வெளிவேடமற்ற உன் நம்பிக்கையை நினைத்துப் பார்க்கிறேன்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் திமொத்தேயுவுக்கு எழுதிய இரண்டாம் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 1: 1-8

என் அன்பார்ந்த பிள்ளை திமொத்தேயுவுக்கு, கடவுளின் திருவுளத்தால் கிறிஸ்து இயேசு அருளும் வாழ்வு பற்றிய வாக்குறுதிக்கு ஏற்ப அவருடைய திருத்தூதனான பவுல் எழுதுவது:

தந்தையாம் கடவுளிடமிருந்தும் நம் ஆண்டவராம் கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவிடமிருந்தும் அருளும் இரக்கமும் அமைதியும் உரித்தாகுக! என் முன்னோரைப் போன்று தூய்மையான மனச்சான்றுடன் கடவுளுக்குப் பணியாற்றும் நான் அவருக்கு நன்றி கூறுகிறேன். இரவும் பகலும் இடைவிடாமல் என் மன்றாட்டுகளில் உன்னை நினைவு கூருகின்றேன். உன் கண்ணீரை நினைவிற்கொண்டு உன்னைக் காண ஏங்குகின்றேன்; கண்டால் என் மகிழ்ச்சி நிறைவடையும். வெளிவேடமற்ற உன் நம்பிக்கையை நினைத்துப் பார்க்கிறேன். இத்தகைய நம்பிக்கை முதலில் உன் பாட்டி லோயி மற்றும் உன் தாய் யூனிக்கி ஆகியோரிடம் விளங்கியது. இப்போது உன்னிடமும் உள்ளதென உறுதியாக நம்புகிறேன்.

உன்மீது என் கைகளை வைத்துத் திருப்பணியில் அமர்த்தியபோது உனக்குள் எழுந்த கடவுளின் அருள்கொடையினைத் தூண்டி எழுப்புமாறு நினைவுறுத்துகிறேன். கடவுள் நமக்குக் கோழை உள்ளத்தினை அல்ல, வல்லமையும் அன்பும் கட்டுப்பாடும் கொண்ட உள்ளத்தையே வழங்கியுள்ளார்.

எனவே நம் ஆண்டவருக்கு நீ சான்று பகர்வதைக் குறித்தோ அவர் பொருட்டு நான் கைதியாக இருப்பதைக் குறித்தோ வெட்கமடையத் தேவை இல்லை; கடவுளின் வல்லமைக்கேற்ப நற்செய்தியின் பொருட்டுத் துன்பத்தில் என்னுடன் பங்குகொள்.

The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, “Peace to this house!” And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, “The kingdom of God is very near to you.”’

Fan into a flame the gift God gave you

A reading from the Second letter of St.Paul to Timothy 1:1-8 

From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus in his design to promise life in Christ Jesus; to Timothy, dear child of mine, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

  Night and day I thank God, keeping my conscience clear and remembering my duty to him as my ancestors did, and always I remember you in my prayers; I remember your tears and long to see you again to complete my happiness. Then I am reminded of the sincere faith which you have; it came first to live in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and I have no doubt that it is the same faith in you as well.

  That is why I am reminding you now to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I laid my hands on you. God’s gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love, and self-control. So you are never to be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord, or ashamed of me for being his prisoner; but with me, bear the hardships for the sake of the Good News, relying on the power of God who has saved us and called us to be holy.

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுல் மக்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “நான் ஒரு யூதன்; சிலிசியாவிலுள்ள தர்சு நகரத்தில் பிறந்தவன்; ஆனால் இந்த எருசலேம் நகரில் வளர்க்கப்பட்டவன்; கமாலியேலின் காலடியில் அமர்ந்து நம் தந்தையரின் திருச்சட்டங்களில் நுட்பமாகப் பயிற்சி பெற்றவன்; நீங்கள் அனைவரும் இன்று கடவுள்மீது ஆர்வம் கொண்டுள்ளதுபோன்று நானும் கொண்டிருந்தேன். கிறிஸ்தவ நெறியைச் சேர்ந்த ஆண்களையும் பெண்களையும் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்தேன்; சாகும்வரை அவர்களைத் துன்புறுத்தினேன். தலைமைக் குருவும் மூப்பர் சங்கத்தாரும் இதற்குச் சாட்சி. இவர்களிடமிருந்து தமஸ்கு நகரிலுள்ள சகோதரர்களுக்குக் கடிதங்களைப் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு அங்குள்ள கிறிஸ்தவர்களைக் கட்டி எருசலேமுக்குக் கொண்டுவந்து தண்டிப்பதற்காக அங்குச் சென்றேன்.

