Jesus began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because they refused to repent.

  ‘Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard on Judgement day with Tyre and Sidon as with you. And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be exalted as high as heaven? You shall be thrown down to hell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard with the land of Sodom on Judgement day as with you.’

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah 7: 1-9 

In the reign of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Razon the king of Aram went up against Jerusalem with Pekah son of Remaliah, king of Israel, to lay siege to it; but he was unable to capture it.

  The news was brought to the House of David. ‘Aram’ they said ‘has reached Ephraim.’ Then the heart of the king and the hearts of the people shuddered as the trees of the forest shudder in front of the wind. The Lord said to Isaiah, ‘Go with your son Shear-jashub, and meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the Fuller’s Field road, and say to him:

‘“Pay attention, keep calm, have no fear,

do not let your heart sink

because of these two smouldering stumps of firebrands,

or because Aram, Ephraim and the son of Remaliah

have plotted to ruin you, and have said:

Let us invade Judah and terrorise it

and seize it for ourselves,

and set up a king there,

the son of Tabeel.

The Lord says this:

It shall not come true; it shall not be.

The capital of Aram is Damascus,

the head of Damascus, Razon;

the capital of Ephraim, Samaria,

the head of Samaria, the son of Remaliah.

Six or five years more

and a shattered Ephraim shall no longer be a people.

But if you do not stand by me,

you will not stand at all.”’

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களை நோக்கிக் கூறியது: “நான் உலகிற்கு அமைதி கொணர வந்தேன் என எண்ண வேண்டாம். அமைதியை அல்ல, வாளையே கொணர வந்தேன். தந்தைக்கு எதிராக மகனையும் தாய்க்கு எதிராக மகளையும் மாமியாருக்கு எதிராக மருமகளையும் நான் பிரிக்க வந்தேன். ஒருவருடைய பகைவர் அவரது வீட்டில் உள்ளவரே ஆவர்.

உங்களை ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவர் என்னை ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறார். என்னை ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவரோ என்னை அனுப்பினவரையே ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறார். இறைவாக்கினர் ஒருவரை அவர் இறைவாக்கினர் என்பதால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவர் இறைவாக்கினருக்குரிய கைம்மாறு பெறுவார். நேர்மையாளர் ஒருவரை அவர் நேர்மையாளர் என்பதால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவர் நேர்மையாளருக்குரிய கைம்மாறு பெறுவார்.

இச்சிறியோருள் ஒருவருக்கு அவர் என் சீடர் என்பதால் ஒரு கிண்ணம் குளிர்ந்த நீராவது கொடுப்பவரும் தம் கைம்மாறு பெறாமல் போகார் என உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்."

இயேசு தம் பன்னிரு சீடருக்கும் அறிவுரை கொடுத்து முடித்ததும் பக்கத்து ஊர்களில் கற்பிக்கவும் நற்செய்தியை அறிவிக்கவும் அவ்விடம் விட்டு அகன்றார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 10: 34-11:1 

Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: ‘Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man’s enemies will be those of his own household.

  ‘Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.

  ‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me.

  ‘Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet’s reward; and anyone who welcomes a holy man will have a holy man’s reward.

  ‘If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.’

  When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples he moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.

Hear the word of the Lord,

you rulers of Sodom;

listen to the command of our God,

you people of Gomorrah.

‘What are your endless sacrifices to me?

says the Lord.

I am sick of holocausts of rams

and the fat of calves.

The blood of bulls and of goats revolts me.

When you come to present yourselves before me,

who asked you to trample over my courts?

Bring me your worthless offerings no more,

the smoke of them fills me with disgust.

New Moons, sabbaths, assemblies –

I cannot endure festival and solemnity.

Your New Moons and your pilgrimages

I hate with all my soul.

They lie heavy on me,

I am tired of bearing them.

உலகம் தோன்றுவதற்கு முன்பே கடவுள் நம்மைக் கிறிஸ்து வழியாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் எபேசியருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 1: 3-14

நம் ஆண்டவராகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் தந்தையும் கடவுளுமானவர் போற்றி! அவர் விண்ணகம் சார்ந்த, ஆவிக்குரிய ஆசி அனைத்தையும் கிறிஸ்து வழியாக நம்மீது பொழிந்துள்ளார். நாம் தூயோராகவும், மாசற்றோராகவும் தம் திருமுன் விளங்கும்படி, உலகம் தோன்றுவதற்கு முன்பே கடவுள் நம்மைக் கிறிஸ்து வழியாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார். அவர் நம்மை இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் மூலம் தமக்குச் சொந்தமான பிள்ளைகளாக்கிக்கொள்ள அன்பினால் முன்குறித்து வைத்தார்.

இதுவே அவரது விருப்பம்; இதுவே அவரது திருவுளம். இவ்வாறு தம் அன்பார்ந்த மகன் வழியாக நம்மீது ஒப்புயர்வற்ற அருளைப் பொழிந் தருளியதால் அவரது புகழைப் பாடுகிறோம். கிறிஸ்து இரத்தம் சிந்தி தம் அருள்வளத்திற்கு ஏற்ப நமக்கு மீட்பு அளித்துள்ளார்; இம்மீட்பால் குற்றங்களிலிருந்து நாம் மன்னிப்புப் பெறுகிறோம். அந்த அருளை அவர் நம்மில் பெருகச் செய்து, அனைத்து ஞானத்தையும் அறிவுத் திறனையும் தந்துள்ளார். அவர் தமது திருவுளத்தின் மறைபொருளை நமக்குத் தெரியப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். இது கிறிஸ்து வழியாகக் கடவுள் விரும்பிச் செய்த தீர்மானம். கால நிறைவில் விண்ணிலுள்ளவை, மண்ணிலுள்ளவை அனைத்தையுமே கிறிஸ்துவின் தலைமையில் ஒன்று சேர்க்கவேண்டும் என்ற திட்டமே அம்மறைபொருள்.

கடவுள் தமது திருவுளத்தின் திட்டத்தின்படி அனைத்தையும் செயல்படுத்தி வருகிறார். அவரது தீர்மானத்தால் நாம் முன்குறிக்கப்பட்டு, கிறிஸ்து வழியாய் அவரது உரிமைப் பேற்றுக்கு உரியவரானோம். இவ்வாறு கிறிஸ்துவின் மேல் முதலில் நம்பிக்கை வைத்த நாங்கள் கடவுளுடைய மாட்சியைப் புகழ்ந்துபாட வேண்டுமென அவர் விரும்பினார். நீங்களும், உங்களுக்கு மீட்பளிக்கும் நற்செய்தியாகிய உண்மையின் வார்த்தையைக் கேட்டு, அவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு, வாக்களிக்கப்பட்ட தூய ஆவியால் அவருக்குள் முத்திரையிடப்பட்டீர்கள். அந்தத் தூய ஆவியே நாம் மீட்படைந்து உரிமைப்பேறு பெறுவோம் என்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்தும் அடையாளமாக இருக்கிறது. இவ்வாறு கடவுளது மாட்சியின் புகழ் விளங்கும்.
