Do not invite those who might be able to invite you back

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 14: 12-14 

Jesus said to his host, one of the leading Pharisees, ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, brothers, relations or rich neighbours, for fear they repay your courtesy by inviting you in return. No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; that they cannot pay you back means that you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again.’

Be united in your love

Philippians 2:1-4 

If our life in Christ means anything to you, if love can persuade at all, or the Spirit that we have in common, or any tenderness and sympathy, then be united in your convictions and united in your love, with a common purpose and a common mind. That is the one thing which would make me completely happy. There must be no competition among you, no conceit; but everybody is to be self-effacing. Always consider the other person to be better than yourself, so that nobody thinks of his own interests first but everybody thinks of other people’s interests instead.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எரிகோவுக்குச் சென்று அந்நகர் வழியே போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தார். அங்கு சக்கேயு என்னும் பெயருடைய செல்வர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் வரிதண்டுவோருக்குத் தலைவர். இயேசு யார் என்று அவர் பார்க்க விரும்பினார்; மக்கள் திரளாய்க் கூடியிருந்ததால் அவரைப் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை. ஏனெனில், சக்கேயு குட்டையாய் இருந்தார். அவர் முன்னே ஓடிப்போய், அவரைப் பார்ப்பதற்காக ஒரு காட்டு அத்தி மரத்தில் ஏறிக்கொண்டார். இயேசு அவ்வழியேதான் வரவிருந்தார்.

இயேசு அந்த இடத்திற்கு வந்தவுடன், அண்ணாந்து பார்த்து அவரிடம், “சக்கேயு, விரைவாய் இறங்கி வாரும்; இன்று உமது வீட்டில் நான் தங்க வேண்டும்” என்றார். அவர் விரைவாய் இறங்கி வந்து மகிழ்ச்சியோடு அவரை வரவேற்றார். இதைக் கண்ட யாவரும், “பாவியிடம் தங்கப் போயிருக்கிறாரே இவர்” என்று முணுமுணுத்தனர். சக்கேயு எழுந்து நின்று, “ஆண்டவரே, என் உடைமைகளில் பாதியை ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடுத்துவிடுகிறேன்; எவர் மீதாவது பொய்க்குற்றம் சுமத்தி எதையாவது கவர்ந்திருந்தால் நான் அதை நான்கு மடங்காகத் திருப்பிக் கொடுத்து விடுகிறேன்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார். இயேசு அவரை நோக்கி, “இன்று இந்த வீட்டிற்கு மீட்பு உண்டாயிற்று; ஏனெனில் இவரும் ஆபிரகாமின் மகனே! இழந்து போனதைத் தேடி மீட்கவே மானிடமகன் வந்திருக்கிறார்” என்று சொன்னார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

நாங்கள் உங்களுக்காக என்றும் இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுகிறோம். நம் கடவுள் தாம் விடுத்த அழைப்புக்கு உங்களைத் தகுதியுள்ளவராக்குவாராக! உங்கள் நல்லெண்ணம் ஒவ்வொன்றையும், நம்பிக்கையால் தூண்டப்படும் ஒவ்வொரு செயலையும் தம் வல்லமையால் நிறைவுறச் செய்வாராக! இவ்வாறு நம் கடவுளும் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவும் அளிக்கும் அருளுக்கேற்ப, உங்களால் நம் ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசுவின் பெயருக்கும் அவரால் உங்களுக்கும் மேன்மை உண்டாகுக!

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, நம் ஆண்டவர் இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் வருகையைப் பற்றியும் அவரோடு நாம் ஒன்று கூடுவதைப் பற்றியும் உங்களுக்கு நாங்கள் கூற விழைவது: ஆண்டவருடைய நாள் வந்துவிட்டது என, இறைவாக்காகவோ அருளுரையாகவோ நாங்கள் எழுதிய திருமுகத்தின் செய்தியாகவோ யாராவது சொன்னால், நீங்கள் உடனே மனங்கலங்கி நிலைகுலைய வேண்டாம்; திகிலுறவும் வேண்டாம்.

ஆண்டவரே, தராசில் மிக நுண்ணிய எடை வேறுபாடு காட்டும் தூசி போலவும் நிலத்தின்மீது விழும் காலைப் பனியின் ஒரு சிறு துளி போலவும் உலகம் முழுவதும் உம் கண்முன் உள்ளது. நீர் எல்லாம் வல்லவராய் இருப்பதால் எல்லார் மீதும் இரங்குகின்றீர்; மனிதர்கள் தங்களுடைய பாவங்களை விட்டு மனந்திரும்பும் பொருட்டே நீர் அவற்றைப் பார்த்தும் பாராமல் இருக்கின்றீர். படைப்புகள் அனைத்தின் மீதும் நீர் அன்புகூர்கிறீர். நீர் படைத்த எதையும் வெறுப்பதில்லை. ஏனெனில் நீர் எதையாவது வெறுத்திருந்தால் அதைப் படைத்திருக்கவே மாட்டீர்!

உமது திருவுளமின்றி எதுதான் நீடித்திருக்க முடியும்? அல்லது, உம்மால் உண்டாக்கப்படாதிருந்தால் எதுதான் காப்பாற்றப்படக்கூடும்? ஆண்டவரே, உயிர்கள்மீது அன்புகூர்கின்றவரே, நீர் எல்லாவற்றையும் வாழவிடுகின்றீர்; ஏனெனில் அவை யாவும் உம்முடையன.

உம்முடைய அழியா ஆவி எல்லாவற்றிலும் உள்ளது. ஆகையால் தவறு செய்பவர்களைச் சிறிதுசிறிதாய்த் திருத்துகின்றீர்; அவர்கள் எவற்றால் பாவம் செய்கிறார்களோ அவற்றை நினைவுபடுத்தி அவர்களை எச்சரிக்கின்றீர்; ஆண்டவரே, அவர்கள் தீமையிலிருந்து விடுபடவும் உம்மேல் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளவுமே இவ்வாறு செய்கின்றீர்.

Salvation comes to the house of Zacchaeus

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 19:1-10 

Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the town when a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance: he was one of the senior tax collectors and a wealthy man. He was anxious to see what kind of man Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way. When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him: ‘Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I must stay at your house today.’ And he hurried down and welcomed him joyfully. They all complained when they saw what was happening. ‘He has gone to stay at a sinner’s house’ they said. But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, ‘Look, sir, I am going to give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek out and save what was lost.’

The name of Christ will be glorified in you, and you in him

A Reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to Thessalonians 1:11-2:2 

We pray continually that our God will make you worthy of his call, and by his power fulfil all your desires for goodness and complete all that you have been doing through faith; because in this way the name of our Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified in you and you in him, by the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  To turn now, brothers, to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and how we shall all be gathered round him: please do not get excited too soon or alarmed by any prediction or rumour or any letter claiming to come from us, implying that the Day of the Lord has already arrived.
