A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 19:41-44 

At that time: When Jesus drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade round you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

“Gather my holy ones to me, who made covenant with me by sacrifice.” The heavens proclaim his justice, for he, God, is the judge.

A reading from the first book of Maccabees 2: 15-29 

In those days: The king’s officers who were enforcing the apostasy came to the city of Modein to make them offer sacrifice. Many from Israel came to them; and Mattathias and his sons were assembled. Then the king’s officers spoke to Mattathias as follows: “You are a leader, honoured and great in this city, and supported by sons and brothers. Now be the first to come and do what the king commands, as all the Gentiles and the men of Judah and those who are left in Jerusalem have done.

Then you and your sons will be numbered among the friends of the king, and you and your sons will be honoured with silver and gold and many gifts.” But Mattathias answered and said in a loud voice: “Even if all the nations which live under the rule of the king obey him and have chosen to do his commandments, departing each one from the religion of his fathers, yet I and my sons and my brothers will live by the covenant of our fathers. Far be it from us to desert the law and the ordinances.

We will not obey the king’s words by turning aside from our religion to the right hand or to the left.” When he had finished speaking these words, a Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice upon the altar in Modein, according to the king’s command. When Mattathias saw it, he burned with zeal and his heart was stirred. He gave vent to righteous anger;

he ran and slaughtered him upon the altar. At the same time he killed the king’s officer who was forcing them to sacrifice, and he tore down the altar. Thus he burned with zeal for the law, as Phinehas did against Zimri son of Salom. Then Mattathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying: “Let everyone who is zealous for the law and supports the covenant come out with me!” And he and his sons fled to the hills and left all that they had in the city. Then many who were seeking righteousness and justice went down to the wilderness to dwell there.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எருசலேமை நெருங்கி வந்துகொண்டிருந்தார். அவர் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தவர்கள் இறையாட்சி உடனடியாகத் தோன்றப்போகிறது என்று நினைத்தார்கள். அப்போது இயேசு மேலும் ஓர் உவமையைச் சொன்னார்:

“உயர் குடிமகன் ஒருவர் ஆட்சியுரிமை பெற்றுவரத் தொலை நாட்டிற்குப் போகப் புறப்பட்டார். அப்போது அவர் தம் பணியாளர்கள் பத்துப் பேரை அழைத்து, பத்து மினாக்களை அவர்களிடம் கொடுத்து அவர்களை நோக்கி, ‘நான் வரும்வரை இவற்றை வைத்து வாணிகம் செய்யுங்கள்’ என்று சொன்னார்.

அவருடைய குடிமக்களோ, அவரை வெறுத்தனர். எனவே, ‘இவர் அரசராக இருப்பது எங்களுக்கு விருப்பமில்லை’ என்று சொல்லித் தூது அனுப்பினர்.

இருப்பினும் அவர் ஆட்சியுரிமை பெற்றுத் திரும்பி வந்தார். பின்னர் தம்மிடம் பணம் வாங்கியிருந்த பணியாளர் ஒவ்வொருவரும் ஈட்டியது எவ்வளவு என்று அறிய அவர் அவர்களைக் கூப்பிட்டு அனுப்பினார்.

முதலாம் பணியாளர் வந்து, ‘ஐயா, உமது மினாவைக் கொண்டு பத்து மினாக்களைச் சேர்த்துள்ளேன்’ என்றார். அதற்கு அவர் அவரிடம், ‘நன்று, நல்ல பணியாளரே, மிகச் சிறிய பொறுப்புகளில் நம்பிக்கைக்கு உரியவராய் இருந்தீர். எனவே பத்து நகர்களுக்கு அதிகாரியாய் இரும்’ என்றார். இரண்டாம் பணியாளர் வந்து, ‘ஐயா உமது மினாவைக் கொண்டு ஐந்து மினாக்களை ஈட்டியுள்ளேன்’ என்றார். அவர், ‘எனவே நீர் ஐந்து நகர்களுக்கு அதிகாரியாய் இரும்’ என்று அவரிடமும் சொன்னார்.

வேறொருவர் வந்து, ‘ஐயா, இதோ உமது மினா. ஒரு கைக்குட்டையில் முடிந்து வைத்திருக்கிறேன். ஏனெனில் நீர் கண்டிப்புள்ளவர் என்று உமக்கு அஞ்சி இப்படிச் செய்தேன். நீர் வைக்காததை எடுக்கிறவர்; நீர் விதைக்காததை அறுக்கிறவர்’ என்றார். அதற்கு அவர் அவரிடம், ‘பொல்லாத பணியாளே, உன் வாய்ச் சொல்லைக் கொண்டே உனக்குத் தீர்ப்பிடுகிறேன். நான் கண்டிப்பானவன்; வைக்காததை எடுக்கிறவன்; விதைக்காததை அறுக்கிறவன் என உனக்குத் தெரியுமல்லவா? அப்படியானால் ஏன் என் பணத்தை வட்டிக் கடையில் கொடுத்து வைக்கவில்லை? நான் வந்து அதை வட்டியோடு சேர்த்துப் பெற்றிருப்பேனே’ என்றார்.

