டிகளுக்குப் போடுவது முறையல்ல” என்றார். உடனே அப்பெண், “ஆம் ஐயா, ஆனாலும் தங்கள் உரிமையாளரின் மேசையிலிருந்து விழும் சிறு துண்டுகளை நாய்க்குட்டிகள் தின்னுமே” என்றார்.

இயேசு மறுமொழியாக, “அம்மா, உமது நம்பிக்கை பெரிது. நீர் விரும்பியவாறே உமக்கு நிகழட்டும்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார். அந்நேரம் அவர் மகளின் பிணி நீங்கியது.

காலேபு மோசே முன் மக்களை உடனே அமைதிப்படுத்தி, “நாம் உடனடியாகப் போய் நாட்டைப் பிடித்துக்கொள்வோம்; ஏனெனில் நாம் அதை எளிதில் வென்றுவிட முடியும்” என்றார். ஆனால் அவருடன் சென்றிருந்த ஆள்கள், “நாம் அம்மக்களுக்கு எதிராகப் போக முடியாது; ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் நம்மிலும் வலிமை மிக்கவர்கள்” என்றனர்.

இவ்வாறு அவர்கள் உளவு பார்த்து வந்த நாட்டைப் பற்றித் தவறான தகவலை இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுக்குக் கொண்டு வந்தனர்; அவர்கள் கூறியது: உளவு பார்க்கும்படி நாங்கள் சென்றிருந்த நாடு தன் குடிமக்களையே விழுங்குவதாய் இருக்கிறது; அதில் நாங்கள் கண்ட மனிதர் அனைவரும் மிகவும் நெடிய உருவத்தினர்; அத்துடன் நெப்பிலிமில் இருந்து வருகிற ஆனாக்கின் புதல்வராகிய அரக்கரையும் கண்டோம்; எங்கள் பார்வையில் நாங்கள் வெட்டுக்கிளிகள் போன்றிருந்தோம்; அவர்களுக்கும் நாங்கள் அவ்வாறே காணப்பட்டோம்.

உடனே மக்கள் கூட்டமைப்பு முழுவதும் உரத்தக் குரலில் புலம்பிற்று; மக்கள் அன்றிரவு அழுதுகொண்டே இருந்தனர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 15:21-28 

Jesus left Gennesaret and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, ‘Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.’ But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him. ‘Give her what she wants,’ they said ‘because she is shouting after us.’ He said in reply, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.’ But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. ‘Lord,’ she said ‘help me.’ He replied, ‘It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ She retorted, ‘Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.’ Then Jesus answered her, ‘Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.’ And from that moment her daughter was well again.

A Reading from the Book of  Numbers 13:1-2,25-14:1,26-29,34-35. 

The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Paran and said, ‘Send out men, one from each tribe, to make a reconnaissance of this land of Canaan which I am giving to the sons of Israel. Send the leader of each tribe.’

  At the end of forty days, they came back from their reconnaissance of the land. They sought out Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They made their report to them, and to the whole community, and showed them the produce of the country.

  They told them this story, ‘We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey; this is its produce. At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, and we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekite holds the Negeb area, the Hittite, Amorite and Jebusite the highlands, and the Canaanite the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.’

  Caleb harangued the people gathered about Moses: ‘We must march in,’ he said ‘and conquer this land: we are well able to do it.’ But the men who had gone up with him answered, ‘We are not able to march against this people; they are stronger than we are.’ And they began to disparage the country they had reconnoitred to the sons of Israel, ‘The country we went to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Every man we saw there was of enormous size. Yes, and we saw giants there (the sons of Anak, descendants of the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.’

  At this, the whole community raised their voices and cried aloud, and the people wailed all that night.

  The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said:

  ‘I have heard the complaints which the sons of Israel make against me. Say to them, “As I live – it is the Lord who speaks – I will deal with you according to the very words you have used in my hearing. In this wilderness your dead bodies will fall, all you men of the census, all you who were numbered from the age of twenty years and over, you who have complained against me. For forty days you reconnoitred the land. Each day shall count for a year: for forty years you shall bear the burden of your sins, and you shall learn what it means to reject me.” I, the Lord, have spoken: this is how I will deal with this perverse community that has conspired against me. Here in this wilderness, to the last man, they shall die.’

