The Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 12:39-48

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘You may be quite sure of this, that if the householder had known at what hour the burglar would come, he would not have let anyone break through the wall of his house. You too must stand ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.’

Peter said, ‘Lord, do you mean this parable for us, or for everyone?’ The Lord replied, ‘What sort of steward, then, is faithful and wise enough for the master to place him over his household to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? Happy that servant if his master’s arrival finds him at this employment. I tell you truly, he will place him over everything he owns. But as for the servant who says to himself, “My master is taking his time coming,” and sets about beating the menservants and the maids, and eating and drinking and getting drunk, his master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. The master will cut him off and send him to the same fate as the unfaithful.

The servant who knows what his master wants, but has not even started to carry out those wishes, will receive very many strokes of the lash. The one who did not know, but deserves to be beaten for what he has done, will receive fewer strokes. When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him; when a man has had a great deal given him on trust, even more will be expected of him.’

அக்காலத்தில்

சிலர் இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, பலி செலுத்திக்கொண்டிருந்த கலிலேயரைப் பிலாத்து கொன்றான் என்ற செய்தியை அறிவித்தனர். அவர் அவர்களிடம் மறுமொழியாக, “இக்கலிலேயருக்கு இவ்வாறு நிகழ்ந்ததால் இவர்கள் மற்றெல்லாக் கலிலேயரையும்விடப் பாவிகள் என நினைக்கிறீர்களா? அப்படி அல்ல என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். மனம் மாறாவிட்டால் நீங்கள் அனைவரும் அவ்வாறே அழிவீர்கள். சீலோவாமிலே கோபுரம் விழுந்து பதினெட்டுப் பேரைக் கொன்றதே. அவர்கள் எருசலேமில் குடியிருந்த மற்ற எல்லாரையும்விடக் குற்றவாளிகள் என நினைக்கிறீர்களா? அப்படி அல்ல என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன். மனம் மாறாவிட்டால் நீங்கள் அனைவரும் அப்படியே அழிவீர்கள்” என்றார்.

மேலும், இயேசு இந்த உவமையைக் கூறினார்: “ஒருவர் தம் திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தில் அத்திமரம் ஒன்றை நட்டு வைத்திருந்தார். அவர் வந்து அதில் கனியைத் தேடியபோது எதையும் காணவில்லை. எனவே அவர் தோட்டத் தொழிலாளரிடம், ‘பாரும், மூன்று ஆண்டுகளாக இந்த அத்திமரத்தில் கனியைத் தேடி வருகிறேன்; எதையும் காணவில்லை. ஆகவே இதை வெட்டிவிடும். இடத்தை ஏன் அடைத்துக்கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும்?’ என்றார். தொழிலாளர் மறுமொழியாக, ‘ஐயா, இந்த ஆண்டும் இதை விட்டு வையும்; நான் இதைச் சுற்றிலும் கொத்தி எரு போடுவேன். அடுத்த ஆண்டு கனி கொடுத்தால் சரி; இல்லையானால் இதை வெட்டிவிடலாம்’ என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார்.”

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

மார்ச் 20 : இரண்டாம் வாசகம்

மோசேயோடு மக்கள் பாலைநிலத்தில் நடத்திய வாழ்க்கை நமக்கு அறிவுபுகட்டும் படிப்பினையாக எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய முதல் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 10: 1-6, 10-12

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நீங்கள் ஒன்றை அறிந்திருக்க வேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறேன். நம் முன்னோர் அனைவரும் மேகத்தின்கீழ் வழிநடந்தனர். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் கடலைக் கடந்து சென்றனர். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் மோசேயோடு இணைந்திருக்கும்படி மேகத்தாலும் கடலாலும் திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்றார்கள். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரே ஆன்மிக உணவை உண்ட னர். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒரே ஆன்மிகப் பானத்தைப் பருகினர். தங்களைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்த ஆன்மிகப் பாறையிலிருந்து அவர்கள் பருகினார்கள். கிறிஸ்துவே அப்பாறை. அப்படியிருந்தும், அவர்களில் பெரும்பான்மையோர் கடவுளுக்கு உகந்தவராய் இருக்கவில்லை. பாலை நிலத்திலேயே அவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டார்கள்.

அவர்கள் தீயனவற்றில் ஆசை கொண்டு இருந்தது போல நாமும் இராதவாறு இவை நமக்கு ஒரு முன்னடையாளமாக நிகழ்ந்தன. அவர்களுள் சிலர் முணு முணுத்தனர். இதனால் அவர்கள் அழிவு விளைவிக்கும் தூதரால் அழிக்கப்பட்டனர். அவர்களைப்போல் நாமும் முணுமுணுக்கக் கூடாது.

அவர்களுக்கு நிகழ்ந்த இவையனைத்தும் மற்றவர்களுக்கு எச்சரிக்கையாக அமைகின்றன. இறுதிக் காலத்தில் வாழும் நமக்கு இவை அறிவுரையாக எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளன. எனவே தாம் நிலையாக நிற்பதாக நினைத்துக் கொண்டிருப்பவர் விழுந்துவிடாதபடி பார்த்துக்கொள்ளட்டும்.

