'Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?'

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 20:20-28 

The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons to make a request of him, and bowed low; and he said to her, ‘What is it you want?’ She said to him, ‘Promise that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your kingdom.’ ‘You do not know what you are asking’ Jesus answered. ‘Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ ‘Very well,’ he said ‘you shall drink my cup, but as for seats at my right hand and my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted by my Father.’

  When the other ten heard this they were indignant with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that among the pagans the rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

Such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us.

A reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 4:7-15 

We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us. We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered; we see no answer to our problems, but never despair; we have been persecuted, but never deserted; knocked down, but never killed; always, wherever we may be, we carry with us in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus, too, may always be seen in our body. Indeed, while we are still alive, we are consigned to our death every day, for the sake of Jesus, so that in our mortal flesh the life of Jesus, too, may be openly shown. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

  But as we have the same spirit of faith that is mentioned in scripture – I believed, and therefore I spoke – we too believe and therefore we too speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus to life will raise us with Jesus in our turn, and put us by his side and you with us. You see, all this is for your benefit, so that the more grace is multiplied among people, the more thanksgiving there will be, to the glory of God.

அந்நாள்களில்

மக்கள் ஓடிப் போய்விட்டார்கள் என எகிப்திய மன்னனுக்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டபோது, பார்வோனின் மனமும் அவன் அலுவலர் மனமும் இம்மக்களைப் பொறுத்தமட்டில் மாற்றம் கண்டது. “நாம் இப்படிச் செய்துவிட்டோமே! நமக்கு ஊழியம் செய்த இஸ்ரயேலரை ஏன்தான் அனுப்பிவிட்டோம்?” என்று அவர்கள் பேசிக்கொண்டனர். எனவே அவன் தன் தேரைப் பூட்டித் தன் ஆள்களையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு கிளம்பினான். தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட அறுநூறு தேர்களையும், மற்றும் எகிப்திலிருந்த எல்லாத் தேர்களையும், அவற்றின் படைத்தலைவர்கள் அனைவரையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு புறப்பட்டான்.

பார்வோன் நெருங்கிவந்துகொண்டிருக்க, இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களும் தம் கண்களை உயர்த்தி எகிப்தியர் தங்களைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்து கொண்டிருப்பதைக் கண்டனர். பெரிதும் அச்சமுற்றவராய் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் ஆண்டவரை நோக்கிக் கூக்குரல் எழுப்பினர். அவர்கள் மோசேயை நோக்கி, “எகிப்தில் சவக்குழிகள் இல்லையென்றா நீர் எங்களைப் பாலைநிலத்தில் சாவதற்கு இழுத்து வந்தீர்? எகிப்திலிருந்து எங்களை வெளியேற்றி இப்படி எங்களுக்குச் செய்துவிட்டீரே! ‘எங்களை விட்டு விடும்; நாங்கள் எகிப்தியர்களுக்கு ஊழியம் செய்வோம்’ என்பதுதானே எகிப்தில் நாங்கள் உம்மிடம் கூறிய வார்த்தை! ஏனெனில் பாலைநிலத்தில் செத்தொழிவதைவிட, எகிப்தியருக்கு ஊழியம் செய்வதே எங்களுக்கு நலம்” என்றனர்.

