A reading from the book of Leviticus 19: 1-2,11-18 

The Lord spoke to Moses; he said: ‘Speak to the whole community of the sons of Israel and say to them:

  ‘“Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.

  ‘“You must not steal nor deal deceitfully or fraudulently with your neighbour. You must not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God. I am the Lord. You must not exploit or rob your neighbour. You must not keep back the labourer’s wage until next morning. You must not curse the dumb, nor put an obstacle in the blind man’s way, but you must fear your God. I am the Lord.

  ‘“You must not be guilty of unjust verdicts. You must neither be partial to the little man nor overawed by the great; you must pass judgement on your neighbour according to justice. You must not slander your own people, and you must not jeopardise your neighbour’s life. I am the Lord. You must not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. You must openly tell him, your neighbour, of his offence; this way you will not take a sin upon yourself. You must not exact vengeance, nor must you bear a grudge against the children of your people. You must love your neighbour as yourself. I am the Lord.”’

அக்காலத்தில்

தூய ஆவியால் இயேசு பாலைநிலத்துக்கு அனுப்பிவைக்கப்பட்டார். பாலைநிலத்தில் அவர் நாற்பது நாள் இருந்தார்; அப்போது சாத்தானால் சோதிக்கப்பட்டார்; அங்குக் காட்டு விலங்குகளிடையே இருந்தார். வானதூதர் அவருக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்தனர்.

யோவான் கைதுசெய்யப்பட்டபின், கடவுளின் நற்செய்தியைப் பறைசாற்றிக்கொண்டே இயேசு கலிலேயாவிற்கு வந்தார். “காலம் நிறைவேறிவிட்டது. இறையாட்சி நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது; மனம் மாறி நற்செய்தியை நம்புங்கள்” என்று அவர் கூறினார்.

அன்பிற்குரியவர்களே,

கிறிஸ்துவும் உங்கள் பாவங்களின் பொருட்டு ஒரே முறையாக இறந்தார். அவர் உங்களைக் கடவுளிடம் கொண்டு சேர்க்கவே இறந்தார். நீதியுள்ளவராகிய அவர் நீதியற்றவர்களுக்காக இறந்தார். மனித இயல்போடிருந்த அவர் இறந்தாரெனினும் ஆவிக்குரிய இயல்புடையவராய் உயிர் பெற்றெழுந்தார். அந்நிலையில் அவர் காவலில் இருந்த ஆவிகளிடம் போய்த் தம் செய்தியை அறிவித்தார். நோவா பேழையைச் செய்துகொண்டிருந்த நாள்களில், பொறுமையோடு காத்துக்கொண்டிருந்த கடவுளை அந்த ஆவிகள் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை. சிலர், அதாவது எட்டுப் பேர் மட்டும் அந்தப் பேழையில், தண்ணீர் வழியாகக் காப்பாற்றப்பட்டனர்.

அந்தத் தண்ணீரானது திருமுழுக்கிற்கு முன்னடையாளம். இத்திருமுழுக்கு உடலின் அழுக்கைப் போக்கும் செயல் அல்ல; அது குற்றமற்ற மனச்சான்றுடன் கடவுளுக்குத் தரும் வாக்குறுதியாகும்; இது இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் உயிர்த்தெழுதல் வழியாக இப்போது உங்களுக்கு மீட்பு அளிக்கிறது. அவர் வானதூதர்களையும் அதிகாரங்களையும் வல்லமைகளையும் தமக்குப் பணிய வைத்து, விண்ணுலகம் சென்று, கடவுளின் வலப்பக்கத்தில் இருக்கிறார்.

Jesus was tempted by Satan, and the angels looked after him

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 1:12-15 

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the wilderness and he remained there for forty days, and was tempted by Satan. He was with the wild beasts, and the angels looked after him.

  After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. ‘The time has come’ he said ‘and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.’

The water on which the Ark floated is a type of the baptism which saves you now

1 Peter 3:18-22

Christ himself, innocent though he was, died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life, and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison. Now it was long ago, when Noah was still building that ark which saved only a small group of eight people ‘by water’, and when God was still waiting patiently, that these spirits refused to believe. That water is a type of the baptism which saves you now, and which is not the washing off of physical dirt but a pledge made to God from a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has entered heaven and is at God’s right hand, now that he has made the angels and Dominations and Powers his subjects.

A reading from the book of Genesis 9: 8-15

God spoke to Noah and his sons, ‘See, I establish my Covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; also with every living creature to be found with you, birds, cattle and every wild beast with you: everything that came out of the ark, everything that lives on the earth. I establish my Covenant with you: no thing of flesh shall be swept away again by the waters of the flood. There shall be no flood to destroy the earth again.’

  God said, ‘Here is the sign of the Covenant I make between myself and you and every living creature with you for all generations: I set my bow in the clouds and it shall be a sign of the Covenant between me and the earth. When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the Covenant between myself and you and every living creature of every kind. And so the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all things of flesh.’
