SECOND READING
"Hoping against all hope, he believed"
Reading from the letter of Saint Paul the apostle to the Romans (4, 13.16-18.22)
Brethren, it was not by virtue of the Law that the promise to receive the world as an inheritance was made to Abraham and his descendants, but by virtue of righteousness obtained by faith. This is why one becomes an heir by faith: it is a grace, and the promise remains firm for all descendants of Abraham, not for those who are connected with the Law only, but for those who also relate to the faith of Abraham. 'Abraham, who is the father of all of us. This is what is written: I have made you the father of many nations. He is our father before God in whom he believed, God who gives life to the dead and who calls into existence what does not exist. Hoping against all hope, he believed; thus became the father of many nations, according to this saying, Such shall be the offspring which thou shalt have!
The Word of the Lord.