மோசே மக்களை நோக்கி, “அஞ்சாதீர்கள்! நிலைகுலையாதீர்கள்! இன்று ஆண்டவர்தாமே உங்களுக்காக ஆற்றும் விடுதலைச் செயலைப் பாருங்கள். இன்று நீங்கள் காணும் எகிப்தியரை இனிமேல் என்றுமே காணப் போவதில்லை. ஆண்டவரே உங்களுக்காகப் போரிடுவார்; நீங்கள் அமைதியாயிருங்கள்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் மோசேயை நோக்கி, “ஏன் என்னை நோக்கி அழவேண்டும்? முன்னோக்கிச் செல்லும்படி இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடம் சொல். கோலை உயர்த்திப் பிடித்தவாறு உன் கையைக் கடல்மேல் நீட்டி அதனைப் பிரித்து விடு. இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் கடல் நடுவே உலர்ந்த தரையில் நடந்து செல்வார்கள். நான் எகிப்தியரின் மனத்தைக் கடினப்படுத்துவேன். அவர்கள் இஸ்ரயேலரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து செல்வார்கள். அப்போது பார்வோனையும் அவனுடைய படைகள், தேர்கள், குதிரை வீரர்கள் அனைவரையும் வென்று நான் மாட்சியுறுவேன். பார்வோனையும் அவன் தேர்களையும் குதிரை வீரர்கள் அனைவரையும் வென்று நான் மாட்சியுறும்போது, ‘நானே ஆண்டவர்’ என்று எகிப்தியர் உணர்ந்து கொள்வர்” என்றார்.

There is something greater than Solomon here

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 12: 38-42 

Some of the scribes and Pharisees spoke up. ‘Master,’ they said ‘we should like to see a sign from you.’ He replied, ‘It is an evil and unfaithful generation that asks for a sign! The only sign it will be given is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the sea-monster for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.’

Pharaoh sets out in pursuit of the sons of Israel

A reading from the book of Exodus 14:5-18 

When Pharaoh, king of Egypt, was told that the Israelites had made their escape, he and his courtiers changed their minds about the people. ‘What have we done,’ they said ‘allowing Israel to leave our service?’ So Pharaoh had his chariot harnessed and gathered his troops about him, taking six hundred of the best chariots and all the other chariots in Egypt, each manned by a picked team. The Lord made Pharaoh, king of Egypt, stubborn, and he gave chase to the sons of Israel as they made their triumphant escape. So the Egyptians gave chase and came up with them where they lay encamped beside the sea – all the horses, the chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, his army – near Pi-hahiroth, facing Baal-zephon. And as Pharaoh approached, the sons of Israel looked round – and there were the Egyptians in pursuit of them!

  The sons of Israel were terrified and cried out to the Lord. To Moses they said, ‘Were there no graves in Egypt that you must lead us out to die in the wilderness? What good have you done us, bringing us out of Egypt? We spoke of this in Egypt, did we not? Leave us alone, we said, we would rather work for the Egyptians! Better to work for the Egyptians than die in the wilderness!’

  Moses answered the people, ‘Have no fear! Stand firm, and you will see what the Lord will do to save you today: the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. The Lord will do the fighting for you: you have only to keep still.’

  The Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry to me so? Tell the sons of Israel to march on. For yourself, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and part it for the sons of Israel to walk through the sea on dry ground. I for my part will make the heart of the Egyptians so stubborn that they will follow them. So shall I win myself glory at the expense of Pharaoh, of all his army, his chariots, his horsemen. And when I have won glory for myself, at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and his army, the Egyptians will learn that I am the Lord.’

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்திற்கு எடுத்துரைத்த வேறு ஓர் உவமை: “விண்ணரசைப் பின்வரும் நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு ஒப்பிடலாம். ஒருவர் தம் வயலில் நல்ல விதைகளை விதைத்தார். அவருடைய ஆள்கள் தூங்கும்போது அவருடைய பகைவன் வந்து கோதுமைகளுக்கு இடையே களைகளை விதைத்து விட்டுப் போய்விட்டான்.

