Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’

A reading from the book of Jonah 3:1-10 

The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: ‘Up!’ he said ‘Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.’ Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, ‘Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.’ And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. The news reached the king of Nineveh, who rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes. A proclamation was then promulgated throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his ministers, as follows: ‘Men and beasts, herds and flocks, are to taste nothing; they must not eat, they must not drink water. All are to put on sackcloth and call on God with all their might; and let everyone renounce his evil behaviour and the wicked things he has done. Who knows if God will not change his mind and relent, if he will not renounce his burning wrath, so that we do not perish?’ God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour, and God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.

அக்காலத்தில்

திருச்சட்ட அறிஞர் ஒருவர் எழுந்து இயேசுவைச் சோதிக்கும் நோக்குடன், “போதகரே, நிலைவாழ்வை உரிமையாக்கிக்கொள்ள நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, “திருச்சட்ட நூலில் என்ன எழுதியிருக்கிறது? அதில் நீர் என்ன வாசிக்கிறீர்?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “ ‘உன் முழு இதயத்தோடும், முழு உள்ளத்தோடும், முழு ஆற்றலோடும், முழு மனத்தோடும் உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரிடம் அன்புகூர்வாயாக. உன்மீது நீ அன்புகூர்வதுபோல் உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர்மீதும் அன்பு கூர்வாயாக’ என்று எழுதியுள்ளது” என்றார். இயேசு, “சரியாய்ச் சொன்னீர்; அப்படியே செய்யும்; அப்பொழுது வாழ்வீர்” என்றார்.

அவர், தம்மை நேர்மையாளர் எனக் காட்ட விரும்பி, “எனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர் யார்?” என்று இயேசுவிடம் கேட்டார்.

அதற்கு அவர் மறுமொழியாகக் கூறிய உவமை: “ஒருவர் எருசலேமிலிருந்து எரிகோவுக்குப் போகும்போது கள்வர் கையில் அகப்பட்டார். அவருடைய ஆடைகளை அவர்கள் உரிந்துகொண்டு, அவரை அடித்துக் குற்றுயிராக விட்டுப் போனார்கள். குரு ஒருவர் தற்செயலாய் அவ்வழியே வந்தார். அவர் அவரைக் கண்டதும் மறுபக்கமாக விலகிச் சென்றார். அவ்வாறே லேவியர் ஒருவரும் அவ்விடத்துக்கு வந்து அவரைக் கண்டதும் மறுபக்கமாய் விலகிச் சென்றார்.

ஆனால் அவ்வழியே பயணம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்த சமாரியர் ஒருவர் அருகில் வந்து அவரைக் கண்டபோது அவர்மீது பரிவு கொண்டார். அவர் அவரை அணுகி, காயங்களில் திராட்சை மதுவும் எண்ணெயும் வார்த்து, அவற்றைக் கட்டி, தாம் பயணம் செய்த விலங்கின்மீது ஏற்றி, ஒரு சாவடிக்குக் கொண்டு போய் அவரைக் கவனித்துக்கொண்டார்.

மறுநாள் இரு தெனாரியத்தை எடுத்து, சாவடிப் பொறுப்பாளரிடம் கொடுத்து, ‘இவரைக் கவனித்துக்கொள்ளும்; இதற்கு மேல் செலவானால் நான் திரும்பி வரும்போது உமக்குத் தருவேன்” என்றார்.

“கள்வர் கையில் அகப்பட்டவருக்கு இம்மூவருள் எவர் அடுத்திருப்பவர் என உமக்குத் தோன்றுகிறது?” என்று இயேசு கேட்டார். அதற்குத் திருச்சட்ட அறிஞர், “அவருக்கு இரக்கம் காட்டியவரே” என்றார். இயேசு, “நீரும் போய் அப்படியே செய்யும்” என்று கூறினார்.

யோனாவோ ஆண்டவரிடமிருந்து தப்பியோட எண்ணித் தர்சீசுக்குப் புறப்பட்டார்.

