'Choose a wife for my son Isaac'

A Reading from the book of Genesis 23:1-4,19,24:1-8,62-67.

The length of Sarah’s life was a hundred and twenty-seven years. She died at Kiriath-arba, or Hebron, in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn and grieve for her.

  Then leaving his dead, Abraham spoke to the sons of Heth: ‘I am a stranger and a settler among you,’ he said. ‘Let me own a burial-plot among you, so that I may take my dead wife and bury her.’

  After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah opposite Mamre, in the country of Canaan.

  By now Abraham was an old man well on in years, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. Abraham said to the eldest servant of his household, the steward of all his property, ‘Place your hand under my thigh, I would have you swear by the Lord, God of heaven and God of earth, that you will not choose a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live. Instead, go to my own land and my own kinsfolk to choose a wife for my son Isaac.’ The servant asked him, ‘What if the woman does not want to come with me to this country? Must I take your son back to the country from which you came?’ Abraham answered, ‘On no account take my son back there. The Lord, God of heaven and God of earth, took me from my father’s home, and from the land of my kinsfolk, and he swore to me that he would give this country to my descendants. He will now send his angel ahead of you, so that you may choose a wife for my son there. And if the woman does not want to come with you, you will be free from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.’

  Isaac, who lived in the Negeb, had meanwhile come into the wilderness of the well of Lahai Roi. Now Isaac went walking in the fields as evening fell, and looking up saw camels approaching. And Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac. She jumped down from her camel, and asked the servant, ‘Who is that man walking through the fields to meet us?’ The servant replied, ‘That is my master’; then she took her veil and hid her face. The servant told Isaac the whole story, and Isaac led Rebekah into his tent and made her his wife; and he loved her. And so Isaac was consoled for the loss of his mother.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு படகேறி மறு கரைக்குச் சென்று தம் சொந்த நகரை அடைந்தார். அப்பொழுது சிலர் முடக்குவாதமுற்ற ஒருவரைக் கட்டிலில் கிடத்தி அவரிடம் கொண்டு வந்தனர். இயேசு அவர்களுடைய நம்பிக்கையைக் கண்டு முடக்குவாதமுற்றவரிடம், “மகனே, துணிவோடிரு, உம் பாவங்கள் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன” என்றார்.

அப்பொழுது மறைநூல் அறிஞர்கள் சிலர், “இவன் கடவுளைப் பழிக்கிறான்” என்று தமக்குள் சொல்லிக் கொண்டனர். அவர்களுடைய சிந்தனைகளை இயேசு அறிந்து அவர்களை நோக்கி, “உங்கள் உள்ளங்களில் நீங்கள் தீயன சிந்திப்பதேன்? ‘உன் பாவங்கள் மன்னிக்கப்பட்டன’ என்பதா, ‘எழுந்து நட’ என்பதா, எது எளிது? மண்ணுலகில் பாவங்களை மன்னிக்க மானிட மகனுக்கு அதிகாரம் உண்டு என்பதை நீங்கள் அறிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்” என்றார். எனவே அவர் முடக்குவாதமுற்றவரை நோக்கி, “நீ எழுந்து உன்னுடைய கட்டிலைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு வீட்டுக்குப் போ” என்றார். அவரும் எழுந்து தமது வீட்டுக்குப் போனார்.

இதைக் கண்ட மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினர் அச்சமுற்றனர். இத்தகைய அதிகாரத்தை மனிதருக்கு அளித்த கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்தனர்.

தொடக்க நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 22: 1-19

அந்நாள்களில்

கடவுள் ஆபிரகாமைச் சோதித்தார். அவர் அவரை நோக்கி, ஆபிரகாம்! என, அவரும் ‘இதோ! அடியேன்’ என்றார். அவர், “உன் மகனை, நீ அன்புகூரும் உன் ஒரே மகனான ஈசாக்கை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு, மோரியா நிலப் பகுதிக்குச் செல். அங்கு நான் உனக்குக் காட்டும் மலைகளில் ஒன்றின் மேல் எரிபலியாக அவனை நீ பலியிட வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

அவ்வாறே ஆபிரகாம் அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து, தமது கழுதைக்குச் சேணமிட்டு, தம் வேலைக்காரருள் இருவரையும் தம் மகன் ஈசாக்கையும் அழைத்துக் கொண்டு, எரிபலிக்கு வேண்டிய விறகுக் கட்டைகளை வெட்டியபின், கடவுள் தமக்குக் குறிப்பிட்டிருந்த இடத்தை நோக்கிப் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார். மூன்றாம் நாள் ஆபிரகாம் கண்களை உயர்த்தி அந்த இடத்தைத் தூரத்திலிருந்து பார்த்தார். உடனே ஆபிரகாம் தம் வேலைக்காரர்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் கழுதையோடு இங்கேயே காத்திருங்கள். நானும், பையனும் அவ்விடம் சென்று வழிபாடு செய்தபின் உங்களிடம் திரும்பி வருவோம்” என்றார்.

