இப்போது என் உயிரை ஆண்மையுடன் கையளிப்பதன் மூலம் என் முதுமைக்கு நான் தகுதியுடையவன் என மெய்ப்பிப்பேன்.

மக்கபேயர் இரண்டாம் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 6: 18-31

அந்நாள்களில்

தலைசிறந்த மறைநூல் அறிஞர்களுள் ஒருவரும் வயதில் முதிர்ந்தவரும் மாண்புறு தோற்றம் உடையவருமான எலயாசர் பன்றி இறைச்சி உண்ணத் தம் வாயைத் திறக்குமாறு கட்டாயப்படுத்தப்பட்டார். ஆனால் அவர் மாசுபடிந்தவராய் வாழ்வதை விட மதிப்புடையவராய் இறப்பதைத் தேர்ந்து கொண்டு இறைச்சியை வெளியே துப்பிவிட்டுத் தாமாகவே சித்திரவதைக் கருவியை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். உயிர்மேல் ஆசை இருப்பினும், திருச்சட்டம் விலக்கியிருந்த பண்டங்களைச் சுவைத்தும் பாராமல் தள்ளிவிடத் துணியும் எல்லாரும் இவ்வாறே செய்யவேண்டும்.

சட்டத்திற்கு எதிரான அந்தப் பலி விருந்துக்குப் பொறுப்பாய் இருந்தவர்கள் அவரோடு கொண்டிருந்த நீண்டகாலப் பழக்கம் காரணமாக அவரை ஒதுக்கமாக அழைத்துச் சென்று, அவர் உண்ணக்கூடிய இறைச்சியை அவரே தயாரித்துக் கொண்டுவருமாறும், மன்னன் கட்டளையிட்டபடி பலியிடப்பட்ட இறைச்சியை உண்பது போல நடிக்குமாறும் அவரைத் தனிமையில் வேண்டிக் கொண்டார்கள். இவ்வாறு செய்வதால் அவர் சாவினின்று காப்பாற்றப்படுவார் என்றும், அவரோடு அவர்கள் கொண்டிருந்த பழைய நட்பின் காரணமாக மனிதநேயத்தோடு நடத்தப்படுவார் என்றும் அவர்கள் எண்ணினார்கள். ஆனால் எலயாசர் தமது வயதுக்குரிய தகுதிக்கும் முதுமைக்குரிய மேன்மைக்கும் நரைமுடிக்குரிய மாண்புக்கும் சிறு வயதுமுதல் தாம் நடத்தியிருந்த மாசற்ற வாழ்க்கைக்கும் கடவுள் கொடுத்திருந்த திருச்சட்டத்திற்கும் ஏற்றபடி மேலான முறையில் உறுதிபூண்டவராய், உடனே தமது முடிவைத் தெரிவித்து, தம்மைக் கொன்றுவிடுமாறு கூறினார்.

அவர் தொடர்ந்து, “இவ்வாறு நடிப்பது எனது வயதுக்கு ஏற்றதல்ல; ஏனெனில், தொண்ணூறு வயதான எலயாசர் அன்னியருடைய மறையை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டுவிட்டார் என இளைஞருள் பலர் எண்ணக்கூடும். குறுகிய, நிலையில்லாத வாழ்வுக்காக நான் இவ்வாறு நடிப்பேனாகில் என் பொருட்டு அவர்கள் நெறி பிறழ நேரிடும்; அவ்வாறு நேரிட்டால் அது என் முதுமையை நானே களங்கப்படுத்துவதும் இழிவுபடுத்துவதும் ஆகும். மனிதரின் தண்டனையினின்று நான் தற்காலிகமாக விடுபட்டாலும், உயிரோடு வாழ்ந்தாலும் இறந்தாலும், நான் எல்லாம் வல்லவருடைய கைக்குத் தப்ப முடியாது. ஆகவே இப்போது என் உயிரை ஆண்மையுடன் கையளிப்பதன் மூலம் என் முதுமைக்கு நான் தகுதியுடையவன் என மெய்ப்பிப்பேன்; மதிப்புக்குரிய, தூய சட்டங்களுக்காக விருப்போடும் பெருந்தன்மையோடும் எவ்வாறு இறப்பது என்பதற்கு ஓர் உயரிய எடுத்துக்காட்டை விட்டுச் செல்வேன்” என்றார்.

இதெல்லாம் கூறி முடித்ததும் அவர் சித்திரவதைக் கருவியை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். சற்றுமுன் அவரைக் கனிவோடு நடத்தியவர்கள் இப்போது கல்நெஞ்சராய் மாறினார்கள்; ஏனெனில் அவர் கூறியது அவர்களுக்கு மடமையாகத் தோன்றியது.