அந்நாள்களில்

மோசே மிதியானின் அர்ச்சகராகிய தம் மாமனார் இத்திரோவின் ஆட்டு மந்தையை மேய்த்து வந்தார். அவர் அந்த ஆட்டு மந்தையைப் பாலைநிலத்தின் மேற்றிசையாக ஓட்டிக்கொண்டு கடவுளின் மலையாகிய ஓரேபை வந்தடைந்தார். அப்போது ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் ஒரு முட்புதரின் நடுவே தீப்பிழம்பில் அவருக்குத் தோன்றினார். அவர் பார்த்தபோது முட்புதர் நெருப்பால் எரிந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. ஆனால் அம்முட்புதர் தீய்ந்துபோகவில்லை. “ஏன் முட்புதர் தீய்ந்துபோகவில்லை? இந்த மாபெரும் காட்சியைப் பார்ப்பதற்காக நான் அப்பக்கமாகச் செல்வேன்” என்று மோசே கூறிக்கொண்டார்.

அவ்வாறே பார்ப்பதற்காக அவர் அணுகி வருவதை ஆண்டவர் கண்டார். ‘மோசே, மோசே’ என்று சொல்லிக் கடவுள் முட்புதரின் நடுவிலிருந்து அவரை அழைக்க, அவர் “இதோ நான்” என்றார். அவர், “இங்கே அணுகி வராதே; உன் பாதங்களிலிருந்து மிதியடிகளை அகற்றிவிடு; ஏனெனில் நீ நின்றுகொண்டிருக்கிற இந்த இடம் புனிதமான நிலம்” என்றார். மேலும் அவர், “உங்கள் மூதாதையரின் கடவுள், ஆபிரகாமின் கடவுள், ஈசாக்கின் கடவுள், யாக்கோபின் கடவுள் நானே” என்றுரைத்தார். மோசே கடவுளை உற்று நோக்க அஞ்சியதால் தம் முகத்தை மூடிக்கொண்டார்.

அப்போது ஆண்டவர் கூறியது: எகிப்தில் என் மக்கள் படும் துன்பத்தை என் கண்களால் கண்டேன்; அடிமை வேலைவாங்கும் அதிகாரிகளை முன்னிட்டு அவர்கள் எழுப்பும் குரலையும் கேட்டேன்; ஆம், அவர்களின் துயரங்களை நான் அறிவேன். எனவே எகிப்தியரின் பிடியிலிருந்து அவர்களை விடுவிக்கவும், அந்நாட்டிலிருந்து பாலும் தேனும் பொழியும் நல்ல பரந்ததோர் நாட்டிற்கு அவர்களை நடத்திச் செல்லவும் இறங்கி வந்துள்ளேன்.

மோசே கடவுளிடம், “இதோ! இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடம் சென்று உங்கள் மூதாதையரின் கடவுள் என்னை உங்களிடம் அனுப்பியுள்ளார் என்று நான் சொல்ல, ‘அவர் பெயர் என்ன?’ என்று அவர்கள் என்னை வினவினால், அவர்களுக்கு என்ன சொல்வேன்?” என்று கேட்டார். கடவுள் மோசேயை நோக்கி, ‘இருக்கின்றவராக இருக்கின்றவர் நானே’ என்றார்.

மேலும் அவர், “நீ இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடம், ‘இருக்கின்றவர் நானே’ என்பவர் என்னை உங்களிடம் அனுப்பினார் என்று சொல்” என்றார். கடவுள் மீண்டும் மோசேயை நோக்கிப் பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்: “நீ இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடம், ‘உங்கள் மூதாதையரின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் - ஆபிரகாமின் கடவுள், ஈசாக்கின் கடவுள், யாக்கோபின் கடவுள் - என்னை உங்களிடம் அனுப்பியுள்ளார்’ என்று சொல். இதுவே என்றென்றும் என் பெயர்; தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக என் நினைவுச் சின்னமும் இதுவே!”

'Leave the fig tree one more year'

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 13:1-9

Some people arrived and told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them, ‘Do you suppose these Galileans who suffered like that were greater sinners than any other Galileans? They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fell and killed them? Do you suppose that they were more guilty than all the other people living in Jerusalem? They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did.’

He told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it but found none. He said to the man who looked after the vineyard, “Look here, for three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and finding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?” “Sir,” the man replied “leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it: it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down.”’

The life of the people under Moses in the desert was written down to be a lesson for us

A Reading from the first letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 10:1-6,10-12

I want to remind you, brothers, how our fathers were all guided by a cloud above them and how they all passed through the sea. They were all baptised into Moses in this cloud and in this sea; all ate the same spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink, since they all drank from the spiritual rock that followed them as they went, and that rock was Christ. In spite of this, most of them failed to please God and their corpses littered the desert.

These things all happened as warnings for us, not to have the wicked lusts for forbidden things that they had. You must never complain: some of them did, and they were killed by the Destroyer.

All this happened to them as a warning, and it was written down to be a lesson for us who are living at the end of the age. The man who thinks he is safe must be careful that he does not fall.