இறைவாக்கினர் யோனா நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 1: 1-17

அமித்தாயின் மகன் யோனாவுக்கு ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு அருளப்பட்டது. அவர், “நீ புறப்பட்டு நினிவே மாநகருக்குப் போய், அதற்கு அழிவு வரப்போகிறது என்று அங்குள்ளோருக்கு அறிவி. அவர்கள் செய்யும் தீமைகள் என்முன்னே வந்து குவிகின்றன” என்றார்.

யோனாவோ ஆண்டவரிடமிருந்து தப்பியோட எண்ணித் தர்சீசுக்குப் புறப்பட்டார். அவர் யோப்பாவுக்குப் போய், அங்கே தர்சீசுக்குப் புறப்பட இருந்த ஒரு கப்பலைக் கண்டார்; உடனே கட்டணத்தைக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு, ஆண்டவர் திருமுன்னின்று தப்பியோட அந்தக் கப்பலில் ஏறி, அதில் இருந்தவர்களோடு தர்சீசுக்குப் பயணப்பட்டார்.

ஆனால் ஆண்டவர் கடலில் கடுங்காற்று வீசும்படி செய்தார். கடலில் பெரும் கொந்தளிப்பு உண்டாயிற்று; கப்பல் உடைந்துபோகும் நிலையில் இருந்தது. கப்பலில் இருந்தவர்கள் திகிலடைந்தார்கள். அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும் தம் தம் தெய்வத்தை நோக்கி மன்றாடலானார்கள். கப்பலின் பளுவைக் குறைப்பதற்காக அவர்கள் அதிலிருந்த சரக்குகளைக் கடலில் தூக்கியெறிந்தார்கள். யோனாவோ ஏற்கெனவே கப்பலின் அடித்தட்டுக்குப் போய்ப் படுத்து அயர்ந்து தூங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

கப்பல் தலைவன் அவரிடம் வந்து, “என்ன இது? இப்படித் தூங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாயே! எழுந்திரு. நீயும் உன் தெய்வத்தை நோக்கி வேண்டிக் கொள். ஒருவேளை அந்தத் தெய்வமாவது நம்மைக் காப்பாற்றலாம். நாம் அழிந்து போகாதிருப்போம்” என்றான்.

பிறகு கப்பலில் இருந்தவர்கள், “நமக்கு இந்தப் பெரும் தீங்கு யாரால் வந்தது என்று கண்டறியச் சீட்டுக் குலுக்குவோம்” என்று ஒருவரோடு ஒருவர் பேசிக் கொண்டார்கள். அவ்வாறே அவர்கள் சீட்டுக் குலுக்கிப் போட்டார்கள். சீட்டு யோனாவின் பெயருக்கு விழுந்தது. எனவே, அவர்கள் அவரை நோக்கி, “இப்பொழுது சொல். இந்தப் பெருந்தீங்கு யாரால் வந்தது? உன் வேலை என்ன? எங்கிருந்து வருகிறாய்? உன் நாடு எது? உன் இனம் எது?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “நான் ஓர் எபிரேயன். நீரையும் நிலத்தையும் படைத்த விண்ணகக் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரை வழிபடுபவன்” என்று சொன்னார். மேலும், தாம் அந்த ஆண்டவரிடமிருந்து தப்பியோடி வந்ததாகவும் கூறினார்.

எனவே அவர்கள் மிகவும் அஞ்சி, “நீ ஏன் இப்படிச் செய்தாய்?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். கடலில் கொந்தளிப்பு மேலும் கடுமையாகிக் கொண்டிருந்ததால் அவர்கள் யோனாவிடம், “கடல் கொந்தளிப்பு அடங்கும்படி நாங்கள் உன்னை என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்? “ என்று கேட்டார்கள். அதற்கு அவர், “நீங்கள் என்னைத் தூக்கிக் கடலில் எறிந்து விடுங்கள். அப்பொழுது கொந்தளிப்பு அடங்கிவிடும்; நீங்கள் பிழைத்துக் கொள்வீர்கள். உங்களைத் தாக்கும் இந்தக் கடும்புயல் என்னால்தான் உண்டாயிற்று என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும்” என்றார்.