பின் ஆபிரகாம் எரிபலிக்கு வேண்டிய விறகுக் கட்டைகளை எடுத்துத் தம் மகன் ஈசாக்கின்மீது வைத்தார். நெருப்பையும் கத்தியையும் தம் கையில் எடுத்துக்கொண்டார். இவ்வாறு இருவரும் சேர்ந்து சென்றனர். அப்பொழுது, ஈசாக்கு தன் தந்தையாகிய ஆபிரகாமை நோக்கி, ‘அப்பா!’ என, அவர், ‘என்ன? மகனே!’ என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவன், “இதோ நெருப்பும் விறகுக் கட்டைகளும் இருக்கின்றன. எரிபலிக்கான ஆட்டுக் குட்டி எங்கே?” என்று வினவினான். அதற்கு ஆபிரகாம், “எரிபலிக்கான ஆட்டுக்குட்டியைப் பொறுத்தமட்டில், கடவுளே பார்த்துக்கொள்வார் மகனே” என்றார். இருவரும் சேர்ந்து தொடர்ந்து நடந்தனர்.

ஆபிரகாமுக்குக் கடவுள் குறிப்பிட்டுச் சொல்லிய இடத்தை அவர்கள் அடைந்தனர். அங்கே ஆபிரகாம் ஒரு பலிபீடம் அமைத்து, அதன்மேல் விறகுக் கட்டைகளை அடுக்கி வைத்தார். பின் தம் மகன் ஈசாக்கைக் கட்டி, பீடத்தின்மீது இருந்த விறகுக் கட்டைகளின்மேல் கிடத்தினார். ஆபிரகாம் தம் மகனை வெட்டுமாறு தம் கையை நீட்டிக் கத்தியைக் கையில் எடுத்தார். அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் வானத்தினின்று ‘ஆபிரகாம்! ஆபிரகாம்’ என்று கூப்பிட, அவர் ‘இதோ! அடியேன்’ என்றார். அவர், “பையன்மேல் கை வைக்காதே; அவனுக்கு எதுவும் செய்யாதே; உன் ஒரே மகனையும் எனக்குப் பலியிட நீ தயங்கவில்லை என்பதிலிருந்து நீ கடவுளுக்கு அஞ்சுபவன் என்று இப்போது நான் அறிந்துகொண்டேன்” என்றார். அப்பொழுது ஆபிரகாம் தம் கண்களை உயர்த்திப் பார்த்தார். இதோ, முட்செடியில் கொம்பு மாட்டிக்கொண்டு நின்ற ஓர் ஆட்டுக்கிடாயைக் கண்டார். உடனே ஆபிரகாம் அங்குச் சென்று அந்தக் கிடாயைப் பிடித்து தம் மகனுக்குப் பதிலாக எரிபலியாக்கினார். எனவே, ஆபிரகாம் அந்த இடத்திற்கு ‘யாவேயிரே’ என்று பெயரிட்டார். ஆதலால்தான் ‘மலையில் ஆண்டவர் பார்த்துக்கொள்வார்’ என்று இன்றுவரை வழங்கி வருகிறது.

ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் ஆபிரகாமை வானத்தினின்று மீண்டும் அழைத்து, “ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது இதுவே! நான் என்மீது ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறுகிறேன். உன் ஒரே மகனை எனக்குப் பலியிடத் தயங்காமல் நீ இவ்வாறு செய்தாய். ஆதலால் நான் உன்மீது உண்மையாகவே ஆசி பொழிந்து, விண்மீன்களைப் போலவும் கடற்கரை மணலைப் போலவும் உன் வழிமரபைப் பலுகிப் பெருகச் செய்வேன். உன் வழிமரபினர் தம் பகைவர்களின் வாயிலை உரிமையாக்கிக் கொள்வர். மேலும், நீ என் குரலுக்குச் செவி கொடுத்ததனால் உலகின் அனைத்து இனத்தவரும் உன் வழிமரபின் மூலம் தங்களுக்கு ஆசி கூறிக்கொள்வர்” என்றார்.

