A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 14: 23-29 

A peace the world cannot give is my gift to you

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If anyone loves me he will keep my word,

and my Father will love him,

and we shall come to him and make our home with him.

Those who do not love me do not keep my words.

And my word is not my own:

it is the word of the one who sent me.

I have said these things to you while still with you;

but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,

whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you everything

and remind you of all I have said to you.

Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you,

a peace the world cannot give,

this is my gift to you.

Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

You heard me say: I am going away, and shall return.

If you loved me you would have been glad to know that I am going to the Father,

for the Father is greater than I.

I have told you this now before it happens,

so that when it does happen you may believe.’

He showed me the holy city coming down out of heaven

A reading from the book of Apocalypse 21:10-14,22-23 

In the spirit, the angel took me to the top of an enormous high mountain and showed me Jerusalem, the holy city, coming down from God out of heaven. It had all the radiant glory of God and glittered like some precious jewel of crystal-clear diamond. The walls of it were of a great height, and had twelve gates; at each of the twelve gates there was an angel, and over the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel; on the east there were three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. The city walls stood on twelve foundation stones, each one of which bore the name of one of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

  I saw that there was no temple in the city since the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb were themselves the temple, and the city did not need the sun or the moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and the Lamb was a lighted torch for it.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 15: 1-2,22-29

Some men came down from Judaea and taught the brothers, ‘Unless you have yourselves circumcised in the tradition of Moses you cannot be saved.’ This led to disagreement, and after Paul and Barnabas had had a long argument with these men it was arranged that Paul and Barnabas and others of the church should go up to Jerusalem and discuss the problem with the apostles and elders.

Then the apostles and elders decided to choose delegates to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; the whole church concurred with this. They chose Judas known as Barsabbas and Silas, both leading men in the brotherhood, and gave them this letter to take with them:

‘The apostles and elders, your brothers, send greetings to the brothers of pagan birth in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia. We hear that some of our members have disturbed you with their demands and have unsettled your minds. They acted without any authority from us; and so we have decided unanimously to elect delegates and to send them to you with Barnabas and Paul, men we highly respect who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accordingly we are sending you Judas and Silas, who will confirm by word of mouth what we have written in this letter. It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves not to saddle you with any burden beyond these essentials: you are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols; from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right. Farewell.’

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுல் தெருபை, லிஸ்திரா ஆகிய நகர்களை வந்தடைந்தார். லிஸ்திராவில் திமொத்தேயு என்னும் பெயருள்ள சீடர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவருடைய தாய் ஆண்டவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்ட ஒரு யூதப் பெண். தந்தையோ கிரேக்கர். திமொத்தேயு லிஸ்திராவிலும், இக்கோனியாவிலும் உள்ள சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளிடையே நற்சான்று பெற்றவர். பவுல் அவரைத் தம்முடன் கூட்டிச் செல்ல விரும்பினார். அவ்விடங்களிலுள்ள யூதரின் பொருட்டு அவருக்கு விருத்தசேதனம் செய்வித்தார். ஏனெனில் அனைவரும் அவருடைய தந்தை கிரேக்கர் என்று அறிந்திருந்தனர்.

அவர்கள் நகர் நகராகச் சென்றபோது எருசலேமிலுள்ள மூப்பரும் திருத்தூதரும் செய்த தீர்மானங்களை அவர்களிடம் கொடுத்துக் கடைப் பிடிக்குமாறு கூறினார். இவ்வாறு திருச்சபைகள் நம்பிக்கையில் உறுதி பெற்று நாளுக்கு நாள் எண்ணிக்கையில் பெருகிவந்தன.

பின்பு ஆசியாவில் இறைவார்த்தையை அறிவிக்காதவாறு தூய ஆவியார் தடுக்கவே, அவர்கள் பிரிகிய, கலாத்தியப் பகுதிகளைக் கடந்து சென்றனர். அவர்கள் மீசியா அருகே வந்து பித்தினியாவுக்குச் செல்ல முயன்றபோது இயேசுவின் ஆவியார் அவர்களை அங்குப் போகவிடவில்லை. எனவே அவர்கள் மீசியா வழியாகச் சென்று துரோவா நகரை அடைந்தனர்.

பவுல் அங்கு இரவில் ஒரு காட்சி கண்டார். அதில் மாசிதோனியர் ஒருவர் வந்து நின்று, “நீர் மாசிதோனியாவுக்கு வந்து எங்களுக்கு உதவி செய்யும்” என்று வேண்டினார். இக்காட்சியைப் பவுல் கண்டதும், நாங்கள் மாசிதோனியருக்கு நற்செய்தி அறிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று கடவுள் தீர்மானித்துள்ளார் என எண்ணி, அங்குச் செல்ல வழி தேடினோம்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 15: 18-21 

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If the world hates you,

remember that it hated me before you.

If you belonged to the world,

the world would love you as its own;

but because you do not belong to the world,

because my choice withdrew you from the world,

therefore the world hates you.

Remember the words I said to you: A servant is not greater than his master.

If they persecuted me, they will persecute you too;

if they kept my word, they will keep yours as well.

But it will be on my account that they will do all this,

because they do not know the one who sent me.’

'Come across to Macedonia and help us'

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 16: 1-10 

From Cilicia Paul went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra. Here there was a disciple called Timothy, whose mother was a Jewess who had become a believer; but his father was a Greek. The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of Timothy, and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travelling companion, had him circumcised. This was on account of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.

  As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, with instructions to respect them.

  So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.

  They travelled through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been told by the Holy Spirit not to preach the word in Asia. When they reached the frontier of Mysia they thought to cross it into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them, they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.

  One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and appealed to him in these words, ‘Come across to Macedonia and help us.’ Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced that God had called us to bring them the Good News.