பின்பு அருகில் நின்றவர்களிடம், ‘அந்த மினாவை அவனிடமிருந்து எடுத்து, பத்து மினாக்கள் உள்ளவருக்குக் கொடுங்கள்’ என்றார். அதற்கு அவர்கள், ‘ஐயா, அவரிடம் பத்து மினாக்கள் இருக்கின்றனவே’ என்றார்கள்.

அவரோ, ‘உள்ளவர் எவருக்கும் கொடுக்கப்படும். இல்லாதோரிட மிருந்து உள்ளதும் எடுக்கப்படும்’ என உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்’ என்றார். மேலும் அவர், ‘நான் அரசனாக இருப்பதை விரும்பாத என் பகைவர்களை இங்குக் கொண்டு வந்து என்முன் படுகொலை செய்யுங்கள்’ என்று சொன்னார்."

இவற்றைச் சொன்ன பின்பு இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு முன்பாக எருசலேமுக்குப் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார்.

சகோதரர்கள் எழுவரும் அவர்களுடைய தாயும் கைது செய்யப்பட்டார்கள்; சாட்டைகளாலும் வார்களாலும் அடிக்கப்பட்டுச் சட்டத்துக்கு முரணாகப் பன்றி இறைச்சியை உண்ணும்படி மன்னனால் கட்டாயப்படுத்தப்பட்டார்கள்.

எல்லாருக்கும் மேலாக, அவர்களுடைய தாய் மிகவும் போற்றுதற்குரியவர், பெரும் புகழுக்குரியவர். ஒரே நாளில் தம் ஏழு மைந்தர்களும் கொல்லப்பட்டதை அவர் கண்ட போதிலும், ஆண்டவர் மீது கொண்டிருந்த நம்பிக்கையால் அவை அனைத்தையும் மிகத் துணிவோடு தாங்கிக் கொண்டார்; அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் தாய்மொழியில் அறிவுரை கூறினார்.

தாம் இகழப்படுவதாக அந்தியோக்கு நினைத்தான்; அந்தத் தாயின் கூற்றில் ஏளனம் இருப்பதாக ஐயுற்றான்; எல்லாருக்கும் இளைய சகோதரர் இன்னும் உயிரோடு இருக்கக் கண்டு, “உன் மூதாதையரின் பழக்க வழக்கங்களை நீ கைவிட்டு விட்டால், உன்னைச் செல்வனாகவும் பிறர் அழுக்காறு கொள்ளும் வகையில் உயர்ந்தவனாகவும் ஆக்குவதோடு, என் நண்பனாகவும் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு உனக்கு உயர்பதவி வழங்குவேன்” என்று சொன்னது மட்டுமன்றி உறுதியும் கூறி ஆணையிட்டான். அவ்விளைஞர் மன்னனின் சொற்களுக்குச் சிறிதும் செவிசாய்க்காததால், அவருடைய தாயை அவன் தன்னிடம் அழைத்து அந்த இளைஞர் தம்மையே காத்துக் கொள்ளும்படி அறிவுரை கூறுமாறு வேண்டினான்.

மன்னன் அவரை மிகவும் வேண்டிக்கொண்டதனால், அந்தத் தாய் தம் மகனை இணங்க வைக்க இசைந்தார். ஆனால் அந்தக் கொடுங்கோலனை ஏளனம் செய்தவராய், அவர் தம் மகன் பக்கம் குனிந்தவாறு தம் தாய்மொழியில், “மகனே, என்மீது இரக்கங்கொள். ஒன்பது மாதம் உன்னை என் வயிற்றில் சுமந்தேன்; முன்று ஆண்டு உனக்குப் பாலூட்டி வளர்த்தேன்; இந்த வயது வரை உன்னைப் பேணிக்காத்து வந்துள்ளேன். குழந்தாய், உன்னை நான் வேண்டுவது: விண்ணையும் மண்ணையும் பார்; அவற்றில் உள்ள அனைத்தையும் உற்று நோக்கு. கடவுள் இவை அனைத்தையும் ஏற்கெனவே இருந்தவற்றிலிருந்து உண்டாக்கவில்லை. இவ்வாறே மனித இனமும் தோன்றிற்று என்பதை அறிந்து கொள்வாய். இக்கொலைஞனுக்கு அஞ்சாதே; ஆனால் நீ உன் சகோதரர்களுக்கு ஏற்றவன் என மெய்ப்பித்துக் காட்டு. இறைவனின் இரக்கத்தால் உன் சகோதரர்களோடு உன்னையும் நான் திரும்பப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ளும்படி இப்போது சாவை ஏற்றுக்கொள்” என்று சொல்லி ஊக்கமூட்டினார்.

