அந்நாள்களில்

அசரியா நெருப்பின் நடுவில் எழுந்து நின்று உரத்த குரலில் பின்வருமாறு மன்றாடினார்: உமது பெயரை முன்னிட்டு எங்களை என்றும் கைவிட்டு விடாதீர்; உமது உடன்படிக்கையை முறித்து விடாதீர். உம் அன்பர் ஆபிரகாமை முன்னிட்டும், உம் ஊழியர் ஈசாக்கை முன்னிட்டும், உம் தூயவர் இஸ்ரயேலை முன்னிட்டும், உம் இரக்கம் எங்களைவிட்டு நீங்கச் செய்யாதீர். விண்மீன்களைப் போலவும் கடற்கரை மணலைப் போலவும் அவர்களின் வழிமரபினரைப் பெருகச் செய்வதாக நீர் அவர்களுக்கு உறுதி அளித்தீர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 18: 21-35 

At that time: Peter came up and said to Jesus, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. In those days : Azariah stood and offered this prayer; in the midst of the fire he opened his mouth and said: “For your name’s sake do not give us up utterly and do not break your covenant and do not withdraw your mercy from us, for the sake of Abraham your beloved and for the sake of Isaac your servant and Israel your holy one, to whom you promised to make their descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as the sand on the shore of the sea. For we, O Lord, have become fewer than any nation and are brought low this day in all the world because of our sins. And at this time there is no prince or prophet or leader, no whole burnt offering or sacrifice or oblation or incense, no place to make an offering before you or to find mercy. Yet with a contrite heart and a humble spirit may we be accepted, as though it were with whole burnt offerings of rams and bulls and with tens of thousands of fat lambs; such may our sacrifice be in your sight this day, and may it accomplish after you, for there will be no shame for those who trust in you. சிரியா மன்னனின் படைத் தலைவனான நாமான் தம் தலைவனிடம் சிறப்பும் நன்மதிப்பும் பெற்றிருந்தார். ஏனெனில் அவர் மூலமாய் ஆண்டவர் சிரியாவுக்கு வெற்றி அளித்திருந்தார். அவர் வலிமைமிக்க வீரர்; ஆனால் தொழுநோயாளி. சிரியா நாட்டினர் ஒருமுறை கொள்ளையடிக்கச் சென்றபொழுது, இஸ்ரயேலைச் சார்ந்த ஒரு சிறுமியைக் கடத்திக்கொண்டு வந்திருந்தனர். அவள் நாமானின் மனைவிக்குப் பணிவிடை புரிந்து வந்தாள். அவள் தன் தலைவியை நோக்கி, “என் தலைவர் சமாரியாவில் இருக்கும் இறைவாக்கினர் முன்னிலையில் சென்றாரெனில், அவர் இவரது தொழுநோயைக் குணமாக்குவார்” என்றாள். எனவே நாமான் தம் தலைவனிடம் சென்று, “இஸ்ரயேல் நாட்டைச் சார்ந்த சிறுமி இன்னின்னவாறு கூறுகின்றாள்” என்று அவனுக்குத் தெரிவித்தார். அப்பொழுது சிரியா மன்னர், “சென்று வாரும். நான் இஸ்ரயேல் அரசனுக்கு மடல் தருகிறேன்” என்றார்.

எனவே நாமான் ஏறத்தாழ நானூறு கிலோ வெள்ளியையும், ஆறாயிரம் பொற்காசுகளையும், பத்துப் பட்டாடைகளையும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு பயணமானார். அவர் இஸ்ரயேல் அரசனிடம் அம்மடலைக் கொடுத்தார். அதில் “இத்துடன், என் பணியாளன் நாமானை உம்மிடம் அனுப்புகிறேன். அவனது தொழுநோயை நீர் குணமாக்க வேண்டும்” என்று எழுதப் பட்டிருந்தது. இஸ்ரயேல் அரசன் அம்மடலைப் படித்தவுடன் தன் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக்கொண்டு, “நானென்ன கடவுளா? உயிரைக் கொடுக்கவும், உயிரை எடுக்கவும் என்னால் இயலுமா? சிரியா மன்னன் ஒருவனை என்னிடம் அனுப்பி அவனுக்குள்ள தொழுநோயைக் குணப்படுத்தச் சொல்கிறானே! என்னோடு போரிட அவன் வாய்ப்புத் தேடுவதைப் பார்த்தீர்களா!” என்று கூறினான்.

