A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 11:1-4 

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’

  He said to them, ‘Say this when you pray:

‘“Father, may your name be held holy,

your kingdom come;

give us each day our daily bread,

and forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us.

And do not put us to the test.”’

Jonah is angry at God's mercy

A reading from the book of Jonah 4:1-11 

Jonah was very indignant; he fell into a rage. He prayed to the Lord and said, ‘Ah, Lord, is not this just as I said would happen when I was still at home? That was why I went and fled to Tarshish: I knew that you were a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in graciousness, relenting from evil. So now, Lord, please take away my life, for I might as well be dead as go on living.’ The Lord replied, ‘Are you right to be angry?’

  Jonah then went out of the city and sat down to the east of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city. Then the Lord God arranged that a castor-oil plant should grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head and soothe his ill-humour; Jonah was delighted with the castor-oil plant. But at dawn the next day, God arranged that a worm should attack the castor-oil plant – and it withered.

  Next, when the sun rose, God arranged that there should be a scorching east wind; the sun beat down so hard on Jonah’s head that he was overcome and begged for death, saying, ‘I might as well be dead as go on living.’ God said to Jonah, ‘Are you right to be angry about the castor-oil plant?’ He replied, ‘I have every right to be angry, to the point of death.’ The Lord replied, ‘You are only upset about a castor-oil plant which cost you no labour, which you did not make grow, which sprouted in a night and has perished in a night. And am I not to feel sorry for Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, to say nothing of all the animals?’

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களுடன் ஓர் ஊருக்குச் சென்றார். அங்கே பெண் ஒருவர் அவரைத் தம் வீட்டில் வரவேற்றார். அவர் பெயர் மார்த்தா. அவருக்கு மரியா என்னும் சகோதரி ஒருவர் இருந்தார். மரியா ஆண்டவருடைய காலடி அருகில் அமர்ந்து அவர் சொல்வதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.

ஆனால் மார்த்தா பற்பல பணிகள் புரிவதில் பரபரப்பாகி இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “ஆண்டவரே, நான் பணிவிடை செய்ய என் சகோதரி என்னைத் தனியே விட்டுவிட்டாளே, உமக்குக் கவலையில்லையா? எனக்கு உதவி புரியும்படி அவளிடம் சொல்லும்” என்றார்.

ஆண்டவர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “மார்த்தா, மார்த்தா! நீ பலவற்றைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்பட்டுக் கலங்குகிறாய். ஆனால் தேவையானது ஒன்றே. மரியாவோ நல்ல பங்கைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துக் கொண்டாள்; அது அவளிடமிருந்து எடுக்கப்படாது” என்றார்.

நினிவே மக்கள் தீய வழிகளினின்று விலகியதைக் கண்டு, ஆண்டவர் தம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக் கொண்டார்.

இறைவாக்கினர் யோனா நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 3: 1-10

இரண்டாம் முறையாக யோனாவுக்கு ஆண்டவரின் வாக்கு அருளப்பட்டது. அவர் “நீ புறப்பட்டு நினிவே மாநகருக்குப் போய், நான் உன்னிடம் சொல்லும் செய்தியை அங்குள்ளோருக்கு அறிவி” என்றார். அவ்வாறே யோனா புறப்பட்டு ஆண்டவரது கட்டளைப்படி நினிவேக்குச் சென்றார். நினிவே ஒரு மாபெரும் நகர். அதைக் கடக்க மூன்று நாள் ஆகும். யோனா நகருக்குள் சென்று, ஒரு நாள் முழுதும் நடந்தபின், உரத்த குரலில், “இன்னும் நாற்பது நாளில் நினிவே அழிக்கப்படும்” என்று அறிவித்தார்.

நினிவே நகர மக்கள் கடவுளின் செய்தியை நம்பி, எல்லாரும் நோன்பிருக்க முடிவு செய்தார்கள். பெரியோர் சிறியோர் அனைவரும் சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக் கொண்டனர்.

இந்தச் செய்தி நினிவே அரசனுக்கு எட்டியது. அவன் தன் அரியணையை விட்டிறங்கி, அரச உடையைக் களைந்துவிட்டு, சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக் கொண்டு, சாம்பல் மீது உட்கார்ந்தான். மேலும் அவன் ஓர் ஆணை பிறப்பித்து அதை நினிவே முழுதும் பறைசாற்றச் செய்தான். “இதனால் அரசரும் அரசவையினரும் மக்கள் அனைவருக்கும் அறிவிப்பதாவது: எந்த மனிதரும் உணவைச் சுவைத்துக்கூடப் பார்க்கக் கூடாது. ஆடு, மாடு முதலிய விலங்குகளும் தீனி தின்னவோ தண்ணீர் குடிக்கவோ கூடாது. மனிதரும் விலங்குகளும் சாக்கு உடை உடுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும். ஒவ்வொருவரும் கடவுளை நோக்கி மன்றாட வேண்டும்; தம் தீயவழிகளையும், தாம் செய்துவரும் கொடும் செயல்களையும் விட்டொழிக்க வேண்டும். இவ்வாறு செய்தால், கடவுள் ஒருவேளை தம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக் கொள்வார்; அவரது கடுஞ்சினமும் தணியும்; நமக்கு அழிவு வராது."

