The Lamb will be their shepherd and will lead them to springs of living water

Apocalypse 7: 9,14-17 

I, John, saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe and language; they were standing in front of the throne and in front of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palms in their hands. One of the elders said, ‘These are the people who have been through the great persecution, and because they have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb, they now stand in front of God’s throne and serve him day and night in his sanctuary; and the One who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. They will never hunger or thirst again; neither the sun nor scorching wind will ever plague them, because the Lamb who is at the throne will be their shepherd and will lead them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away all tears from their eyes.’

'We must turn to the pagans'

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 13: 14, 43-52 

Paul and Barnabas carried on from Perga till they reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to synagogue on the Sabbath and took their seats.

  When the meeting broke up many Jews and devout converts joined Paul and Barnabas, and in their talks with them Paul and Barnabas urged them to remain faithful to the grace God had given them.

  The next sabbath almost the whole town assembled to hear the word of God. When they saw the crowds, the Jews, prompted by jealousy, used blasphemies and contradicted everything Paul said. Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly. ‘We had to proclaim the word of God to you first, but since you have rejected it, since you do not think yourselves worthy of eternal life, we must turn to the pagans. For this is what the Lord commanded us to do when he said:

I have made you a light for the nations,

so that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth.’

It made the pagans very happy to hear this and they thanked the Lord for his message; all who were destined for eternal life became believers. Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.

  But the Jews worked upon some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of the city and persuaded them to turn against Paul and Barnabas and expel them from their territory. So they shook the dust from their feet in defiance and went off to Iconium; but the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு நிலைவாழ்வு அளிக்கும் உணவு பற்றி கற்பித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த பொழுது, சீடர் பலர் இதைக் கேட்டு, “இதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்வது மிகக் கடினம்; இப்பேச்சை இன்னும் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்க முடியுமா?” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர். இதுபற்றித் தம் சீடர் முணுமுணுப்பதை இயேசு உணர்ந்து அவர்களிடம், “நீங்கள் நம்புவதற்கு இது தடையாய் இருக்கிறதா? அப்படியானால் மானிடமகன் தாம் முன்பு இருந்த இடத்திற்கு ஏறிச் செல்வதை நீங்கள் கண்டால் அது உங்களுக்கு எப்படி இருக்கும்? வாழ்வு தருவது தூய ஆவியே; ஊனியல்பு ஒன்றுக்கும் உதவாது. நான் கூறிய வார்த்தைகள் வாழ்வு தரும் ஆவியைக் கொடுக்கின்றன. அப்படியிருந்தும் உங்களுள் சிலர் என்னை நம்பவில்லை” என்றார்.

நம்பாதோர் யார் யார் என்பதும், தம்மைக் காட்டிக்கொடுக்க இருப்பவன் யார் என்பதும் இயேசுவுக்குத் தொடக்கத்திலிருந்தே தெரிந்திருந்தது. மேலும் அவர், “இதன் காரணமாகத்தான் ‘என் தந்தை அருள்கூர்ந்தால் அன்றி யாரும் என்னிடம் வர இயலாது’ என்று உங்களுக்குக் கூறினேன்” என்றார்.

அன்றே இயேசுவின் சீடருள் பலர் அவரைவிட்டு விலகினர். அன்று முதல் அவர்கள் அவரோடு சேர்ந்து செல்லவில்லை. இயேசு பன்னிரு சீடரிடம், “நீங்களும் போய்விட நினைக்கிறீர்களா?” என்று கேட்டார். சீமோன் பேதுரு மறுமொழியாக, “ஆண்டவரே நாங்கள் யாரிடம் போவோம்? நிலைவாழ்வு அளிக்கும் வார்த்தைகள் உம்மிடம்தானே உள்ளன. நீரே கடவுளுக்கு அர்ப்பணமானவர் என்பதை நாங்கள் அறிந்துகொண்டோம். அதை நம்புகிறோம்” என்றார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

யூதேயா, கலிலேயா, சமாரியா ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் எல்லாம் திருச்சபை வளர்ச்சியுற்று, ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடந்து, அமைதியில் திளைத்து, தூய ஆவியாரின் துணையால் பெருகிவந்தது.

பேதுரு எல்லா இடங்களுக்கும் சென்று வந்தார்; ஒரு நாள் லித்தாவில் வாழ்ந்த இறைமக்களிடம் வந்து சேர்ந்தார். அங்கே அவர் எட்டு ஆண்டுகள் முடக்குவாதத்தால் படுக்கையில் கிடந்த ஐனேயா என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒருவரைக் கண்டார்; அவரிடம், “ஐனேயா, இயேசு கிறிஸ்து உம் பிணியைப் போக்குகிறார்; எழுந்து உம் படுக்கையை நீரே சரிப்படுத்தும்” என்று பேதுரு கூறினார். உடனே அவர் எழுந்தார். லித்தாவிலும் சாரோனிலும் வாழ்ந்து வந்தவர்கள் அனைவரும் அதைக் கண்டு ஆண்டவரிடம் திரும்பினார்கள்.