நான் புறப்பட்டுத் தமஸ்கு நகரை நெருங்கியபோது நண்பகல் நேரத்தில் திடீரென வானிலிருந்து ஒரு பேரொளி என்னைச் சூழ்ந்து வீசியது. நான் தரையில் விழுந்தேன். அப்போது, ‘சவுலே, சவுலே நீ ஏன் என்னைத் துன்புறுத்துகிறாய்?’ என்ற குரலைக் கேட்டேன். அப்போது நான், ‘ஆண்டவரே நீர் யார்?’ என்று கேட்டேன். அவர், ‘நீ துன்புறுத்தும் நாசரேத்து இயேசு நானே’ என்றார்.

என்னோடு இருந்தவர்கள் ஒளியைக் கண்டார்கள்; ஆனால் என்னோடு பேசியவரது குரலைக் கேட்கவில்லை.

‘ஆண்டவரே, நான் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?’ என நான் கேட்க, ஆண்டவர் என்னை நோக்கி, ‘நீ எழுந்து தமஸ்குவுக்குச் செல். நீ செய்வதற்கெனக் குறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளவை அனைத்தும் அங்கே உனக்குக் கூறப்படும்’ என்றார்.

அந்த ஒளியின் மிகுதியால் நான் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை. என்னோடு இருந்தவர்கள் எனது கையைப் பிடித்துத் தமஸ்குவினுள் அழைத்துச் சென்றார்கள்.

அங்கு அனனியா என்னும் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் திருச்சட்டத்தைக் கடைப்பிடித்துக் கடவுளுக்கு அஞ்சி வாழ்ந்தவர்; அங்கு வாழ்ந்து வந்த யூதர் அனைவரிடமும் நற்சான்று பெற்றவர். அவர் என்னிடம் வந்து அருகில் நின்று, ‘சகோதரர் சவுலே, மீண்டும் பார்வையடையும்’ என்றார். அந்நேரமே நான் பார்வை பெற்று அவரைப் பார்த்தேன்.

அப்போது அவர், ‘நம் மூதாதையரின் கடவுள் தம் திருவுளத்தை அறியவும் தம் நேர்மையாளரைக் காணவும் தம் வாய்மொழியைக் கேட்கவும் உம்மை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளார். ஏனெனில், நீர் கண்டவைகளுக்கும் கேட்டவைகளுக்கும் அனைவர் முன்பும் நீர் சாட்சியாய் இருக்க வேண்டும். இனி ஏன் காலம் தாழ்த்த வேண்டும்? எழுந்து அவரது திருப்பெயரை அறிக்கையிட்டு உமது பாவங்களிலிருந்து கழுவப்பெற்றுத் திருமுழுக்குப் பெறும்’ என்றார்.”

'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?'

A reading from the Acts of Apostles 22: 3-16 

Paul said to the people, ‘I am a Jew and was born at Tarsus in Cilicia. I was brought up here in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was taught the exact observance of the Law of our ancestors. In fact, I was as full of duty towards God as you are today. I even persecuted this Way to the death, and sent women as well as men to prison in chains as the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify, since they even sent me with letters to their brothers in Damascus. When I set off it was with the intention of bringing prisoners back from there to Jerusalem for punishment.

  ‘I was on that journey and nearly at Damascus when about midday a bright light from heaven suddenly shone round me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” I answered: Who are you, Lord? and he said to me, “I am Jesus the Nazarene, and you are persecuting me.” The people with me saw the light but did not hear his voice as he spoke to me. I said: What am I to do, Lord? The Lord answered, “Stand up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told what you have been appointed to do.” The light had been so dazzling that I was blind and my companions had to take me by the hand; and so I came to Damascus.

  ‘Someone called Ananias, a devout follower of the Law and highly thought of by all the Jews living there, came to see me; he stood beside me and said, “Brother Saul, receive your sight.” Instantly my sight came back and I was able to see him. Then he said, “The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will, to see the Just One and hear his own voice speaking, because you are to be his witness before all mankind, testifying to what you have seen and heard. And now why delay? It is time you were baptised and had your sins washed away while invoking his name.”’