கடவுளின் அடியவரான எலிசா இஸ்ரயேல் அரசன் இவ்வாறு தன் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக்கொண்ட செய்தியைக் கேள்வியுற்று அவனிடம் ஆள் அனுப்பி, “நீர் ஏன் உம் ஆடைகளைக் கிழித்துக் கொண்டீர்? அவன் என்னிடம் வரட்டும். இஸ்ரயேலில் ஓர் இறைவாக்கினர் உள்ளார் என அவன் அறியட்டும்” என்று சொன்னார். அவ்வாறே நாமான் தம் குதிரைகளுடனும் தேருடனும் எலிசா வீட்டு வாயில்முன் வந்து நின்றார். எலிசா, “நீ போய் யோர்தானில் ஏழுமுறை மூழ்கினால், உன் உடல் நலம் பெறும்” என்று ஆள் அனுப்பிச் சொல்லச் சொன்னார். எனவே, நாமான் சினமுற்று வெளியேறினார். அப்பொழுது அவர், “அவர் என்னிடம் வந்து, என் அருகில் நின்று, தம் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரின் பெயரைக் கூவியழைத்து, தொழுநோய் கண்ட இடத்தின்மேல் தம் கையை அசைத்துக் குணப்படுத்துவாரென்று நான் எண்ணியிருந்தேன். அபானா, பர்பார் என்ற தமஸ்கு நதிகள் இஸ்ரயேலில் உள்ள ஆறுகள் அனைத்தையும்விட மேலானவை அல்லவா? அவற்றில் மூழ்கி நான் நலமடைய முடியாதா?” என்று கூறி ஆத்திரமாய்த் திரும்பிச் செல்லலானார்.

அப்பொழுது அவருடைய வேலைக்காரர்கள் அவரை அணுகி அவரிடம், “எம் தந்தையே! இறைவாக்கினர் இதைவிட அரிதான ஒன்றை உமக்குக் கூறி இருந்தால், நீர் அதைச் செய்திருப்பீர் அல்லவா? மாறாக, ‘மூழ்கி எழும்; நலமடைவீர்’ என்று அவர் கூறும்போது அதை நீர் செய்வதற்கென்ன?” என்றனர். எனவே நாமான் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்று கடவுளின் அடியவரது வாக்கிற்கிணங்க யோர்தானில் ஏழுமுறை மூழ்கியெழ, அவர் நலமடைந்தார். அவரது உடல் சிறு பிள்ளையின் உடலைப்போல் மாறினது.

பின்பு அவர் தம் பரிவாரம் அனைத்துடன் கடவுளின் அடியவரிடம் திரும்பி வந்து, “இஸ்ரயேலைத் தவிர வேறு எந்த நாட்டிலும் கடவுள் இல்லையென இப்போது உறுதியாக அறிந்துகொண்டேன். இதோ, உம் அடியான்! எனது அன்பளிப்பை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்” என்றார்.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 4: 24-30

At that time: When Jesus had come to Nazareth, he said to the people in the synagogue, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his home town. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. But passing through their midst, he went away.

A Reading from the Second Book of Kings 5: 1-15

In those days: Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high favour, because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. He was a mighty man of valour, but he was a leper. Now the Syrians on one of their raids had carried off a little girl from the land of Israel, and she worked in the service of Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” So Naaman went in and told his lord, “Thus and so spoke the girl from the land of Israel.” And the king of Syria said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So he went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten changes of clothing. And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, “When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you Naaman my servant, that you may cure him of his leprosy.” And when the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Only consider, and see how he is seeking a quarrel with me.” But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent to the king, saying, “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come now to me, that he may know that there is a prophet in Israel.” So Naaman came with his horses and chariots and stood at the door of Elisha’s house. And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored, and you shall be clean.” But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage. But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and he came and stood before him. And he said, “Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel.”