யோப்பா நகரில் தபித்தா என்னும் பெயருடைய பெண் சீடர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் தொற்கா என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டார்; நன்மை செய்வதிலும் இரக்கச் செயல்கள் புரிவதிலும் அவர் முற்றிலும் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார். உடல்நலம் குன்றி ஒரு நாள் அவர் இறந்துவிட்டார். அங்கிருந்தோர் அவரது உடலைக் குளிப்பாட்டி மேல்மாடியில் கிடத்தியிருந்தனர். யோப்பாவிற்கு அருகிலுள்ள லித்தாவுக்குப் பேதுரு வந்திருப்பதைச் சீடர்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டு இருவரை அவரிடம் அனுப்பி, “எங்களிடம் உடனே வாருங்கள்” என்று கெஞ்சிக் கேட்டார்கள்.

பேதுரு புறப்பட்டு அவர்களோடு வந்தார். வந்ததும் அவர்கள் அவரை மேல்மாடிக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார்கள். கைம்பெண்கள் அவரருகில் வந்து நின்று, தொற்கா தங்களோடு இருந்தபோது செய்துகொடுத்த எல்லா அங்கிகளையும் ஆடைகளையும் காண்பித்தவாறே அழுதார்கள். பேதுரு அனைவரையும் வெளியே அனுப்பிவிட்டு, முழந்தாள்படியிட்டு இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார்; அவரது உடலின் பக்கமாகத் திரும்பி, “தபித்தா, எழுந்திடு” என்றார். உடனே அவர் கண்களைத் திறந்து பேதுருவைக் கண்டு, எழுந்து உட்கார்ந்தார். பேதுரு அவருடைய கையைப் பிடித்து எழுந்து நிற்கச் செய்தார். இறைமக்களையும் கைம்பெண்களையும் கூப்பிட்டு, அவர்கள்முன் அவரை உயிருடன் நிறுத்தினார்.

இது யோப்பா நகர் முழுவதும் தெரிய வரவே, ஆண்டவர்மீது பலர் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டனர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John 6: 60-69 

After hearing his doctrine many of the followers of Jesus said, ‘This is intolerable language. How could anyone accept it?’ Jesus was aware that his followers were complaining about it and said, ‘Does this upset you? What if you should see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before?

‘It is the spirit that gives life,

the flesh has nothing to offer.

The words I have spoken to you are spirit

and they are life.

‘But there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the outset those who did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. He went on, ‘This is why I told you that no one could come to me unless the Father allows him.’ After this, many of his disciples left him and stopped going with him.

  Then Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘What about you, do you want to go away too?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the Holy One of God.’

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 9: 31-42 

The churches throughout Judaea, Galilee and Samaria were now left in peace, building themselves up, living in the fear of the Lord, and filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.

  Peter visited one place after another and eventually came to the saints living down in Lydda. There he found a man called Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for eight years. Peter said to him, ‘Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you: get up and fold up your sleeping mat.’ Aeneas got up immediately; everybody who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they were all converted to the Lord.

  At Jaffa there was a woman disciple called Tabitha, or Dorcas in Greek, who never tired of doing good or giving in charity. But the time came when she got ill and died, and they washed her and laid her out in a room upstairs. Lydda is not far from Jaffa, so when the disciples heard that Peter was there, they sent two men with an urgent message for him, ‘Come and visit us as soon as possible.’

  Peter went back with them straightaway, and on his arrival they took him to the upstairs room, where all the widows stood round him in tears, showing him tunics and other clothes Dorcas had made when she was with them. Peter sent them all out of the room and knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to the dead woman and said, ‘Tabitha, stand up.’ She opened her eyes, looked at Peter and sat up. Peter helped her to her feet, then he called in the saints and widows and showed them she was alive. The whole of Jaffa heard about it and many believed in the Lord.

“நாம் உண்பதற்கு இவர் தமது சதையை எப்படிக் கொடுக்க இயலும்?” என்ற வாக்குவாதம் யூதர்களிடையே எழுந்தது.

இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: மானிட மகனுடைய சதையை உண்டு அவருடைய இரத்தத்தைக் குடித்தாலொழிய நீங்கள் வாழ்வு அடையமாட்டீர்கள். எனது சதையை உண்டு என் இரத்தத்தைக் குடிப்பவர் நிலைவாழ்வைக் கொண்டுள்ளார். நானும் அவரை இறுதி நாளில் உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்வேன். எனது சதை உண்மையான உணவு. எனது இரத்தம் உண்மையான பானம். எனது சதையை உண்டு எனது இரத்தத்தைக் குடிப்போர் என்னோடு இணைந்திருப்பர், நானும் அவர்களோடு இணைந்திருப்பேன். வாழும் தந்தை என்னை அனுப்பினார். நானும் அவரால் வாழ்கிறேன். அதுபோல் என்னை உண்போரும் என்னால் வாழ்வர். விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து இறங்கி வந்த உணவு இதுவே; இது நம் முன்னோர் உண்ட உணவு போன்றது அல்ல. அதை உண்டவர்கள் இறந்து போனார்கள். இவ்வுணவை உண்போர் என்றும் வாழ்வர்.” இயேசு கப்பர்நாகுமில் உள்ள தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் இவ்வாறு கற்பித்தார்.