ஆயினும் அவர்கள் கரைபோய்ச் சேர மிகுந்த வலிமையுடன் தண்டு வலித்தனர்; ஆனால் அவர்களால் இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் கடலின் கொந்தளிப்பு மேலும் மிகுதியாகிக் கொண்டேயிருந்தது. அவர்கள் அதைக் கண்டு ஆண்டவரை நோக்கிக் கதறி, “ஆண்டவரே, இந்த மனிதனுடைய உயிரின் பொருட்டு எங்களை அழியவிட வேண்டாம்; குற்றமில்லாத ஒருவனைச் சாகடித்ததாக எங்கள்மீது பழி சுமத்த வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில், ஆண்டவராகிய நீரே உமது திருவுளத்திற்கேற்ப இவ்வாறு செய்கிறீர்” என்று சொல்லி மன்றாடினார்கள்.

பிறகு அவர்கள் யோனாவைத் தூக்கிக் கடலில் எறிந்தார்கள்; கடல் கொந்தளிப்பும் தணிந்தது. அதைக் கண்டு அந்த மனிதர்கள் ஆண்டவருக்கு மிகவும் அஞ்சினார்கள். அவர்கள் ஆண்டவருக்குப் பலி செலுத்தினார்கள்; பொருத்தனைகளும் செய்து கொண்டார்கள்.

ஆண்டவர் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்தபடியே ஒரு பெரிய மீன் வந்து யோனாவை விழுங்கிற்று. யோனா மூன்று நாள் அல்லும் பகலும் அந்த மீன் வயிற்றில் இருந்தார்.

At that time,

    behold, a doctor of the Law stood up

and put Jesus to the test, saying,

“Master, what must I do

to inherit eternal life? "

    Jesus asked him,

" In the law, what has he written?

And how do you read? "

    The other replied:

'  Love the Lord your God

with all your heart, all your soul,

with all your strength and with all your mind,

and your neighbor as yourself.  "

    Jesus said to him:

" You answered correctly.

Do so and you will live. "

    But he, wanting to justify himself,

said to Jesus:

" And who is my neighbor? "

    Jesus spoke again:

“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,

and he found bandits;

these, after having stripped and beaten him,

left, leaving him half-dead.

    By chance, a priest came down this road;

he saw it and went to the other side.

    Likewise a Levite came to this place;

he saw it and went to the other side.

    But a Samaritan, who was on his way,

came near him;

he saw it and was seized with compassion.

    He approached and healed his wounds

by pouring oil and wine into them;

then he loaded him on his own mount,

drove him to an inn

and took care of him.

    The next day he took out two pieces of silver,

and gave them to the innkeeper, saying:

“Take care of him;

whatever you spend more,

I will give it back to you when I come back. ”

    Which of the three do you think was next

to the man who fell into the hands of the bandits? "

    The doctor of the Law answered,

" The one who showed mercy toward him. "

Jesus said,

"Jonah arose, but to flee from the presence of the Lord" 

Reading of the book of the prophet Jonah 1, 1 - 2, 1.11 

The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:

    “Arise, go to Nineveh, the great heathen city,

and proclaim that his wickedness has come up unto me. "

    Jonah arose, but to flee to Tarshish

from the presence of the Lord.

Descending in Jaffa, he found a ship bound for Tarshish.

He paid for his passage and embarked to go there,

far from the presence of the Lord.

    But the Lord sent a fierce wind upon the sea,

and a great storm arose,

so that the ship threatened to break up.

    The sailors were frightened;

each one cried out to his god

and, to lighten up, threw the cargo into the sea.

Now Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship,

he had gone to bed and was sleeping a mysterious sleep.

    The captain went to find him and said,

"What are you doing?" You sleep ?

Get up ! Call on your god.

