Because of your crimes I will crush you into the ground

A Reading from the Book of Amos 2: 6-10,13-16

The Lord says this:

For the three crimes, the four crimes, of Israel

I have made my decree and will not relent:

because they have sold the virtuous man for silver

and the poor man for a pair of sandals,

because they trample on the heads of ordinary people

and push the poor out of their path,

because father and son have both resorted to the same girl,

profaning my holy name,

because they stretch themselves out by the side of every altar

on clothes acquired as pledges,

and drink the wine of the people they have fined

in the house of their god...

Yet it was I who overthrew the Amorites when they attacked,

men tall as cedars and strong as oaks,

I who destroyed them,

both fruit above ground

and root below.

It was I who brought you out of the land of Egypt

and for forty years led you through the wilderness

to take possession of the Amorite’s country.

See then how I am going to crush you into the ground

as the threshing-sledge crushes when clogged by straw;

flight will not save even the swift,

the strong man will find his strength useless,

the mighty man will be powerless to save himself.

The bowman will not stand his ground,

the fast runner will not escape,

the horseman will not save himself,

the bravest warriors will run away naked that day.

It is the Lord who speaks.

நீர் எங்கே சென்றாலும், நானும் உம்மைப் பின்பற்றுவேன்.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு விண்ணேற்றம் அடையும் நாள் நெருங்கி வரவே, எருசலேமை நோக்கிச் செல்லத் தீர்மானித்து, தமக்கு முன் தூதர்களை அனுப்பினார். அவருக்கு இடம் ஏற்பாடு செய்வதற்காக அவர்கள் சமாரியருடைய ஓர் ஊருக்குப் போய்ச் சேர்ந்தார்கள். அவர் எருசலேம் செல்லும் நோக்கமாயிருந்ததால் அவர்கள் அவரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை.

அவருடைய சீடர்கள் யாக்கோபும் யோவானும் இதைக் கண்டு, “ஆண்டவரே, வானத்திலிருந்து தீ வந்து இவர்களை அழிக்குமாறு செய்யவா? இது உமக்கு விருப்பமா?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவர் அவர்கள் பக்கம் திரும்பி, அவர்களைக் கடிந்துகொண்டார். பின்பு அவர்கள் வேறோர் ஊருக்குச் சென்றார்கள்.

அவர்கள் வழி நடந்தபோது ஒருவர் அவரை நோக்கி, “நீர் எங்கே சென்றாலும் நானும் உம்மைப் பின்பற்றுவேன்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நரிகளுக்குப் பதுங்குக் குழிகளும், வானத்துப் பறவைகளுக்குக் கூடுகளும் உண்டு, மானிட மகனுக்கோ தலை சாய்க்கக்கூட இடமில்லை” என்றார்.

இயேசு மற்றொருவரை நோக்கி, “என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வாரும்” என்றார். அவர், “முதலில் நான் போய் என் தந்தையை அடக்கம் செய்துவிட்டுவர அனுமதியும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரைப் பார்த்து, “இறந்தோரைப் பற்றிக் கவலை வேண்டாம். அவர்கள் அடக்கம் செய்யப்படுவார்கள். நீர் போய் இறையாட்சியைப் பற்றி அறிவியும்” என்றார்.

வேறொருவரும், “ஐயா, உம்மைப் பின்பற்றுவேன்; ஆயினும் முதலில் நான் போய் என் வீட்டில் உள்ளவர்களிடம் விடைபெற்று வர அனுமதியும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரை நோக்கி, “கலப்பையில் கை வைத்தபின் திரும்பிப் பார்ப்பவர் எவரும் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படத் தகுதியுள்ளவர் அல்ல” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

உரிமை வாழ்வுக்கு அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கலாத்தியருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 5: 1, 13-18

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கிறிஸ்து அடிமை நிலையிலிருந்து நம்மை விடுவித்து நமக்கு உரிமை வாழ்வை அளித்துள்ளார்; அதில் நிலைத்திருங்கள். மீண்டும் அடிமைத்தளை எனும் நுகத்தை உங்கள்மேல் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாதீர்கள்.

