Salvation comes to the house of Zacchaeus

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 19:1-10 

Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the town when a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance: he was one of the senior tax collectors and a wealthy man. He was anxious to see what kind of man Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way. When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him: ‘Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I must stay at your house today.’ And he hurried down and welcomed him joyfully. They all complained when they saw what was happening. ‘He has gone to stay at a sinner’s house’ they said. But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, ‘Look, sir, I am going to give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek out and save what was lost.’

Apocalypse 3:1-6,14-22 

I, John, heard the Lord saying to me: ‘Write to the angel of the church in Sardis and say, “Here is the message of the one who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars: I know all about you: how you are reputed to be alive and yet are dead. Wake up; revive what little you have left: it is dying fast. So far I have failed to notice anything in the way you live that my God could possibly call perfect, and yet do you remember how eager you were when you first heard the message? Hold on to that. Repent. If you do not wake up, I shall come to you like a thief, without telling you at what hour to expect me. There are a few in Sardis, it is true, who have kept their robes from being dirtied, and they are fit to come with me, dressed in white. Those who prove victorious will be dressed, like these, in white robes; I shall not blot their names out of the book of life, but acknowledge their names in the presence of my Father and his angels. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.”

  ‘Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea and say, “Here is the message of the Amen, the faithful, the true witness, the ultimate source of God’s creation: I know all about you: how you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other, but since you are neither, but only lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth. You say to yourself, ‘I am rich, I have made a fortune, and have everything I want’, never realising that you are wretchedly and pitiably poor, and blind and naked too. I warn you, buy from me the gold that has been tested in the fire to make you really rich, and white robes to clothe you and cover your shameful nakedness, and eye ointment to put on your eyes so that you are able to see. I am the one who reproves and disciplines all those he loves: so repent in real earnest. Look, I am standing at the door, knocking. If one of you hears me calling and opens the door, I will come in to share his meal, side by side with him. Those who prove victorious I will allow to share my throne, just as I was victorious myself and took my place with my Father on his throne. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.”’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எரிகோவை நெருங்கி வந்தபோது, பார்வையற்ற ஒருவர் வழியோரமாய் உட்கார்ந்து பிச்சையெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். மக்கள் கூட்டம் கடந்து போய்க்கொண்டிருந்ததைக் கவனித்த அவர், “இது என்ன?” என்று வினவினார். நாசரேத்து இயேசு போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்று அவருக்குத் தெரிவித்தார்கள்.

உடனே அவர், “இயேசுவே! தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்” என்று கூக்குரலிட்டார். முன்னே சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் அமைதியாய் இருக்குமாறு அவரை அதட்டினார்கள். ஆனால் அவர், “தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்” என்று இன்னும் உரக்கக் கத்தினார்.

இயேசு நின்று, அவரைத் தம்மிடம் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வரும்படி ஆணையிட்டார்.

அவர் நெருங்கி வந்ததும், “நான் உமக்கு என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறீர்?” என்று இயேசு கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர், “ஆண்டவரே, நான் மீண்டும் பார்வை பெற வேண்டும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “பார்வை பெறும்; உமது நம்பிக்கை உம்மை நலமாக்கிற்று” என்றார்.

அவர் உடனே பார்வை பெற்று, கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்து கொண்டே இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றினார். இதைக் கண்ட மக்கள் யாவரும் கடவுளைப் புகழ்ந்தனர்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

இது இயேசு கிறிஸ்து அருளிய திருவெளிப்பாடு. விரைவில் நிகழவேண்டியவற்றைத் தம் பணியாளர்களுக்குக் காட்டுமாறு கடவுள் இவ்வெளிப்பாட்டைக் கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு அருளினார். அவர் தம் வான தூதரை அனுப்பித் தம் பணியாளராகிய யோவானுக்கு அவற்றைத் தெரிவித்தார். அவர் கடவுள் அருளிய வாக்குக்கும் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து வெளிப்படுத்திய உண்மைக்கும், ஏன், தாம் கண்டவை அனைத்துக்குமே சான்று பகர்ந்தார். இந்த இறைவாக்குகளைப் படிப்போரும் இவற்றைக் கேட்போரும் இந்நூலில் எழுதியுள்ளவற்றைக் கடைப்பிடிப்போரும் பேறுபெற்றோர். இதோ! காலம் நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது.

ஆசியாவில் உள்ள ஏழு திருச்சபைகளுக்கும் யோவான் எழுதுவது: இருந்தவரும் இருக்கின்றவரும் வரவிருக்கின்றவருமான கடவுளிடமிருந்தும், அவரது அரியணை முன் நிற்கும் ஏழு ஆவிகளிடமிருந்தும், இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவிடமிருந்தும் உங்களுக்கு அருளும் அமைதியும் உரித்தாகுக!

“எபேசில் உள்ள திருச்சபையின் வானதூதருக்கு இவ்வாறு எழுது: ‘தமது வலக் கையில் ஏழு விண்மீன்களை உறுதியாய்ப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, ஏழு பொன் விளக்குத் தண்டுகள் நடுவில் நடப்பவர் கூறுவது இதுவே: உன் செயல்களையும் கடின உழைப்பையும் மனவுறுதியையும் நான் அறிவேன். தீயவர்களை உன்னால் சகித்துக்கொள்ள முடியாது என்பதும், திருத்தூதர்களாய் இல்லாதிருந்தும் தங்களை அவ்வாறு திருத்தூதர்கள் என அழைத்துக் கொள்ளுகின்றவர்களை நீ சோதித்துப் பார்த்து, அவர்கள் பொய்யர்கள் என்று கண்டறிந்தாய் என்பதும் எனக்குத் தெரியும். நீ மனவுறுதி கொண்டுள்ளாய்; என் பெயரின் பொருட்டு எத்தனையோ துன்பங்களை நீ தாங்கிக் கொண்டுள்ளாய்; ஆயினும் சோர்வு அடையவில்லை என்பதும் எனக்குத் தெரியும்.