Maybe this god will take care of us

to keep us from perishing. "

    And the sailors said to each other:

" Let us draw lots

to find out to whom we owe this misfortune. "

And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

    They asked him:

"Tell us, then, where does this misfortune come from?"

What is your profession ? Where do you come from ?

What is your country ? What people are you from? "

    Jonah answered them

“I am Hebrew,

I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,

who made the sea and the dry land. "

    The sailors were seized with great fear

and said to him:

" What have you done there? "

They knew, from what he told them,

he fled the face of the Lord.

    They asked him:

"What must we do with you,

so that the sea calms around us? "

For the sea was increasingly furious.

    He answered them:

"Take me, throw me into the sea,

that the sea may calm around you."

Because, I admit, it is because of me

that this great storm assails you. "

    The sailors rowed back ashore,

but could not do so,

for the sea was more and more angry around them.

    They then called on the Lord:

“Ah! Lord,

do not put us to death because of this man,

and do not hold us responsible for the death of an innocent person,

for you are the Lord:

what you wanted you did. "

    Then they took Jonah and threw him into the sea.

Then the fury of the sea fell.

    Men were seized with the fear of the Lord;

they offered him a sacrifice accompanied by vows.

    The Lord ordered a large fish

to swallow Jonah.

Jonah remained in the bowels of the fish

three days and three nights.

    Then the Lord spoke to the fish,

and the fish threw Jonah back to dry land.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தலைமைக் குருக்களையும் மக்களின் மூப்பர்களையும் நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “மேலும் ஓர் உவமையைக் கேளுங்கள்; நிலக்கிழார் ஒருவர் ஒரு திராட்சைத் தோட்டம் போட்டு, சுற்றிலும் வேலி அடைத்து, அதில் பிழிவுக் குழி வெட்டி, ஒரு காவல் மாடமும் கட்டினார்; பின்பு தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்களிடம் அதைக் குத்தகைக்கு விட்டுவிட்டு நெடும் பயணம் மேற்கொண்டார். பழம் பறிக்கும் காலம் நெருங்கி வந்தபோது அவர் தமக்குச் சேரவேண்டிய பழங்கiளைப் பெற்று வரும்படி தம் பணியாளர்களை அத்தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்களிடம் அனுப்பினார். தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்களோ அவருடைய பணியாளர்களைப் பிடித்து, ஒருவரை நையப் புடைத்தார்கள்; ஒருவரைக் கொலை செய்தார்கள்; ஒருவரைக் கல்லால் எறிந்தார்கள். மீண்டும் அவர் முதலில் அனுப்பியவர்களை விட மிகுதியான வேறு சில பணியாளர்களை அனுப்பினார். அவர்களுக்கும் அப்படியே அவர்கள் செய்தார்கள்.

தம் மகனை மதிப்பார்கள் என்று அவர் நினைத்துக்கொண்டு அவரை இறுதியாக அவர்களிடம் அனுப்பினார். அம்மகனைக் கண்டபோது தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்கள், ‘இவன்தான் சொத்துக்கு உரியவன்; வாருங்கள், நாம் இவனைக் கொன்றுபோடுவோம்; அப்போது இவன் சொத்து நமக்குக் கிடைக்கும்’ என்று தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். பின்பு அவர்கள் அவரைப் பிடித்து, திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்திற்கு வெளியே தள்ளிக் கொன்று போட்டார்கள்.

எனவே, திராட்சைத் தோட்ட உரிமையாளர் வரும்போது அத்தொழிலாளர்களை என்ன செய்வார்?” என இயேசு கேட்டார்.

அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “அத்தீயோரை ஈவிரக்கமின்றி ஒழித்து விடுவார்; உரிய காலத்தில் தமக்குச் சேரவேண்டிய பங்கைக் கொடுக்க முன்வரும் வேறு தோட்டத் தொழிலாளர்களுக்கு அத்திராட்சைத் தோட்டத்தைக் குத்தகைக்கு விடுவார்” என்றார்கள்.
