அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு மக்கள் கூட்டத்தையும் தம் சீடரையும் பார்த்துக் கூறியது: “மறைநூல் அறிஞரும் பரிசேயரும் மோசேயின் அதிகாரத்தைக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர். ஆகவே அவர்கள் என்னென்ன செய்யும்படி உங்களிடம் கூறுகிறார்களோ அவற்றையெல்லாம் கடைப்பிடித்து நடந்து வாருங்கள். ஆனால் அவர்கள் செய்வதுபோல நீங்கள் செய்யாதீர்கள். ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் சொல்வார்கள்; செயலில் காட்ட மாட்டார்கள். சுமத்தற்கரிய பளுவான சுமைகளைக் கட்டி மக்களின் தோளில் அவர்கள் வைக்கிறார்கள்; ஆனால் அவர்கள் தங்கள் விரலால் தொட்டு அசைக்கக்கூட முன்வர மாட்டார்கள். தாங்கள் செய்வதெல்லாம் மக்கள் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்றே அவர்கள் செய்கிறார்கள்; தங்கள் மறைநூல் வாசகப் பட்டைகளை அகலமாக்குகிறார்கள்; அங்கியின் குஞ்சங்களைப் பெரிதாக்குகிறார்கள். விருந்துகளில் முதன்மையான இடங்களையும் தொழுகைக்கூடங்களில் முதன்மையான இருக்கைகளையும் விரும்புகின்றார்கள்; சந்தைவெளிகளில் மக்கள் தங்களுக்கு வணக்கம் செலுத்துவதையும் ரபி என அழைப்பதையும் விரும்புகிறார்கள்.

ஆனால் நீங்கள் ‘ரபி’ என அழைக்கப்பட வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் உங்களுக்குப் போதகர் ஒருவரே. நீங்கள் யாவரும் சகோதரர், சகோதரிகள். இம்மண்ணுலகில் உள்ள எவரையும் தந்தை என நீங்கள் அழைக்க வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் உங்கள் தந்தை ஒருவரே. அவர் விண்ணகத்தில் இருக்கிறார். நீங்கள் ஆசிரியர் எனவும் அழைக்கப்பட வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் கிறிஸ்து ஒருவரே உங்கள் ஆசிரியர்.

உங்களுள் பெரியவர் உங்களுக்குத் தொண்டராக இருக்க வேண்டும். தம்மைத் தாமே உயர்த்துகிறவர் எவரும் தாழ்த்தப்பெறுவர். தம்மைத் தாமே தாழ்த்துகிறவர் எவரும் உயர்த்தப்பெறுவர்.”

நகோமிக்குப் போவாசு என்ற உறவினர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் செல்வமும் செல்வாக்கும் உடையவர்; எலிமலேக்கின் வழியில் உறவானவர். ரூத்து நகோமியிடம், “நான் வயலுக்குப் போய், யார் என்னைக் கருணைக் கண்கொண்டு நோக்குவாரோ, அவர் பின்னே சென்று கதிர்களைப் பொறுக்கிக் கொண்டு வருகிறேன். எனக்கு அனுமதி தாரும்” என்றார். அவரும், “போய் வா, மகளே” என்றார். ரூத்து ஒரு வயலுக்குப் போய், அறுவடையாள்கள் பின்னால் சென்று, அவர்கள் சிந்திய கதிர்களைப் பொறுக்கிச் சேர்த்தார். தற்செயலாக, அவர் போயிருந்த அந்த வயல் எலிமலேக்கிற்கு உறவினரான போவாசுக்கு உரியதாய் இருந்தது.

பிறகு, போவாசு ரூத்தை நோக்கி, “பெண்ணே, நான் சொல்வதைக் கேள். இந்த வயலைத் தவிர வேறு எந்த வயலுக்கும் போய் நீ கதிர் பொறுக்க வேண்டாம். என் வயலில் வேலை செய்யும் பெண்களுடன் இங்கேயே இரு. அறுவடையாளர்கள் வேலை செய்யும் இடத்தை நன்றாகக் கவனித்து, அங்கே போய் அவர்கள் பின்னால் கதிர்பொறுக்கும் பெண்களோடு நீயும் இரு. எந்த வேலைக்காரனும் உனக்குத் தொந்தரவு கொடுக்கக் கூடாதென நான் கட்டளையிட்டிருக்கிறேன். உனக்குத் தாகம் எடுத்தால், அவர்கள் நிரப்பி வைத்துள்ள பாண்டங்களிலிருந்து தண்ணீர் அருந்திக்கொள்” என்றார்.

