God sent his Son so that through him the world might be saved

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.John 3:16-18

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

A Reading from the Book of Exodus 34:4-6,8-9

In those days: Moses rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand two tablets of stone. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” And Moses quickly bowed his head towards the earth and worshipped. And he said, “If now I have found favour in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us, for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசுவும் அவருடைய சீடர்களும் மீண்டும் எருசலேமுக்கு வந்தார்கள். இயேசு கோவிலில் நடந்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது தலைமைக் குருக்கள், மறைநூல் அறிஞர்கள், மூப்பர்கள் ஆகியோர் அவரிடம் வந்து, “எந்த அதிகாரத்தால் நீர் இவற்றைச் செய்கிறீர்? இவற்றைச் செய்ய உமக்கு அதிகாரம் கொடுத்தவர் யார்?” என்று கேட்டனர். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு மறுமொழியாக, “நானும் உங்களிடம் ஒரு கேள்வி கேட்கிறேன்; நீங்கள் மறுமொழி கூறுங்கள். அப்போது எந்த அதிகாரத்தால் இவற்றைச் செய்கிறேன் என நான் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்வேன். திருமுழுக்கு அளிக்கும் அதிகாரம் யோவானுக்கு விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து வந்ததா? அல்லது மனிதரிடமிருந்து வந்ததா? எனக்குப் பதில் சொல்லுங்கள்” என்றார். அவர்கள், “ ‘விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து வந்தது’ என்போமானால், ‘பின் ஏன் அவரை நம்பவில்லை’ எனக் கேட்பார். எனவே ‘மனிதரிடமிருந்து வந்தது’ என்போமா?” என்று தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஆனால் மக்கள் அனைவரும் யோவானை ஓர் இறைவாக்கினராகக் கருதியதால் அவர்கள் அவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சினார்கள். எனவே, அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், “எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது” என்று பதிலுரைத்தார்கள். இயேசுவும் அவர்களிடம், “எந்த அதிகாரத்தால் இவற்றைச் செய்கிறேன் என்று நானும் உங்களுக்குக் கூறமாட்டேன்” என்றார்.

At that time : Jesus and the disciples came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.” And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven’, he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But shall we say, ‘From man’?” they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a prophet. So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Use your most holy faith as your foundation

A Reading from the letter of St.Jude 1:17,20-25 

You must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. Building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen.