அன்பர்களே, நீங்கள் உரிமை வாழ்வுக்கு அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்; அந்த உரிமை வாழ்வு ஊனியல்பின் செயல்களுக்கு வாய்ப்பாய் இராதபடி பார்த்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் அன்பின் அடிமைகளாய் இருங்கள். “உன்மீது நீ அன்புகூர்வதுபோல உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர்மீதும் அன்புகூர்வாயாக” என்னும் இந்த ஒரே கட்டளையில் திருச்சட்டம் முழுவதும் நிறைவு பெறுகிறது. ஆனால் நீங்கள் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் கடித்து விழுங்குவதை நிறுத்தாவிட்டால் ஒருவரால் ஒருவர் அழிக்கப்படுவீர்கள். எச்சரிக்கை!

எனவே நான் சொல்கிறேன்: தூய ஆவியின் தூண்டுதலுக்கேற்ப வாழுங்கள்; அப்போது ஊனியல்பின் இச்சைகளை நிறைவேற்ற மாட்டீர்கள். ஊனியல்பின் இச்சை தூய ஆவிக்கு முரணானது. தூய ஆவியின் விருப்பம் ஊனியல்புக்கு முரணானது. இவை ஒன்றுக்கொன்று எதிராய் உள்ளதால் நீங்கள் செய்ய விரும்புவதை உங்களால் செய்ய முடிவதில்லை. நீங்கள் தூய ஆவியால் வழிநடத்தப்பட்டால் திருச்சட்டத்திற்கு உட்பட்டவர்களாய் இருக்கமாட்டீர்கள்.

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவர் எலியாவை நோக்கி, “ஆபேல் மெகோலாவைச் சார்ந்த சாபாற்றின் மகன் எலிசாவை உனக்குப் பதிலாக இறைவாக்கினராக அருள்பொழிவு செய்” என்றார்.

எலியா அங்கிருந்து சென்று, சாபாற்றின் மகன் எலிசாவைக் கண்டார். அப்பொழுது அவர் ஏர் பூட்டி உழுதுகொண்டிருந்தார். அவருக்கு முன்னே பதினோர் ஏர்கள் இருந்தன. பன்னிரண்டாம் ஏரைத் தாமே ஓட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். எலியா அவரிடம் சென்று, தம் மேலாடையை அவர் மீது தூக்கிப் போட்டார். எலிசா அவரைக் கடந்து செல்கையில் ஏர் மாடுகளை விட்டுவிட்டு எலியாவிடம் ஓடிவந்து, “நான் என் தாய் தந்தையிடம் விடைபெற்று வர அனுமதி தாரும். அதன் பின் உம்மைப் பின்செல்வேன்” என்றார். அதற்கு அவர், “சென்று வா, உனக்கு நான் செய்ய வேண்டியதைச் செய்துவிட்டேன்!” என்றார்.

எலிசா எலியாவை விட்டுத் திரும்பி வந்து, ஏர் மாடுகளைப் பிடித்து, அடித்துத் தாம் உழுத கலப்பைக்கு நெருப்பு மூட்டி, அம்மாட்டு இறைச்சியைச் சமைத்து, மக்களுக்குப் பரிமாற, அவர்களும் அதை உண்டனர். பின்பு அவர் புறப்பட்டுப் போய் எலியாவைப் பின்பற்றி அவருக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்யலானார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 9: 51-62

As the time drew near for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely took the road for Jerusalem and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan village to make preparations for him, but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem. Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, ‘Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?’ But he turned and rebuked them, and they went off to another village.

As they travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’

Another to whom he said, ‘Follow me’, replied, ‘Let me go and bury my father first.’ But he answered, ‘Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.’

Another said, ‘I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’

When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free

Galatians 5:1,13-18

When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. My brothers, you were called, as you know, to liberty; but be careful, or this liberty will provide an opening for self-indulgence. Serve one another, rather, in works of love, since the whole of the Law is summarised in a single command: Love your neighbour as yourself. If you go snapping at each other and tearing each other to pieces, you had better watch or you will destroy the whole community.

Let me put it like this: if you are guided by the Spirit you will be in no danger of yielding to self-indulgence, since self-indulgence is the opposite of the Spirit, the Spirit is totally against such a thing, and it is precisely because the two are so opposed that you do not always carry out your good intentions. If you are led by the Spirit, no law can touch you.