ரூத்து போவாசின் பாதங்களில் வீழ்ந்து வணங்கி, “என்னை ஏன் இவ்வாறு கருணைக் கண்கொண்டு நோக்குகிறீர்? அயல் நாட்டுப் பெண்ணாகிய என்னை ஏன் இவ்வளவு பரிவுடன் நடத்துகிறீர்?” என்று கேட்டார்.

போவாசு, “உன் கணவன் இறந்ததிலிருந்து உன் மாமியாருக்காக நீ செய்துள்ள அனைத்தையும் கேள்விப்பட்டேன். உன் தந்தையையும் தாயையும் சொந்த நாட்டையும் துறந்துவிட்டு, முன்பின் தெரியாத ஓர் இனத்தாருடன் வாழ நீ வந்திருப்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும்” என்றார்.

இவ்வாறு போவாசு தாம் சொன்னபடியே ரூத்தைத் தம் வீட்டுக்கு அழைத்துச்சென்று, அவரை மணந்துகொண்டார். அவர்கள் கூடி வாழ்ந்தபோது, அவர் கருத்தரிக்க ஆண்டவர் அருள்கூர்ந்தார். ரூத்து ஓர் ஆண் மகவைப் பெற்றெடுத்தார்.

ஊர்ப் பெண்கள் நகோமியைப் பார்த்து, “ஆண்டவர் திருப்பெயர் போற்றி! போற்றி! உன்னைக் காக்கும் பொறுப்பினை உடையான் ஒருவனை அவர்தாம் அருளியுள்ளாரே; இஸ்ரயேலில் அவனது பெயரும் புகழுடன் ஓங்கித் திகழுவதாக! புதுவாழ்வு உனக்கு அன்னவன் தருவான்; முதுமையில் உனக்கு அன்னமும் அளிப்பான்; உன்பால் கொண்ட அன்பால், உனக்கு மைந்தர் எழுவரின் மேலாய் விளங்கும், மருமகள் அவனை ஈன்றவள் அன்றோ!” என்று வாழ்த்தினார்கள். நகோமி குழந்தையைக் கையில் எடுத்து மார்போடு அணைத்துக் கொண்டார். அவரே அதைப் பேணி வளர்க்கும் தாயானார்.

சுற்றுப்புறப் பெண்கள். “நகோமிக்கு ஒரு மகன் பிறந்துள்ளான்” என்று சொல்லி, அவனுக்கு ‘ஓபேது’ என்று பெயரிட்டார்கள், அவனே தாவீதின் தந்தையான ஈசாயின் தந்தை.

They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger. They do all their deeds to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the market places, and being called rabbi by men. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called masters, for you have one master, the Christ. Now Naʹomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a man of wealth, of the family of Elimʹelech, whose name was Boʹaz. And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naʹomi, “Let me go to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” So she set forth and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers; and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boʹaz, who was of the family of Elimʹelech. Ruth the Moabitess is brought to Bethlehem by Naomi

A reading from the book of Ruth 1:1,3-6,14-16,22 

In the days of the Judges famine came to the land and a certain man from Bethlehem of Judah went – he, his wife and his two sons – to live in the country of Moab. Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died, and she and her two sons were left. These married Moabite women: one was named Orpah and the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died and the woman was bereft of her two sons and her husband. So she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard that the Lord had visited his people and given them food. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and went back to her people. But Ruth clung to her.

  Naomi said to her, ‘Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. You must return too; follow your sister-in-law.’

  But Ruth said, ‘Do not press me to leave you and to turn back from your company, for

‘wherever you go, I will go,

wherever you live, I will live.

Your people shall be my people,

and your God, my God.’

This was how Naomi, she who returned from the country of Moab, came back with Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law. And they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு சதுசேயரை வாயடைக்கச் செய்தார் என்பதைக் கேள்விப்பட்ட பரிசேயர் ஒன்றுகூடி அவரிடம் வந்தனர். அவர்களிடையே இருந்த திருச்சட்ட அறிஞர் ஒருவர் அவரைச் சோதிக்கும் நோக்கத்துடன், “போதகரே, திருச்சட்ட நூலில் தலைசிறந்த கட்டளை எது?” என்று கேட்டார்.

அவர், “ ‘உன் முழு இதயத்தோடும், முழு உள்ளத்தோடும், முழு மனத்தோடும் உன் ஆண்டவராகிய கடவுளிடம் அன்பு செலுத்து.’ இதுவே தலைசிறந்த முதன்மையான கட்டளை. ‘உன்மீது நீ அன்பு கூர்வது போல உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர்மீதும் அன்பு கூர்வாயாக’ என்பது இதற்கு இணையான இரண்டாவது கட்டளை. திருச்சட்ட நூல் முழுமைக்கும் இறைவாக்கு நூல்களுக்கும் இவ்விரு கட்டளைகளே அடிப்படையாக அமைகின்றன” என்று பதிலளித்தார்.
