A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 18:33-37 

‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Pilate asked. Jesus replied, ‘Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others spoken to you about me?’ Pilate answered, ‘Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?’ Jesus replied, ‘Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this kind.’ ‘So you are a king then?’ said Pilate. ‘It is you who say it’ answered Jesus. ‘Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.’

Jesus Christ has made us a line of kings and priests.

A reading from the book of the Apocalypse 1:5-8 

Grace and peace to you from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the First-Born from the dead, the Ruler of the kings of the earth. He loves us and has washed away our sins with his blood, and made us a line of kings, priests to serve his God and Father; to him, then, be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen. It is he who is coming on the clouds; everyone will see him, even those who pierced him, and all the races of the earth will mourn over him. This is the truth. Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’ says the Lord God, who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.

A Reading from the Book of Daniel 7:13-14 

I gazed into the visions of the night.

And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven,

one like a son of man.

He came to the one of great age

and was led into his presence.

On him was conferred sovereignty,

glory and kingship,

and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants.

His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty

which shall never pass away,

nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

அக்காலத்தில்

உயிர்த்தெழுதலை மறுக்கும் சில சதுசேயர் இயேசுவை அணுகி, “போதகரே, மணமான ஒருவர் மகப்பேறின்றி இறந்துபோனால் அவர் மனைவியைக் கொழுந்தனே மனைவியாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு தம் சகோதரருக்கு வழிமரபு உருவாக்க வேண்டும் என்று மோசே எழுதிவைத்துள்ளார். இங்குச் சகோதரர் எழுவர் இருந்தனர். மூத்தவர் ஒரு பெண்ணை மணந்து மகப்பேறின்றி இறந்தார். இரண்டாம், மூன்றாம் சகோதரர்களும் அவரை மணந்தனர். இவ்வாறே எழுவரும் மகப்பேறின்றி இறந்தனர்; கடைசியாக அப்பெண்ணும் இறந்தார். அப்படியானால் உயிர்த்தெழும்போது அவர் அவர்களுள் யாருக்கு மனைவி ஆவார்? ஏனெனில் எழுவரும் அவரை மனைவியாகக் கொண்டிருந்தனரே?” என்று கேட்டனர்.

அதற்கு இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “இக்கால வாழ்வில் மக்கள் திருமணம் செய்து கொள்கின்றனர். ஆனால் வருங்கால வாழ்வைப் பெறத் தகுதி பெற்ற யாரும் இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழும்போது திருமணம் செய்து கொள்வதில்லை. இனி அவர்கள் சாகமுடியாது; அவர்கள் வானதூதரைப் போல் இருப்பார்கள். உயிர்த்தெழுந்த மக்களாய் இருப்பதால் அவர்கள் கடவுளின் மக்களே.

இறந்தோர் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படுவதைப் பற்றி மோசே முட்புதர் பற்றிய பகுதியில் எடுத்துக் கூறியிருக்கிறாரே, அங்கு அவர் ஆண்டவரை, ‘ஆபிரகாமின் கடவுள், ஈசாக்கின் கடவுள், யாக்கோபின் கடவுள்’ என்று கூறியிருக்கிறார். அவர் இறந்தோரின் கடவுள் அல்ல; மாறாக வாழ்வோரின் கடவுள். ஏனெனில் அவரைப் பொறுத்தமட்டில் அனைவரும் உயிருள்ளவர்களே” என்றார்.

மறைநூல் அறிஞருள் சிலர் அவரைப் பார்த்து, “போதகரே, நன்றாகச் சொன்னீர்” என்றனர். அதன்பின் அவர்கள் அவரிடம் எதையும் கேட்கத் துணியவில்லை.

