FIRST READING 

"A star rises, issuing from Jacob" 

Reading the Book of Numbers 24, 2-7.15-17a 

In those days,

looking up, the pagan prophet Balaam

saw Israel encamped, ranged in tribes.

The spirit of God was upon him,

and he spoke these enigmatic words:

“Oracle of Balaam, son of Beor,

oracle of man with penetrating gaze,

oracle of one who hears the words of God.

He sees what the Mighty makes him see,

he falls into ecstasy, and his eyes open.

How beautiful are your tents, Jacob,

and your dwellings, Israel!

They stretch out like valleys,

like gardens by a river;

the Lord planted them like aloes,

like cedars by the water's edge!

A hero will come out of the descendants of Jacob,

he will rule over many peoples.

His reign will be greater than that of Gog,

his kingship will be exalted. " 

Balaam again uttered these enigmatic words:

“Oracle of Balaam, son of Beor,

oracle of man with penetrating gaze,

oracle of one who hears the words of God,

who possesses the knowledge of the Most High.

He sees what the Mighty makes him see,

he falls into ecstasy, and his eyes open.

This hero, I see him - but not for now -

I see him - but not up close:

A star rises, issuing from Jacob,

a scepter rises, issuing from Israel. "

for you are the God who saves me.

your love that is forever.

because of your goodness, Lord. 

He is righteous, he is good, the Lord,

he who shows sinners the way.

His righteousness directs the humble,

he teaches the humble his way.

அக்காலத்தில்

திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் போதித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, “நாங்கள் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கூட்டத்தினர் அவரிடம் கேட்டனர். அதற்கு அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “இரண்டு அங்கிகளை உடையவர் இல்லாதவரோடு பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளட்டும்; உணவை உடையவரும் அவ்வாறே செய்யட்டும்” என்றார்.

வரிதண்டுவோரும் திருமுழுக்குப் பெற வந்து, “போதகரே, நாங்கள் என்ன செய்யவேண்டும்?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டனர். அவர், “உங்களுக்குக் குறிக்கப்பட்ட தொகைக்கு அதிகமாக எதையும் தண்டாதீர்கள்” என்றார்.

படைவீரரும் அவரை நோக்கி, “நாங்கள் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டனர். அவர், “நீங்கள் எவரையும் அச்சுறுத்திப் பணம் பறிக்காதீர்கள்; யார்மீதும் பொய்க் குற்றம் சுமத்தாதீர்கள்; உங்கள் ஊதியமே போதும் என்றிருங்கள்” என்றார்.

அக்காலத்தில் மக்கள் மீட்பரை எதிர்பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஒருவேளை யோவான் மெசியாவாக இருப்பாரோ என்று எல்லாரும் தங்களுக்குள் எண்ணிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். யோவான் அவர்கள் அனைவரையும் பார்த்து, “நான் தண்ணீரால் உங்களுக்குத் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுக்கிறேன்; ஆனால் என்னைவிட வலிமைமிக்க ஒருவர் வருகிறார். அவருடைய மிதியடி வாரை அவிழ்க்கக்கூட எனக்குத் தகுதியில்லை. அவர் தூய ஆவி என்னும் நெருப்பால் உங்களுக்குத் திருமுழுக்குக் கொடுப்பார். அவர் சுளகைத் தம் கையில் கொண்டு கோதுமையையும் பதரையும் பிரித்தெடுப்பார். கோதுமையைத் தம் களஞ்சியத்தில் சேர்ப்பார்; பதரையோ அணையா நெருப்பிலிட்டுச் சுட்டெரிப்பார்” என்றார். மேலும் பல அறிவுரைகள் கூறி மக்களுக்கு நற்செய்தியை அறிவித்தார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

ஆண்டவரோடு இணைந்து என்றும் மகிழுங்கள்; மீண்டும் கூறுகிறேன், மகிழுங்கள். கனிந்த உங்கள் உள்ளம் எல்லா மனிதருக்கும் தெரிந்திருக்கட்டும். ஆண்டவர் அண்மையில் உள்ளார். எதைப்பற்றியும் கவலைப்பட வேண்டாம். ஆனால் நன்றியோடு கூடிய இறை வேண்டல், மன்றாட்டு ஆகிய அனைத்தின் வழியாகவும் கடவுளிடம் உங்கள் விண்ணப்பங்களைத் தெரிவியுங்கள். அப்பொழுது, அறிவெல்லாம் கடந்த இறை அமைதி கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவோடு இணைந்துள்ள உங்கள் உள்ளத்தையும் மனத்தையும் பாதுகாக்கும்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 3 : 10-18 

When all the people asked John, ‘What must we do?’ he answered, ‘If anyone has two tunics he must share with the man who has none, and the one with something to eat must do the same.’ There were tax collectors too who came for baptism, and these said to him, ‘Master, what must we do?’ He said to them, ‘Exact no more than your rate.’ Some soldiers asked him in their turn, ‘What about us? What must we do?’ He said to them, ‘No intimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!’

  A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, ‘I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fan is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn in a fire that will never go out.’ As well as this, there were many other things he said to exhort the people and to announce the Good News to them.

The Lord is very near.

Philippians 4: 4-7 

I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord; I repeat, what I want is your happiness. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone: the Lord is very near.

  There is no need to worry; but if there is anything you need, pray for it, asking God for it with prayer and thanksgiving, and that peace of God, which is so much greater than we can understand, will guard your hearts and your thoughts, in Christ Jesus.

Shout for joy, daughter of Zion,

Israel, shout aloud!

Rejoice, exult with all your heart,

daughter of Jerusalem!

The Lord has repealed your sentence;

he has driven your enemies away.

The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst;

you have no more evil to fear.

When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem:

Zion, have no fear,

do not let your hands fall limp.

The Lord your God is in your midst,

a victorious warrior.

He will exult with joy over you,

he will renew you by his love;
