'In the town of David a saviour has been born to you'

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 2:1-14 

Caesar Augustus issued a decree for a census of the whole world to be taken. This census – the first – took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria, and everyone went to his own town to be registered. So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee and travelled up to Judaea, to the town of David called Bethlehem, since he was of David’s House and line, in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to a son, her first born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them at the inn.

  In the countryside close by there were shepherds who lived in the fields and took it in turns to watch their flocks during the night. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified, but the angel said, ‘Do not be afraid. Listen, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people. Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. And here is a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly with the angel there was a great throng of the heavenly host, praising God and singing:

‘Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and peace to men who enjoy his favour.’

God's grace has been revealed to the whole human race

A reading from the letter of St.Paul to Titus 2:11-14 

God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race and taught us that what we have to do is to give up everything that does not lead to God, and all our worldly ambitions; we must be self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in this present world, while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come with the Appearing of the glory of our great God and saviour Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set us free from all wickedness and to purify a people so that it could be his very own and would have no ambition except to do good.

A Son is given to us

A reading from the book of Isaiah 9:1-7 

The people that walked in darkness

has seen a great light;

on those who live in a land of deep shadow

a light has shone.

You have made their gladness greater,

you have made their joy increase;

they rejoice in your presence

as men rejoice at harvest time,

as men are happy when they are dividing the spoils.

For the yoke that was weighing on him,

the bar across his shoulders,

the rod of his oppressor,

these you break as on the day of Midian.

For all the footgear of battle,

every cloak rolled in blood,

is burnt,

and consumed by fire.

For there is a child born for us,

a son given to us

and dominion is laid on his shoulders;

and this is the name they give him:

Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God,

Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.

Wide is his dominion

in a peace that has no end,

for the throne of David

and for his royal power,

which he establishes and makes secure

in justice and integrity.

From this time onwards and for ever,

திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தந்தை செக்கரியா தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு உரைத்த இறைவாக்கு: “இஸ்ரயேலின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரைப் போற்றுவோம். ஏனெனில் அவர் தம் மக்களைத் தேடிவந்து விடுவித்தருளினார். தம் தூய இறைவாக்கினர் வாயினால் தொடக்க முதல் அவர் மொழிந்தபடியே அவர் தம் ஊழியராகிய தாவீதின் குடும்பத்தில் வல்லமை உடைய மீட்பர் ஒருவர் நமக்காகத் தோன்றச் செய்தார்; நம் பகைவரிடமிருந்தும் நம்மை வெறுப்போர் அனைவரின் பிடியிலிருந்தும் நம்மை மீட்பார். அவர் நம் மூதாதையருக்கு இரக்கம் காட்டி, தமது தூய உடன்படிக்கையையும், நம் தந்தையாகிய ஆபிரகாமுக்கு அவர் இட்ட ஆணையையும் நிறைவேற்ற நினைவு கூர்ந்தார். இவ்வாறு நாம் பகைவரின் பிடியிலிருந்து விடுவிக்கப்பட்டுத் தூய்மையோடும் நேர்மையோடும் வாழ்நாளெல்லாம் அச்சமின்றி அவர் திருமுன் பணி செய்யுமாறு வழிவகுத்தார்.

தாவீது அரசர் தம் அரண்மனையில் குடியேறியபின், சுற்றியிருந்த எல்லா எதிரிகளின் தொல்லையினின்றும் ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு ஓய்வு அளித்தார். அப்போது இறைவாக்கினர் நாத்தானைத் தாவீது அழைத்து, “பாரும், நான் கேதுரு மரங்களாலான அரண்மனையில் வாழ்கிறேன். கடவுளின் பேழையோ கூடாரத்தில் குடியிருக்கிறது” என்று கூறினார்.

Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

At that time,

when John the Baptist was born,

his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit

and spoke these prophetic words:

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

who visits and redeems his people.

He has raised up the power of salvation for us

in the house of David his servant,

as he spoke by the mouth of his saints,

through his prophets from of old:

salvation that delivers us from the enemy,

from the hand of all who oppress us, and

love that he showed to our fathers,

and the memory of his holy covenant;

an oath sworn to our father Abraham

to deliver us without fear,

so that, having been delivered from the hand of our enemies,

we may serve him in righteousness and holiness

before him all our days.

You too, little child, will be called

a prophet of the Most High;

The kingdom of David will endure forever before the face of the Lord (2 S 7, 1-5.8b-12.14a.16)

Reading from the second book of Samuel

King David was finally living in his house.

The Lord had given him peace

by delivering him from all the enemies around him.

Then the king said to Nathan the prophet,

“Look! I live in a house of cedar,

and the ark of God lives in a tent of cloth!”

Nathan answered the king, “ Do

whatever you intend to do, for the Lord is with you.” But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: “Go and tell my servant David, ‘ Thus says the Lord: Will you build me a house to live in? I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone; I have struck down all your enemies before you. I have made you a name as great as the great ones of the earth. ’” I will plant my people Israel in this place, and they will dwell there and will not be afraid. The wicked will no longer come and afflict them, as they did in the past, since the day I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. I have given you rest from all your enemies.

The Lord says to you

that he himself will make you a house.

When your days are fulfilled

and you rest with your fathers,

I will raise up for you a successor from your descendants,

who will be born of you,

and I will establish his kingdom.

I will be a father to him,

and he will be a son to me.

Your house and your kingdom will be established before me forever, and

your throne will be established forever.