திருத்தூதர் யோவான் எழுதிய திருவெளிப்பாட்டிலிருந்து வாசகம் 11: 4-12

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

மண்ணுலகின் ஆண்டவர் திருமுன் நிற்கும் இரண்டு ஒலிவ மரங்களும் இரண்டு விளக்குத் தண்டுகளுமே அந்த இரு சாட்சிகள். யாராவது அவர்களுக்குத் தீங்கு இழைக்க விரும்பினால் அவர்களது வாயிலிருந்து தீ கிளம்பி அந்தப் பகைவர்களைச் சுட்டெரித்துவிடும். அவர்களுக்குத் தீங்கு இழைக்க விரும்புவோர் இவ்வாறு கொல்லப்படுவது உறுதி. தாங்கள் இறைவாக்கு உரைக்கும் காலத்தில் மழை பொழியாதவாறு வானத்தை அடைத்துவிட அவர்களுக்கு அதிகாரம் உண்டு; தாங்கள் விரும்பும் பொழுதெல்லாம் தண்ணீரை இரத்தமாக மாற்றவும், மண்ணுலகை எல்லா வகை வாதைகளாலும் தாக்கவும் அவர்களுக்கு அதிகாரம் உண்டு.

அவர்கள் சான்று பகர்ந்து முடித்தபின் படுகுழியிலிருந்து வெளியே வரும் விலங்கு அவர்களோடு போர் தொடுத்து, அவர்களை வென்று கொன்றுவிடும். சோதோம் எனவும் எகிப்து எனவும் உருவகமாய் அழைக்கப்படும் அம்மாநகரின் தெருக்களில் அவர்களுடைய பிணங்கள் கிடக்கும். அங்கேதான் அவர்களின் ஆண்டவர் சிலுவையில் அறையப்பட்டார். பல்வேறு மக்களினத்தார், குலத்தினர், மொழியினர், நாட்டினர் மூன்றரை நாள் அவர்களுடைய பிணங்கள் அங்குக் கிடக்கக் காண்பார்கள்; அவற்றை அடக்கம் செய்ய விடமாட்டார்கள். மண்ணுலகில் வாழ்வோர் அவற்றைக் குறித்து மிகவே மகிழ்ந்து திளைப்பர்; ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் அன்பளிப்புகள் வழங்கிக்கொள்வர்; ஏனெனில் இந்த இரண்டு இறைவாக்கினரும் மண்ணுலகில் வாழ்வோர்க்குத் தொல்லை கொடுத்திருந்தனர்.

அந்த மூன்றரை நாளுக்குப் பின் கடவுளிடமிருந்து வந்த உயிர்மூச்சு அவற்றுக்குள் நுழைந்ததும், அவர்கள் எழுந்து நின்றார்கள். அதைப் பார்த்தவர்களைப் பேரச்சம் ஆட்கொண்டது. அப்பொழுது விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து எழுந்த ஓர் உரத்த குரல், “இவ்விடத்திற்கு ஏறி வாருங்கள்” என்று தங்களுக்குச் சொன்னதை அந்த இறைவாக்கினர்கள் இருவரும் கேட்டார்கள். அவர்களுடைய பகைவர்கள் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்க அவர்கள் மேகத்தின்மீது விண்ணகத்துக்குச் சென்றார்கள்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 20: 27-40 

Some Sadducees – those who say that there is no resurrection – approached Jesus and they put this question to him, ‘Master, we have it from Moses in writing, that if a man’s married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother. Well then, there were seven brothers. The first, having married a wife, died childless. The second and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children. Finally the woman herself died. Now, at the resurrection, to which of them will she be wife since she had been married to all seven?’

  Jesus replied, ‘The children of this world take wives and husbands, but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are sons of God. And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all men are in fact alive.’

  Some scribes then spoke up. ‘Well put, Master’ they said – because they would not dare to ask him any more questions.

I, John, heard a voice saying: ‘These, my two witnesses, are the two olive trees and the two lamps that stand before the Lord of the world. Fire can come from their mouths and consume their enemies if anyone tries to harm them; and if anybody does try to harm them he will certainly be killed in this way. They are able to lock up the sky so that it does not rain as long as they are prophesying; they are able to turn water into blood and strike the whole world with any plague as often as they like. When they have completed their witnessing, the beast that comes out of the Abyss is going to make war on them and overcome them and kill them. Their corpses will lie in the main street of the Great City known by the symbolic names Sodom and Egypt, in which their Lord was crucified. Men out of every people, race, language and nation will stare at their corpses, for three-and-a-half days, not letting them be buried, and the people of the world will be glad about it and celebrate the event by giving presents to each other, because these two prophets have been a plague to the people of the world.’

  After the three-and-a-half days, God breathed life into them and they stood up, and everybody who saw it happen was terrified; then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to them, ‘Come up here’, and while their enemies were watching, they went up to heaven in a cloud.