ஆனால் உன்னிடம் நான் காணும் குறை யாதெனில், முதலில் உன்னிடம் விளங்கிய அன்பு இப்போது இல்லை. ஆகையால் நீ எந்நிலையிலிருந்து தவறி விழுந்துவிட்டாய் என்பதை நினைத்துப்பார்; மனம் மாறு; முதலில் நீ செய்துவந்த செயல்களை இப்பொழுதும் செய்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 18: 35-43 

As Jesus drew near to Jericho there was a blind man sitting at the side of the road begging. When he heard the crowd going past he asked what it was all about, and they told him that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by. So he called out, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.’ The people in front scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he shouted all the louder, ‘Son of David, have pity on me.’ Jesus stopped and ordered them to bring the man to him, and when he came up, asked him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Sir,’ he replied ‘let me see again.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.’ And instantly his sight returned and he followed him praising God, and all the people who saw it gave praise to God for what had happened.

Think what you were before you fell, and repent

Apocalypse 1:1-4,2:1-5 

This is the revelation given by God to Jesus Christ so that he could tell his servants about the things which are now to take place very soon; he sent his angel to make it known to his servant John, and John has written down everything he saw and swears it is the word of God guaranteed by Jesus Christ. Happy the man who reads this prophecy, and happy those who listen to him, if they treasure all that it says, because the Time is close.

  From John, to the seven churches of Asia: grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come, from the seven spirits in his presence before his throne.

  I heard the Lord saying to me: ‘Write to the angel of the church in Ephesus and say, “Here is the message of the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand and who lives surrounded by the seven golden lamp-stands: I know all about you: how hard you work and how much you put up with. I know you cannot stand wicked men, and how you tested the impostors who called themselves apostles and proved they were liars. Know, too, that you have patience, and have suffered for my name without growing tired. Nevertheless, I have this complaint to make; you have less love now than you used to. Think where you were before you fell; repent, and do as you used to at first.”

அக்காலத்தில்

கோவிலைப் பற்றிச் சிலர் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். கவின்மிகு கற்களாலும், நேர்ச்சைப் பொருள்களாலும் கோவில் அழகுபடுத்தப் பட்டிருக்கிறது என்று சிலர் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். இயேசு, “இவற்றையெல்லாம் பார்க்கிறீர்கள் அல்லவா? ஒரு காலம் வரும்; அப்போது கற்கள் ஒன்றின் மேல் ஒன்று இராதபடி இவையெல்லாம் இடிக்கப்படும்” என்றார்.

அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், “போதகரே, நீர் கூறியவை எப்போது நிகழும்? இவை நிகழப்போகும் காலத்திற்கான அறிகுறி என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார்கள்.

அதற்கு அவர், “நீங்கள் ஏமாறாதவாறு பார்த்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள்; ஏனெனில் பலர் என் பெயரை வைத்துக்கொண்டு வந்து, ‘நானே அவர்’ என்றும், ‘காலம் நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது’ என்றும் கூறுவார்கள்; அவர்கள் பின்னே போகாதீர்கள். ஆனால் போர் முழக்கங்களையும் குழப்பங்களையும் பற்றிக் கேள்விப்படும்போது திகிலுறாதீர்கள்; ஏனெனில் இவை முதலில் நிகழத்தான் வேண்டும். ஆனால் உடனே முடிவு வராது” என்றார்.

மேலும் அவர் அவர்களிடம் தொடர்ந்து கூறியது: “நாட்டை எதிர்த்து நாடும் அரசை எதிர்த்து அரசும் எழும். பெரிய நிலநடுக்கங்களும் பல இடங்களில் பஞ்சமும் கொள்ளை நோயும் ஏற்படும்; அச்சுறுத்தக்கூடிய பெரிய அடையாளங்களும் வானில் தோன்றும்.

இவை அனைத்தும் நடந்தேறுமுன் அவர்கள் உங்களைப் பிடித்துத் துன்புறுத்துவார்கள்; தொழுகைக்கூடங்களுக்குக் கொண்டு செல்வார்கள்: சிறையில் அடைப்பார்கள்; என் பெயரின் பொருட்டு அரசரிடமும் ஆளுநரிடமும் இழுத்துச் செல்வார்கள். எனக்குச் சான்று பகர இவை உங்களுக்கு வாய்ப்பளிக்கும். அப்போது என்ன பதில் அளிப்பது என முன்னதாகவே நீங்கள் கவலைப்பட வேண்டாம்.

இதை உங்கள் மனத்தில் வைத்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள். ஏனெனில் நானே உங்களுக்கு நாவன்மையையும் ஞானத்தையும் கொடுப்பேன்; உங்கள் எதிரில் எவராலும் உங்களை எதிர்த்து நிற்கவும் எதிர்த்துப் பேசவும் முடியாது.

ஆனால் உங்கள் பெற்றோரும் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளும் உறவினர்களும் நண்பர்களும் உங்களைக் காட்டிக்கொடுப்பார்கள்; உங்களுள் சிலரைக் கொல்வார்கள். என் பெயரின் பொருட்டு எல்லாரும் உங்களை வெறுப்பார்கள். இருப்பினும் உங்கள் தலைமுடி ஒன்றுகூட விழவே விழாது. நீங்கள் மன உறுதியோடு இருந்து உங்கள் வாழ்வைக் காத்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள்” என்றார்.
