A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 22:15-21 

The Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap Jesus in what he said. And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians, to say, ‘Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in an honest way, and that you are not afraid of anyone, because a man’s rank means nothing to you. Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’ But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, ‘You hypocrites! Why do you set this trap for me? Let me see the money you pay the tax with.’ They handed him a denarius, and he said, ‘Whose head is this? Whose name?’ ‘Caesar’s’ they replied. He then said to them, ‘Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.’

We constantly remember your faith, your love and your hope

A reading from the first letter of St.Paul to Thessalonians 1:1-5 

From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy, to the Church in Thessalonika which is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ; wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  We always mention you in our prayers and thank God for you all, and constantly remember before God our Father how you have shown your faith in action, worked for love and persevered through hope, in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  We know, brothers, that God loves you and that you have been chosen, because when we brought the Good News to you, it came to you not only as words, but as power and as the Holy Spirit and as utter conviction.

A reading from the book of Isaiah 45: 1,4-6 

Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,

whom he has taken by his right hand

to subdue nations before him

and strip the loins of kings,

to force gateways before him

that their gates be closed no more:

‘It is for the sake of my servant Jacob,

of Israel my chosen one,

that I have called you by your name,

conferring a title though you do not know me.

I am the Lord, unrivalled;

there is no other God besides me.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

உலகமே அவருக்கு உரிமைச் சொத்தாகும் என்னும் வாக்குறுதி ஆபிரகாமுக்கோ அவருடைய வழிமரபினர்களுக்கோ திருச்சட்டத்தைக் கடைப்பிடித்ததால் கிடைக்கவில்லை; நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர் ஆனதால்தான் அவ்வாக்குறுதி கிடைத்தது. ஆகவே கடவுளின் அருள்செயலால் நம்பிக்கை வாக்குறுதியின் அடிப்படையாயிற்று. இவ்வாறு வாக்குறுதி ஆபிரகாமின் வழிவந்தவர்கள் எல்லாருக்கும் - திருச்சட்டத்திற்கு உட்பட்டோருக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, அவரைப் போலக் கடவுள்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டோருக்கும் - உரியது என்பது உறுதியாயிற்று. ஆபிரகாம் நம் அனைவருக்கும் தந்தை. ஏனெனில் “எண்ணற்ற மக்களினங்களுக்கு உம்மை நான் தந்தையாக்குகிறேன்” என்று மறைநூலில் எழுதியுள்ளது. ஆம், இறந்தவர்களை வாழ்விப்பவரும் இல்லாததைத் தம் வார்த்தையால் இருக்கச் செய்பவருமாகிய கடவுள்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு அவர் முன்னிலையில் ஆபிரகாம் நம் தந்தையானார்.

“உன் வழிமரபினர் எண்ணற்றவராய் இருப்பர்” என்றும் அவருக்குச் சொல்லப்பட்டது. இக்கூற்று நிறைவேறும் என்னும் எதிர்நோக்குக்கு இடம் இல்லாததுபோல் தோன்றினும், அவர் எதிர்நோக்கினார்; தயங்காமல் நம்பினார். ஆகவே அவர் பல மக்களினங்களுக்குத் தந்தையானார்.

Jesus said to his disciples:

  ‘I tell you, if anyone openly declares himself for me in the presence of men, the Son of Man will declare himself for him in the presence of the angels. But the man who disowns me in the presence of men will be disowned in the presence of God’s angels.

  ‘Everyone who says a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

  ‘When they take you before synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how to defend yourselves or what to say, because when the time comes, the Holy Spirit will teach you what you must say.’

Abraham hoped and believed and became the father of many nations

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 4:13,16-18 

The promise of inheriting the world was not made to Abraham and his descendants on account of any law but on account of the righteousness which consists in faith. That is why what fulfils the promise depends on faith, so that it may be a free gift and be available to all of Abraham’s descendants, not only those who belong to the Law but also those who belong to the faith of Abraham who is the father of all of us. As scripture says: I have made you the ancestor of many nations – Abraham is our father in the eyes of God, in whom he put his faith, and who brings the dead to life and calls into being what does not exist.

  Though it seemed Abraham’s hope could not be fulfilled, he hoped and he believed, and through doing so he did become the father of many nations exactly as he had been promised: Your descendants will be as many as the stars.