பின் ஆபிரகாம் தம் வேலைக்காரரிடம் திரும்பி வந்தார். அவர்கள் ஒன்று சேர்ந்து பெயேர்செபாவுக்குத் திரும்பிச் சென்றார்கள். அங்கேயே ஆபிரகாம் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார்.

'Your sins are forgiven; get up and walk'

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9:1-8

Jesus got in the boat, crossed the water and came to his own town. Then some people appeared, bringing him a paralytic stretched out on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘Courage, my child, your sins are forgiven.’ And at this some scribes said to themselves, ‘This man is blaspheming.’ Knowing what was in their minds Jesus said, ‘Why do you have such wicked thoughts in your hearts? Now, which of these is easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Get up and walk”? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,’ – he said to the paralytic – ‘get up, and pick up your bed and go off home.’ And the man got up and went home. A feeling of awe came over the crowd when they saw this, and they praised God for giving such power to men.

A Reading from the Book of Genesis 22:1-19 

God put Abraham to the test. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he called. ‘Here I am’ he replied. ‘Take your son,’ God said ‘your only child Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him as a burnt offering, on a mountain I will point out to you.’

  Rising early next morning Abraham saddled his ass and took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. He chopped wood for the burnt offering and started on his journey to the place God had pointed out to him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. Then Abraham said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there; we will worship and come back to you.’

  Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering, loaded it on Isaac, and carried in his own hands the fire and the knife. Then the two of them set out together. Isaac spoke to his father Abraham, ‘Father’ he said. ‘Yes, my son’ he replied. ‘Look,’ he said ‘here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ Abraham answered, ‘My son, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering.’ Then the two of them went on together.

  When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and seized the knife to kill his son.

  But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied. ‘Do not raise your hand against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’ Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of his son. Abraham called this place ‘The Lord Provides’, and hence the saying today: On the mountain the Lord provides.

  The angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time from heaven. ‘I swear by my own self – it is the Lord who speaks – because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only son, I will shower blessings on you, I will make your descendants as many as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants shall gain possession of the gates of their enemies. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, as a reward for your obedience.’

  Abraham went back to his servants, and together they set out for Beersheba, and he settled in Beersheba.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு கலிலேயாவின் மறு கரையை அடைந்து கதரேனர் வாழ்ந்த பகுதிக்கு வந்தபோது, பேய் பிடித்த இருவர் கல்லறைகளிலிருந்து வெளியேறி அவருக்கு எதிரே வந்துகொண்டிருந்தனர். அவ்வழியே யாரும் போகமுடியாத அளவுக்கு அவர்கள் மிகவும் கொடியவர்களாய் இருந்தார்கள். அவர்கள், “இறைமகனே, உமக்கு இங்கு என்ன வேலை? குறித்த காலம் வருமுன்னே எங்களை வதைக்கவா இங்கே வந்தீர்?” என்று கத்தினார்கள்.

அவர்களிடமிருந்து சற்றுத் தொலையில் பன்றிகள் பெருங்கூட்டமாய் மேய்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தன. பேய்கள் அவரிடம், “நீர் எங்களை ஓட்டுவதாயிருந்தால் அப்பன்றிக் கூட்டத்திற்குள் எங்களை அனுப்பும்” என்று வேண்டின. அவர் அவற்றிடம், “போங்கள்” என்றார். அவை வெளியேறிப் பன்றிகளுக்குள் புகுந்தன. உடனே அக்கூட்டம் முழுவதும் செங்குத்துப் பாறையிலிருந்து கடலில் பாய்ந்து நீரில் வீழ்ந்து மடிந்தது.

பன்றிகளை மேய்த்துக்கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் ஓடிப்போனார்கள். அவர்கள் நகருக்குள் சென்று, பேய் பிடித்தவர்களைப் பற்றிய செய்தியையும், நடந்த அனைத்தையுமே அறிவித்தார்கள். உடனே நகரினர் அனைவரும் இயேசுவுக்கு எதிர் கொண்டு வந்து, அவரைக் கண்டு, தங்கள் பகுதியை விட்டு அகலுமாறு வேண்டிக்கொண்டனர்.
