A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 5:17-37 

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murder will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.”

God predestined wisdom to be for our glory before the ages began

A Reading from the First Letter of St.Paul to the Corinthians 2:6-10 

Brethren: Among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

A Reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus 15:16-21 

If you desire, you will keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of choice. He has placed before you fire and water: stretch out your hand for whichever you wish. Life and death are in front of people, and whichever one chooses will be given to him. For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and sees everything; his eyes are on those who fear him, and he knows a person’s every deed. He has not commanded anyone to be ungodly, and he has not given anyone permission to sin.

அக்காலத்தில்

மீண்டும் பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் கூடியிருந்தார்கள். உண்பதற்கு அவர்களிடம் ஒன்றுமில்லை. இயேசு தம் சீடரை வரவழைத்து அவர்களிடம், “நான் இம்மக்கள் கூட்டத்தின்மீது பரிவு கொள்கிறேன். ஏற்கெனவே மூன்று நாள்களாக இவர்கள் என்னுடன் இருக்கிறார்கள். உண்பதற்கும் இவர்களிடம் எதுவுமில்லை. நான் இவர்களைப் பட்டினியாக வீட்டிற்கு அனுப்பி விட்டால் வழியில் தளர்ச்சி அடைவார்கள். இவர்களுள் சிலர் நெடுந்தொலையிலிருந்து வந்துள்ளனர்” என்று கூறினார்.

அதற்கு அவருடைய சீடர்கள், “இப்பாலைநிலத்தில் இவர்களுக்குப் போதுமான உணவு அளிப்பது எப்படி?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். அப்போது அவர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “உங்களிடம் எத்தனை அப்பங்கள் உள்ளன?” என்று கேட்டார். அவர்கள் “ஏழு” என்றார்கள். தரையில் அமர மக்களுக்கு அவர் கட்டளையிட்டார்; பின்பு அந்த ஏழு அப்பங்களையும் எடுத்து, கடவுளுக்கு நன்றி செலுத்தி, பிட்டு, பரிமாறும்படி தம் சீடர்களிடம் கொடுக்க, அவர்களும் மக்களுக்கு அளித்தார்கள். சிறு மீன்கள் சிலவும் அவர்களிடம் இருந்தன. அவற்றின்மீது அவர் ஆசி கூறிப் பரிமாறச் சொன்னார்.

அவர்கள் வயிறார உண்டார்கள்; மீதியாய் இருந்த துண்டுகளை ஏழு கூடைகள் நிறைய எடுத்தார்கள். அங்கு இருந்தவர்கள் ஏறக்குறைய நாலாயிரம் பேர்.

பின்பு அவர் அவர்களை அனுப்பிவிட்டார்; உடனடியாகத் தம் சீடருடன் படகேறித் தல்மனுத்தா பகுதிக்குச் சென்றார்.

“இப்போதுள்ள நிலை நீடித்தால் அரசு தாவீதின் வீட்டுக்கே திரும்பிச் சென்றுவிடும். ஏனெனில், இம்மக்கள் எருசலேமில் உள்ள ஆண்டவரின் இல்லத்தில் பலிசெலுத்த இனிமேலும் போவார்களானால், அவர்களது உள்ளம் யூதாவின் அரசன் ரெகபெயாம் என்ற தங்கள் தலைவனை நாடும்; என்னைக் கொலை செய்துவிட்டு யூதாவின் அரசன் ரெகபெயாம் பக்கம் சேர்ந்து கொள்வார்கள்” என்று தன் இதயத்தில் எரொபவாம் சொல்லிக் கொண்டான். இதைப் பற்றித் தீரச் சிந்தித்து, அவன் பொன்னால் இரு கன்றுக் குட்டிகளைச் செய்தான். மக்களை நோக்கி, “நீங்கள் எருசலேமுக்குப் போய் வருவது பெருந்தொல்லை அல்லவா! இஸ்ரயேலரே! இதோ, உங்களை எகிப்து நாட்டிலிருந்து மீட்டுவந்த உங்கள் தெய்வங்கள்!” என்றான். இவற்றுள் ஒன்றைப் பெத்தேலிலும் மற்றொன்றைத் தாணிலும் வைத்தான். இச்செயல் பாவத்துக்குக் காரணமாயிற்று. ஏனெனில் மக்கள் கன்றுக் குட்டியை வணங்கத் தாண் வரையிலும் செல்லத் தொடங்கினர்.

மேலும் அவன் தொழுகை மேட்டுக் கோவில்கள் கட்டி, லேவியரல்லாத சாதாரண மக்களை அவற்றில் குருக்களாக நியமித்தான். அதுவுமின்றி, யூதாவின் விழாவுக்கு இணையாக, எட்டாம் மாதம் பதினைந்தாம் நாள் எரொபவாம் ஒரு விழாவை எற்படுத்திப் பலிபீடத்தின் மேல் பலியிட்டான். அவ்வாறே பெத்தேலிலும் தான் செய்து வைத்த கன்றுக் குட்டிகளுக்குப் பலியிட்டான். மேலும் தான் அமைத்திருந்த தொழுகை மேடுகளின் குருக்களைப் பெத்தேலில் பணி செய்யும்படி அமர்த்தினான்.

இவற்றின் பின்னும் எரொபவாம் தன் தீய வழியை விட்டு விலகாமல் சாதாரண மக்களைத் தொழுகை மேட்டுக் குருக்களாக அமர்த்தினான். யார் விரும்பினார்களோ, அவர்களை அவன் திருநிலைப்படுத்த, அவர்கள் தொழுகை மேட்டுக் குருக்கள் ஆயினர். இச்செயல் எரொபவாமின் வீடு பாவத்திற்கு உள்ளாவதற்கும் மண்ணிலிருந்து அழிந்தொழிந்து போவதற்கும் காரணமாயிற்று.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 8: 1-10

In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

A Reading from the First Book of Kings 12: 26-32,13:33-34 

In those days: Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David. If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.” So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. Then this thing became a sin, for the people went as far as Dan to be before one. He also made temples on high places, and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites. And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made. After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places. And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth.