பயிர் வளர்ந்து கதிர்விட்டபோது களைகளும் காணப்பட்டன. நிலக்கிழாருடைய பணியாளர்கள் அவரிடம் வந்து, ‘ஐயா, நீர் உமது வயலில் நல்ல விதைகளை அல்லவா விதைத்தீர்? அதில் களைகள் காணப்படுவது எப்படி?’ என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், ‘இது பகைவனுடைய வேலை’ என்றார். உடனே பணியாளர்கள் அவரிடம், ‘நாங்கள் போய் அவற்றைப் பறித்துக்கொண்டு வரலாமா? உம் விருப்பம் என்ன?’ என்று கேட்டார்கள். அவர், ‘வேண்டாம், களைகளைப் பறிக்கும்போது அவற்றோடு சேர்த்துக் கோதுமையையும் நீங்கள் பிடுங்கிவிடக்கூடும். அறுவடைவரை இரண்டையும் வளரவிடுங்கள். அறுவடை நேரத்தில் அறுவடை செய்வோரிடம், ‘முதலில் களைகளைப் பறித்துக்கொண்டு வந்து எரிப்பதற்கெனக் கட்டுகளாகக் கட்டுங்கள். கோதுமையையோ என் களஞ்சியத்தில் சேர்த்து வையுங்கள்’ என்று கூறுவேன்” என்றார்.

இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்த வேறு ஓர் உவமை: “ஒருவர் கடுகு விதையை எடுத்துத் தம் வயலில் விதைத்தார். அவ்விதை எல்லா விதைகளையும் விடச் சிறியது. ஆனாலும், அது வளரும்போது மற்றெல்லாச் செடிகளையும் விடப் பெரியதாகும். வானத்துப் பறவைகள் அதன் கிளைகளில் வந்து தங்கும் அளவுக்குப் பெரிய மரமாகும். விண்ணரசு இக்கடுகு விதைக்கு ஒப்பாகும்.”

அவர் அவர்களுக்குக் கூறிய வேறு ஓர் உவமை: “பெண் ஒருவர் புளிப்பு மாவை எடுத்து மூன்று மரக்கால் மாவில் பிசைந்து வைத்தார். மாவு முழுவதும் புளிப்பேறியது. விண்ணரசு இப்புளிப்பு மாவுக்கு ஒப்பாகும்.”

இவற்றையெல்லாம் இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்துக்கு உவமைகள் வாயிலாக உரைத்தார். உவமைகள் இன்றி அவர் அவர்களோடு எதையும் பேச வில்லை. “நான் உவமைகள் வாயிலாகப் பேசுவேன்; உலகத் தோற்றமுதல் மறைந்திருப்பவற்றை விளக்குவேன்” என்று இறைவாக்கினர் உரைத்தது இவ்வாறு நிறைவேறியது. அதன்பின்பு இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினரை அனுப்பிவிட்டு வீட்டுக்குள் வந்தார். அப்போது அவருடைய சீடர்கள் அவர் அருகே வந்து, “வயலில் தோன்றிய களைகள் பற்றிய உவமையை எங்களுக்கு விளக்கிக் கூறும்” என்றனர். அதற்கு அவர் பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்:

“நல்ல விதைகளை விதைப்பவர் மானிட மகன்; வயல், இவ்வுலகம்; நல்ல விதைகள், கடவுளின் ஆட்சிக்குட்பட்ட மக்கள்; களைகள், தீயோனைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள்; அவற்றை விதைக்கும் பகைவன், அலகை; அறுவடை, உலகின் முடிவு; அறுவடை செய்வோர், வானதூதர்.

எவ்வாறு களைகளைப் பறித்துத் தீக்கிரையாக்குவார்களோ அவ்வாறே உலக முடிவிலும் நடக்கும். மானிட மகன் தம் வானதூதரை அனுப்புவார். அவர்கள் அவருடைய ஆட்சிக்குத் தடையாக உள்ள அனைவரையும் நெறி கெட்டோரையும் ஒன்றுசேர்ப்பார்கள்; பின் அவர்களைத் தீச்சூளையில் தள்ளுவார்கள். அங்கே அழுகையும் அங்கலாய்ப்பும் இருக்கும். அப்போது நேர்மையாளர் தம் தந்தையின் ஆட்சியில் கதிரவனைப் போல் ஒளி வீசுவர். கேட்கச் செவியுள்ளோர் கேட்கட்டும்.”