இயேசு கூட்டத்தினரை அவ்விடத்திலிருந்து அனுப்பிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்பொழுது சீடரையும் உடனே படகேறித் தமக்கு முன் அக்கரைக்குச் செல்லுமாறு அவர் கட்டாயப்படுத்தினார். மக்களை அனுப்பிவிட்டு, அவர் தனியே இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுவதற்காக ஒரு மலையின் மேல் ஏறினார். பொழுது சாய்ந்த பிறகும் அங்கே அவர் தனியே இருந்தார். அதற்குள் படகு கரையிலிருந்து நெடுந்தொலை சென்றுவிட்டது. மேலும் எதிர்க்காற்று அடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததால் அலைகளால் படகு அலைக்கழிக்கப்பட்டது.

இரவின் நான்காம் காவல் வேளையில் இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கிக் கடல்மீது நடந்து வந்தார். அவர் கடல்மீது நடப்பதைக் கண்ட சீடர் கலங்கி, “ஐயோ, பேய்” என அச்சத்தினால் அலறினர். உடனே இயேசு அவர்களிடம் பேசினார். “துணிவோடிருங்கள்; நான்தான், அஞ்சாதீர்கள்” என்றார்.

பேதுரு அவருக்கு மறுமொழியாக, “ஆண்டவரே, நீர்தாம் என்றால் நானும் கடல்மீது நடந்து உம்மிடம் வர ஆணையிடும்” என்றார். அவர், “வா” என்றார். பேதுருவும் படகிலிருந்து இறங்கி இயேசுவை நோக்கிக் கடல்மீது நடந்து சென்றார். அப்பொழுது பெருங்காற்று வீசியதைக் கண்டு அஞ்சி அவர் மூழ்கும்போது, “ஆண்டவரே, என்னைக் காப்பாற்றும்” என்று கத்தினார். இயேசு உடனே தம் கையை நீட்டி அவரைப் பிடித்து, “நம்பிக்கை குன்றியவனே, ஏன் ஐயம் கொண்டாய்?” என்றார்.

அவர்கள் படகில் ஏறியதும் காற்று அடங்கியது. படகில் இருந்தோர் இயேசுவைப் பணிந்து, “உண்மையாகவே நீர் இறைமகன்” என்றனர்.

அவர்கள் மறு கரைக்குச் சென்று கெனசரேத்துப் பகுதியை அடைந்தார்கள். இயேசுவை யாரென்று அறிந்துணர்ந்த அவ்விடத்து மக்கள் சுற்றுப்புறமெங்கும் ஆள் அனுப்பி எல்லா நோயாளர்களையும் அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். அவரது மேலுடையின் ஓரத்தையாவது அவர்கள் தொட அனுமதிக்குமாறு அவரை வேண்டினர்; தொட்டவர் யாவரும் நலமடைந்தனர்.

இரவின் நான்காம் காவல் வேளையில் இயேசு அவர்களை நோக்கிக் கடல்மீது நடந்து வந்தார். அவர் கடல்மீது நடப்பதைக் கண்ட சீடர் கலங்கி, “ஐயோ, பேய்” என அச்சத்தினால் அலறினர். உடனே இயேசு அவர்களிடம் பேசினார். “துணிவோடிருங்கள்; நான்தான், அஞ்சாதீர்கள்” என்றார்.

பேதுரு அவருக்கு மறுமொழியாக, “ஆண்டவரே, நீர்தாம் என்றால் நானும் கடல்மீது நடந்து உம்மிடம் வர ஆணையிடும்” என்றார். அவர், “வா” என்றார். பேதுருவும் படகிலிருந்து இறங்கி இயேசுவை நோக்கிக் கடல்மீது நடந்து சென்றார். அப்பொழுது பெருங்காற்று வீசியதைக் கண்டு அஞ்சி அவர் மூழ்கும்போது, “ஆண்டவரே, என்னைக் காப்பாற்றும்” என்று கத்தினார். இயேசு உடனே தம் கையை நீட்டி அவரைப் பிடித்து, “நம்பிக்கை குன்றியவனே, ஏன் ஐயம் கொண்டாய்?” என்றார்.

அவர்கள் படகில் ஏறியதும் காற்று அடங்கியது. படகில் இருந்தோர் இயேசுவைப் பணிந்து, “உண்மையாகவே நீர் இறைமகன்” என்றனர்.

அவர்கள் மறு கரைக்குச் சென்று கெனசரேத்துப் பகுதியை அடைந்தார்கள். இயேசுவை யாரென்று அறிந்துணர்ந்த அவ்விடத்து மக்கள் சுற்றுப்புறமெங்கும் ஆள் அனுப்பி எல்லா நோயாளர்களையும் அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். அவரது மேலுடையின் ஓரத்தையாவது அவர்கள் தொட அனுமதிக்குமாறு அவரை வேண்டினர்; தொட்டவர் யாவரும் நலமடைந்தனர்.
