ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமுடன் உடன்படிக்கை செய்தார்.

தொடக்க நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 15: 1-12, 17-18

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு ஆபிராமுக்கு ஒரு காட்சி வழியாக வந்து அறிவித்தது: “ஆபிராம்! அஞ்சாதே. நான் உனக்குக் கேடயமாக இருப்பேன். உனக்குப் பெரும் கைம்மாறு கிடைக்கும்.” அப்பொழுது ஆபிராம், “என் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவரே, எனக்கு என்னதான் தருவீர்? எனக்கோ குழந்தையே இல்லை! தமஸ்கு நகர் எலியேசர்தான் எனக்குப்பின் என் இல்லத்திற்கு உரிமை மகன் ஆகப்போகிறான்! நீர் எனக்குக் குழந்தை ஒன்றும் தராததால் என் வீட்டு அடிமை மகன் எனக்குப் பின் உரிமையாளன் ஆகப் போகிறான்” என்றார்.

அதற்கு மறுமொழியாக, “இவன் உனக்குப்பின் உரிமையாளன் ஆகமாட்டான். ஆனால், உனக்குப் பிறப்பவனே உனக்குப் பின் உரிமையாளன் ஆவான்” என்று ஆபிராமுக்கு ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு அருளப்பட்டது. அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமை வெளியே அழைத்து வந்து, “வானத்தை நிமிர்ந்து பார். முடியுமானால், விண்மீன்களை எண்ணிப் பார். இவற்றைப் போலவே உன் வழிமரபினரும் இருப்பர்” என்றார். ஆபிராம் ஆண்டவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். அதை ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு நீதியாகக் கருதினார்.

ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமிடம், “இந்நாட்டை உனக்கு உரிமைச் சொத்தாக அளிக்க உன்னைக் கல்தேயரின் ஊர் என்ற நகரிலிருந்து இங்கு அழைத்து வந்த ஆண்டவர் நானே” என்றார். அதற்கு ஆபிராம், “என் தலைவராகிய ஆண்டவரே, இதை நான் உரிமையாக்கிக் கொள்வேன் என்பதை எப்படித் தெரிந்து கொள்வேன்?” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமிடம், “மூன்று வயதுள்ள இளம் பசு, மூன்று வயதுள்ள வெள்ளாடு, மூன்று வயதுள்ள செம்மறியாடு, ஒரு காட்டுப்புறா, ஒரு மாடப்புறா ஆகியவற்றை என்னிடம் கொண்டுவா” என்றார். ஆபிராம் இவற்றை எல்லாம் அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்து, அவைகளை இரண்டிரண்டு கூறுகளாக வெட்டி, ஒவ்வொரு பகுதியையும் அததற்கு இணையான பகுதிக்கு எதிரெதிரே வைத்தார். ஆனால் பறவைகளை அவர் வெட்டவில்லை. துண்டித்த உடல்களைப் பறவைகள் தின்ன வந்தபொழுது ஆபிராம் அவற்றை விரட்டிவிட்டார்.

கதிரவன் மறையும் நேரத்தில் ஆபிராமுக்கு ஆழ்ந்த உறக்கம் வந்தது. அச்சுறுத்தும் காரிருள் அவரைச் சூழ்ந்தது. கதிரவன் மறைந்ததும் இருள் படர்ந்தது. அப்பொழுது புகைந்து கொண்டிருந்த தீச்சட்டி ஒன்றும் எரிந்து கொண்டிருந்த தீப்பந்தம் ஒன்றும் அந்தக் கூறுகளுக்கிடையே சென்றன. அன்றே ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமுடன் ஓர் உடன்படிக்கை செய்து, “எகிப்திலுள்ள ஆற்றிலிருந்து யூப்பிரத்தீசு பேராறு வரை உள்ள இந்நாட்டை உன் வழிமரபினர்க்கு வழங்குவேன்” என்றார்.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Beware of false prophets who come to you disguised as sheep but underneath are ravenous wolves. You will be able to tell them by their fruits. Can people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, a sound tree produces good fruit but a rotten tree bad fruit. A sound tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor a rotten tree bear good fruit. Any tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire. I repeat, you will be able to tell them by their fruits.’

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 15:1-12,17-18 

It happened that the word of the Lord was spoken to Abram in a vision, ‘Have no fear, Abram, I am your shield; your reward will be very great.’

  ‘My Lord,’ Abram replied ‘what do you intend to give me? I go childless…’. Then Abram said, ‘See, you have given me no descendants; some man of my household will be my heir.’ And then this word of the Lord was spoken to him, ‘He shall not be your heir; your heir shall be of your own flesh and blood.’ Then taking him outside he said, ‘Look up to heaven and count the stars if you can. Such will be your descendants’ he told him. Abram put his faith in the Lord, who counted this as making him justified.

  ‘I am the Lord’ he said to him ‘who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldaeans to make you heir to this land.’ ‘My Lord,’ Abram replied ‘how am I to know that I shall inherit it?’ He said to him, ‘Get me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove and a young pigeon.’ He brought him all these, cut them in half and put half on one side and half facing it on the other; but the birds he did not cut in half. Birds of prey came down on the carcases but Abram drove them off.

  Now as the sun was setting Abram fell into a deep sleep, and terror seized him. When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, there appeared a smoking furnace and a firebrand that went between the halves. That day the Lord made a Covenant with Abram in these terms:

‘To your descendants I give this land,

from the wadi of Egypt to the Great River,

the river Euphrates.’