கடவுள் அவர்கள் செய்தது அனைத்தையும் பார்த்தார். அவர்கள் தீய வழிகளினின்று விலகியதை அவர் கண்டு, தம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக் கொண்டார்; தாம் அவர்கள்மீது அனுப்புவதாகச் சொல்லியிருந்த தண்டனையை அனுப்பவில்லை.

Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’

A reading from the book of Jonah 3:1-10 

The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: ‘Up!’ he said ‘Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.’ Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, ‘Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.’ And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. The news reached the king of Nineveh, who rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes. A proclamation was then promulgated throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his ministers, as follows: ‘Men and beasts, herds and flocks, are to taste nothing; they must not eat, they must not drink water. All are to put on sackcloth and call on God with all their might; and let everyone renounce his evil behaviour and the wicked things he has done. Who knows if God will not change his mind and relent, if he will not renounce his burning wrath, so that we do not perish?’ God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour, and God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.

அக்காலத்தில்

திருச்சட்ட அறிஞர் ஒருவர் எழுந்து இயேசுவைச் சோதிக்கும் நோக்குடன், “போதகரே, நிலைவாழ்வை உரிமையாக்கிக்கொள்ள நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, “திருச்சட்ட நூலில் என்ன எழுதியிருக்கிறது? அதில் நீர் என்ன வாசிக்கிறீர்?” என்று அவரிடம் கேட்டார். அவர் மறுமொழியாக, “ ‘உன் முழு இதயத்தோடும், முழு உள்ளத்தோடும், முழு ஆற்றலோடும், முழு மனத்தோடும் உன் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரிடம் அன்புகூர்வாயாக. உன்மீது நீ அன்புகூர்வதுபோல் உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர்மீதும் அன்பு கூர்வாயாக’ என்று எழுதியுள்ளது” என்றார். இயேசு, “சரியாய்ச் சொன்னீர்; அப்படியே செய்யும்; அப்பொழுது வாழ்வீர்” என்றார்.

அவர், தம்மை நேர்மையாளர் எனக் காட்ட விரும்பி, “எனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர் யார்?” என்று இயேசுவிடம் கேட்டார்.

அதற்கு அவர் மறுமொழியாகக் கூறிய உவமை: “ஒருவர் எருசலேமிலிருந்து எரிகோவுக்குப் போகும்போது கள்வர் கையில் அகப்பட்டார். அவருடைய ஆடைகளை அவர்கள் உரிந்துகொண்டு, அவரை அடித்துக் குற்றுயிராக விட்டுப் போனார்கள். குரு ஒருவர் தற்செயலாய் அவ்வழியே வந்தார். அவர் அவரைக் கண்டதும் மறுபக்கமாக விலகிச் சென்றார். அவ்வாறே லேவியர் ஒருவரும் அவ்விடத்துக்கு வந்து அவரைக் கண்டதும் மறுபக்கமாய் விலகிச் சென்றார்.

ஆனால் அவ்வழியே பயணம் செய்துகொண்டிருந்த சமாரியர் ஒருவர் அருகில் வந்து அவரைக் கண்டபோது அவர்மீது பரிவு கொண்டார். அவர் அவரை அணுகி, காயங்களில் திராட்சை மதுவும் எண்ணெயும் வார்த்து, அவற்றைக் கட்டி, தாம் பயணம் செய்த விலங்கின்மீது ஏற்றி, ஒரு சாவடிக்குக் கொண்டு போய் அவரைக் கவனித்துக்கொண்டார்.

மறுநாள் இரு தெனாரியத்தை எடுத்து, சாவடிப் பொறுப்பாளரிடம் கொடுத்து, ‘இவரைக் கவனித்துக்கொள்ளும்; இதற்கு மேல் செலவானால் நான் திரும்பி வரும்போது உமக்குத் தருவேன்” என்றார்.

“கள்வர் கையில் அகப்பட்டவருக்கு இம்மூவருள் எவர் அடுத்திருப்பவர் என உமக்குத் தோன்றுகிறது?” என்று இயேசு கேட்டார். அதற்குத் திருச்சட்ட அறிஞர், “அவருக்கு இரக்கம் காட்டியவரே” என்றார். இயேசு, “நீரும் போய் அப்படியே செய்யும்” என்று கூறினார்.