தாய் பேசி முடிப்பதற்குள் அந்த இளைஞர் பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்: “எதற்காக நீங்கள் காத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள்? மன்னனின் கட்டளைக்கு நான் கீழ்ப்படியமாட்டேன். மோசே வழியாக எங்கள் மூதாதையருக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்ட திருச்சட்டத்தின் கட்டளைகளுக்கே கீழ்ப்படிவேன். எபிரேயருக்கு எதிராக எல்லா வகைத் துன்பங்களையும் திட்டமிட்ட நீ, கடவுளின் கைக்குத் தப்பமாட்டாய்” என்றார்.

At that time: Jesus proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? Why then did you not put my money in the bank,

and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. But as for these enemies of mine,

who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’” And when Jesus had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

The creator of the world will give you back both breath and life.

A reading from the second book of Maccabees 7:1, 20-31 

In those days: It happened also that seven brothers and their mother were arrested and were being compelled by the king, under torture with whips and cords, to partake of unlawful swine’s flesh. The mother was especially admirable and worthy of honourable memory. Though she saw her seven sons perish within a single day, she bore it with good courage because of her hope in the Lord. She encouraged each of them in the language of their fathers. Filled with a noble spirit, she fired her woman’s reasoning with a man’s courage and said to them, “I do not know how you came into being in my womb. It was not I who gave you life and breath, nor I who set in order the elements within each of you. Therefore the Creator of the world,

who shaped the beginning of mankind and devised the origin of all things, will in his mercy give life and breath back to you again, since you now forget yourselves for the sake of his laws.” Antiochus felt that he was being treated with contempt, and he was suspicious of her reproachful tone. The youngest brother being still alive, Antiochus not only appealed to him in words, but promised with oaths that he would make him rich and enviable if he would turn from the ways of his fathers and that he would take him for his friend and entrust him with public affairs. Since the young man would not listen to him at all, the king called the mother to him and urged her to advise the youth to save himself. After much urging on his part, she undertook to persuade her son. But, leaning close to him, she spoke in their native tongue as follows, deriding the cruel tyrant: “My son, have pity on me. I carried you nine months in my womb and nursed you for three years and have reared you and brought you up to this point in your life and have taken care of you. I urge you, my child, to look at the heaven and the earth and see everything that is in them and recognize that not out of things that already existed did God make them, and so too the human race comes into being. Do not fear this butcher, but prove worthy of your brothers. Accept death, so that in God’s mercy I may get you back again along with your brothers.” Now as she was speaking, the young man said, “What are you waiting for? I will not obey the king’s command, but I obey the command of the law that was given to our fathers through Moses. But you, who have contrived all sorts of evil against the Hebrews, will certainly not escape the hands of God.”

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு எரிகோவுக்குச் சென்று அந்நகர் வழியே போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தார். அங்கு சக்கேயு என்னும் பெயருடைய செல்வர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் வரிதண்டுவோருக்குத் தலைவர். இயேசு யார் என்று அவர் பார்க்க விரும்பினார்; மக்கள் திரளாய்க் கூடியிருந்ததால் அவரைப் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை. ஏனெனில், சக்கேயு குட்டையாய் இருந்தார். அவர் முன்னே ஓடிப்போய், அவரைப் பார்ப்பதற்காக ஒரு காட்டு அத்தி மரத்தில் ஏறிக்கொண்டார். இயேசு அவ்வழியேதான் வரவிருந்தார்.

இயேசு அந்த இடத்திற்கு வந்தவுடன், அண்ணாந்து பார்த்து அவரிடம், “சக்கேயு, விரைவாய் இறங்கி வாரும்; இன்று உமது வீட்டில் நான் தங்க வேண்டும்” என்றார். அவர் விரைவாய் இறங்கி வந்து மகிழ்ச்சியோடு அவரை வரவேற்றார். இதைக் கண்ட யாவரும், “பாவியிடம் தங்கப் போயிருக்கிறாரே இவர்” என்று முணுமுணுத்தனர். சக்கேயு எழுந்து நின்று, “ஆண்டவரே, என் உடைமைகளில் பாதியை ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடுத்துவிடுகிறேன்; எவர் மீதாவது பொய்க்குற்றம் சுமத்தி எதையாவது கவர்ந்திருந்தால் நான் அதை நான்கு மடங்காகத் திருப்பிக் கொடுத்து விடுகிறேன்” என்று அவரிடம் கூறினார். இயேசு அவரை நோக்கி, “இன்று இந்த வீட்டிற்கு மீட்பு உண்டாயிற்று; ஏனெனில் இவரும் ஆபிரகாமின் மகனே! இழந்து போனதைத் தேடி மீட்கவே மானிடமகன் வந்திருக்கிறார்” என்று சொன்னார்.