அந்நாள்களில்

ஆபிராம் கால்நடைகளும் வெள்ளியும் தங்கமும் கொண்ட பெரிய செல்வராக இருந்தார். ஆபிராமுடன் சென்ற லோத்துக்கும் ஆட்டு மந்தைகளும் மாட்டு மந்தைகளும் கூடாரங்களும் இருந்தன. அவர்கள் சேர்ந்து வாழ்வதற்கு இடம் போதவில்லை. அவர்களுக்கு மிகுதியான உடைமைகள் இருந்ததால், அவர்களால் சேர்ந்து வாழ முடியவில்லை. ஆபிராமின் கால்நடைகளை மேய்ப்போருக்கும் லோத்தின் கால்நடைகளை மேய்ப்போருக்கும் இடையே தகராறு ஏற்பட்டது. அப்பொழுது கானானியரும் பெரிசியரும் அந்நாட்டில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர்.

ஆபிராம் லோத்தை நோக்கி, “எனக்கும் உனக்கும் என் ஆள்களுக்கும் உன் ஆள்களுக்கும் இடையே பூசல் ஏற்பட வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் நாம் உறவினர். நாடு முழுவதும் உன் கண்முன் இருக்கின்றது அல்லவா? என்னிடமிருந்து பிரிந்து செல்லும்படி கேட்டுக்கொள்ளுகிறேன். நீ இடப்பக்கம் சென்றால் நான் வலப்பக்கம் செல்வேன்; நீ வலப்பக்கம் சென்றால் நான் இடப்பக்கம் செல்வேன்” என்றார்.

லோத்து கண்களை உயர்த்தி, எங்கும் நீர்வளம் சிறந்திருந்த யோர்தானின் சுற்றுப்பகுதியைக் கண்டார். சோகார் வரை அப்பகுதி ஆண்டவரது தோட்டம் போலும் எகிப்து நாட்டைப் போலும் இருந்தது. சோதோம், கொமோராவை ஆண்டவர் அழிப்பதற்கு முன் அது அவ்வாறு இருந்தது. லோத்து யோர்தான் சுற்றுப் பகுதி முழுவதையும் தேர்ந்து கொண்டு கிழக்குப் பக்கமாகப் பயணமானார். இவ்வாறு ஒருவர் ஒருவரிடமிருந்து பிரிந்தனர். ஆபிராம் கானான் நாட்டில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். லோத்து யோர்தான் சுற்றுப் பகுதியிலிருந்த நகரங்களில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். இறுதியில் சோதோமுக்கு அருகில் கூடாரம் அமைத்துக் கொண்டார். ஆனால் சோதோமின் மக்கள் ஆண்டவருக்கு எதிரான மிகக் கொடிய பாவிகளாக இருந்தனர்.

லோத்து ஆபிராமிடமிருந்து பிரிந்தபின், ஆண்டவர் ஆபிராமை நோக்கி, “நீ இருக்கும் இடத்திலிருந்து உன் கண்களை உயர்த்தி வடக்கே, தெற்கே, கிழக்கே, மேற்கே பார். ஏனெனில் நீ காணும் இந்த நாடு முழுவதையும் உனக்கும் உன் வழிமரபினருக்கும் என்றென்றும் கொடுக்கப் போகிறேன். உன் வழிமரபினரைப் பூவுலகின் மண்ணைப் போலப் பெருகச் செய்வேன். ஆகவே பூவுலகின் மணலை ஒருவன் எண்ண முடியுமானால், உன் வழிமரபினரையும் எண்ணலாம். நீ எழுந்து, இந்நாட்டின் நெடுகிலும், குறுக்கிலும் நடந்து பார். ஏனெனில் இதை நான் உனக்குக் கொடுக்கப் போகிறேன்” என்றார்.

ஆகவே ஆபிராம் தம் கூடாரத்தைப் பிரித்துக் கொண்டு எபிரோனில் இருந்த மம்ரே என்ற கருவாலி மரத்தோப்பு அருகில் வந்து வாழ்ந்தார். அங்கே ஆண்டவருக்கு ஒரு பலிபீடம் எழுப்பினார்.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front of pigs, or they may trample them and then turn on you and tear you to pieces.

  ‘So always treat others as you would like them to treat you; that is the meaning of the Law and the Prophets.

  ‘Enter by the narrow gate, since the road that leads to perdition is wide and spacious, and many take it; but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it.’

Abram settles in the land of Canaan and builds an altar to the Lord

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 13:2,5-18

Abram was a very rich man, with livestock, silver and gold. Lot, who was travelling with Abram, had flocks and cattle of his own, and tents too. The land was not sufficient to accommodate them both at once, for they had too many possessions to be able to live together. Dispute broke out between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and those of Lot’s. (The Canaanites and the Perizzites were then living in the land.) Accordingly Abram said to Lot, ‘Let there be no dispute between me and you, nor between my herdsmen and yours, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land open before you? Part company with me: if you take the left, I will go right; if you take the right, I will go left.’

  Looking round, Lot saw all the Jordan plain, irrigated everywhere – this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah – like the garden of the Lord or the land of Egypt, as far as Zoar. So Lot chose all the Jordan plain for himself and moved off eastwards. Thus they parted company: Abram settled in the land of Canaan; Lot settled among the towns of the plain, pitching his tents on the outskirts of Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were vicious men, great sinners against the Lord.

  The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted company with him, ‘Look all round from where you are towards the north and the south, towards the east and the west. All the land within sight I will give to you and your descendants for ever. I will make your descendants like the dust on the ground: when men succeed in counting the specks of dust on the ground, then they will be able to count your descendants! Come, travel through the length and breadth of the land, for I mean to give it to you.’

  So Abram went with his tents to settle at the Oak of Mamre, at Hebron, and there he built an altar to the Lord.