அடிபட்டதால் இறக்கும் தறுவாயில் இருந்தபோது அவர் அழுது புலம்பி, “நான் சாவினின்று விடுவிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என்றாலும், அடியினால் என் உடலில் ஏற்படும் கொடிய துன்பங்களைத் தாங்கிக் கொள்கிறேன்; ஆண்டவருக்கு நான் அஞ்சுவதால் என் உள்ளத்தில் மகிழ்ச்சியோடு இவற்றை ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறேன்; ஆண்டவர் தம் தூய ஞானத்தால் இவற்றையெல்லாம் அறிகிறார்” என்றார். இவ்வாறு எலயாசர் உயிர் துறந்தார்.

அவருடைய இறப்பு இளைஞர்களுக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, அவருடைய நாட்டு மக்கள் அனைவருக்குமே சான்றாண்மைக்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டாகவும் நற்பண்புக்கு அடையாளமாகவும் விளங்கியது.

At that time: Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

A reading from the second book of Maccabees 6:18-31 

In those days: Eleazar, one of the scribes in high position, a man now advanced in age and of noble presence, was being forced to open his mouth to eat swine’s flesh. But he, welcoming death with honour rather than life with pollution, went up to the rack of his own accord, spitting out the flesh, as men ought to go who have the courage to refuse things that it is not right to taste, even for the natural love of life. Those who were in charge of that unlawful sacrifice took the man aside,

because of their long acquaintance with him, and privately urged him to bring meat of his own providing, proper for him to use, and pretend that he was eating the flesh of the sacrificial meal that had been commanded by the king, so that by doing this he might be saved from death and be treated kindly on account of his old friendship with them. But making a high resolve, worthy of his years and the dignity of his old age and the grey hairs that he had reached with distinction and his excellent life even from childhood, and moreover according to the holy God-given law, he declared himself quickly, telling them to send him to the grave. “Such pretence is not worthy of our time of life”, he said, “lest many of the young should suppose that Eleazar in his ninetieth year has gone over to an alien religion, and through my pretence, for the sake of living a brief moment longer, they should be led astray because of me, while I defile and disgrace my old age. For even if for the present I should avoid the punishment of men, yet whether I live or die I shall not escape the hands of the Almighty. Therefore, by manfully giving up my life now, I will show myself worthy of my old age and leave to the young a noble example of how to die a good death willingly and nobly for the revered and holy laws.” When he had said this, he went at once to the rack. And those who a little before had acted towards him with good will now changed to ill will, because the words he had uttered were in their opinion sheer madness. When he was about to die under the blows, he groaned aloud and said: “It is clear to the Lord in his holy knowledge that, though I might have been saved from death, I am enduring terrible sufferings in my body under this beating, but in my soul I am glad to suffer these things because I fear him.” So in this way he died, leaving in his death an example of nobility and a memorial of courage, not only to the young but to the great body of his nation.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எரிகோவை நெருங்கி வந்தபோது, பார்வையற்ற ஒருவர் வழியோரமாய் உட்கார்ந்து பிச்சையெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். மக்கள் கூட்டம் கடந்து போய்க்கொண்டிருந்ததைக் கவனித்த அவர், “இது என்ன?” என்று வினவினார். நாசரேத்து இயேசு போய்க்கொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்று அவருக்குத் தெரிவித்தார்கள்.

உடனே அவர், “இயேசுவே! தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்” என்று கூக்குரலிட்டார். முன்னே சென்றுகொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் அமைதியாய் இருக்குமாறு அவரை அதட்டினார்கள். ஆனால் அவர், “தாவீதின் மகனே, எனக்கு இரங்கும்” என்று இன்னும் உரக்கக் கத்தினார்.

இயேசு நின்று, அவரைத் தம்மிடம் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வரும்படி ஆணையிட்டார்.

அவர் நெருங்கி வந்ததும், “நான் உமக்கு என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என விரும்புகிறீர்?” என்று இயேசு கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர், “ஆண்டவரே, நான் மீண்டும் பார்வை பெற வேண்டும்” என்றார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “பார்வை பெறும்; உமது நம்பிக்கை உம்மை நலமாக்கிற்று” என்றார்.

அவர் உடனே பார்வை பெற்று, கடவுளைப் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்து கொண்டே இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றினார். இதைக் கண்ட மக்கள் யாவரும் கடவுளைப் புகழ்ந்தனர்.

மன்னர் அந்தியோக்கின் மகன் அந்தியோக்கு எப்பிபான் ஆவான்; முன்பு உரோமையில் பிணைக் கைதியாக இருந்த அவன் கிரேக்கப் பேரரசின் நூற்று முப்பத்தேழாம் ஆண்டு ஆட்சி செய்யத் தொடங்கினான்.

அக்காலத்தில் இஸ்ரயேலில் தீநெறியாளர் சிலர் தோன்றி, “வாருங்கள், நம்மைச் சுற்றிலும் இருக்கும் வேற்றினத்தாரோடு நாம் உடன்படிக்கை செய்து கொள்வோம்; ஏனெனில் நாம் அவர்களை விட்டுப் பிரிந்ததிலிருந்து நமக்குப் பலவகைக் கேடுகள் நேர்ந்துள்ளன” என்று கூறி, மக்கள் அனைவரையும் தவறான வழியில் செல்லத் தூண்டினர். இது அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்புடையதாய் இருந்தது. உடனே மக்களுள் சிலர் ஆர்வத்தோடு மன்னனிடம் சென்றனர். அவர்கள் கேட்டதற்கு இணங்க, வேற்றினத்தாரின் விதிமுறைகளைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பதற்கு அவன் அவர்களுக்கு உரிமை அளித்தான். வேற்றினத்தாருடைய பழக்க வழக்கத்திற்கு ஏற்ப அவர்கள் எருசலேமில் உடற்பயிற்சிக் கூடம் ஒன்று ஏற்படுத்தினார்கள்; விருத்தசேதனத்தின் அடையாளத்தை மறைத்து, தூய உடன்படிக்கையை விட்டுவிட்டு, வேற்றினத்தாரோடு கலந்து, எல்லா வகைத் தீமைகளையும் செய்தார்கள்.

எல்லாரும் ஒரே மக்களினமாய் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்றும், தனிப்பட்ட பழக்க வழக்கங்களைக் கைவிட வேண்டும் என்றும் அந்தியோக்கு மன்னன் தன் பேரரசு முழுவதிலும் ஆணை பிறப்பித்தான். மன்னனின் கட்டளைப்படி நடக்கப் பிற இனத்தார் அனைவரும் இசைந்தனர். இஸ்ரயேலருள் பலர் மன்னனுடைய வழிபாட்டு முறைகளை மனமுவந்து ஏற்றுக் கொண்டனர்; சிலைகளுக்குப் பலியிட்டனர்; ஓய்வு நாளைத் தீட்டுப்படுத்தினர்.

நூற்று நாற்பத்தைந்தாம் ஆண்டு கிஸ்லேவு மாதம் பதினைந்தாம் நாள் அந்தியோக்கும் அவனுடைய ஆள்களும் பலிபீடத்தின் மேல் நடுங்க வைக்கும் தீட்டை நிறுவினார்கள்; யூதேயாவின் நகரங்களெங்கும் சிலை வழிபாட்டுக்கான பீடங்களைக் கட்டினார்கள்; வீட்டுக் கதவுகளுக்கு முன்பும் வீதிகளிலும் தூபம் காட்டினார்கள்; தங்கள் கண்ணில் பட்ட திருச்சட்ட நூல் ஒவ்வொன்றையும் கிழித்து நெருப்பிலிட்டு எரித்தார்கள். எவரிடம் உடன்படிக்கை நூல் காணப்பட்டதோ, யார் திருச்சட்டத்தின்படி நடந்துவந்தார்களோ அவர்கள் அனைவரும் கொல்லப்பட வேண்டும் என்பது மன்னனது கட்டளை.

எனினும் இஸ்ரயேலருள் பலர் உறுதியாய் இருந்தனர்; தூய்மையற்ற உணவுப் பொருள்களை உண்பதில்லை என்று தங்களுக்குள் முடிவு செய்து கொண்டனர்; உணவுப் பொருள்களால் தங்களைத் தீட்டுப்படுத்திக் கொள்வதை விட, தூய உடன்படிக்கையை மாசுபடுத்துவதை விடச் சாவதே சிறந்தது என்று கருதினர்; அவ்வாறே இறந்தனர். இவ்வாறு இஸ்ரயேல் மீது பேரிடர் வந்துற்றது.

It happened that, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. And hearing a crowd going by, he enquired what this meant. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, Have mercy on me!” And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more,

“Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; Your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

The persecution of Antiochus Epiphanes

A reading from the first book of Maccabees 1:10-15,41-43,54-57,62-64 

In those days: There came forth a sinful root, Antiochus Epiphanes son of King Antiochus; he had been a hostage in Rome. He began to reign in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks. In those days lawless men came forth from Israel and misled many, saying, “Let us go and make a covenant with the Gentiles round about us, for since we separated from them many evils have come upon us.” This proposal pleased them, and some of the people eagerly went to the king. He authorized them to observe the ordinances of the Gentiles. So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem,  according to Gentile custom, and removed the marks of circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant. They joined with the Gentiles and sold themselves to do evil. Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people and that each should give up his customs. All the Gentiles accepted the command of the king. Many even from Israel gladly adopted his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the Sabbath. Now on the fifteenth day of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-fifth year, they erected a desolating sacrilege upon the altar of whole burnt offering. They also built altars in the surrounding cities of Judah and burned incense at the doors of the houses and in the streets. The books of the law that they found they tore to pieces and burned with fire. Where the book of the covenant was found in the possession of anyone or if anyone adhered to the law, the decree of the king condemned him to death. But many in Israel stood firm and were resolved in their hearts not to eat unclean food. They chose to die rather than to be defiled by food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. And very great wrath came upon Israel.
