A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew 19:23-30 

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘I tell you solemnly, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Yes, I tell you again, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.’ When the disciples heard this they were astonished. ‘Who can be saved, then?’ they said. Jesus gazed at them. ‘For men’ he told them ‘this is impossible; for God everything is possible.’

  Then Peter spoke. ‘What about us?’ he said to him ‘We have left everything and followed you. What are we to have, then?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I tell you solemnly, when all is made new and the Son of Man sits on his throne of glory, you will yourselves sit on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses, brothers, sisters, father, mother, children or land for the sake of my name will be repaid a hundred times over, and also inherit eternal life.

  ‘Many who are first will be last, and the last, first.’

A reading from the Book of Judges 6: 11-24. 

The angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah which belonged to Joash of Abiezer. Gideon his son was threshing wheat inside the winepress to keep it hidden from Midian, when the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘The Lord is with you, valiant warrior!’ Gideon answered him, ‘Forgive me, my lord, but if the Lord is with us, then why is it that all this is happening to us now? And where are all the wonders our ancestors tell us of when they say, “Did not the Lord bring us out of Egypt?” But now the Lord has deserted us; he has abandoned us to Midian.’

  At this the Lord turned to him and said, ‘Go in the strength now upholding you, and you will rescue Israel from the power of Midian. Do I not send you myself?’ Gideon answered him, ‘Forgive me, my lord, but how can I deliver Israel? My clan, you must know, is the weakest in Manasseh and I am the least important in my family.’ The Lord answered him, ‘I will be with you and you shall crush Midian as though it were a single man.’ Gideon said to him, ‘If I have found favour in your sight, give me a sign that it is you who speak to me. I beg you, do not go away until I come back. I will bring you my offering and set it down before you.’ And he answered, ‘I will stay until you return.’

  Gideon went away and prepared a young goat and made unleavened cakes with an ephah of flour. He put the meat into a basket and the broth into a pot, then brought it all to him under the terebinth. As he came near, the angel of the Lord said to him, ‘Take the meat and unleavened cakes, put them on this rock and pour the broth over them.’ Gideon did so. Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff in his hand and touched the meat and unleavened cakes. Fire sprang from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened cakes, and the angel of the Lord vanished before his eyes. Then Gideon knew this was the angel of the Lord, and he said, ‘Alas, my Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!’ The Lord answered him, ‘Peace be with you; have no fear; you will not die.’ Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it The-Lord-is-Peace.

அக்காலத்தில்

செல்வரான இளைஞர் ஒருவர் இயேசுவிடம் வந்து, “போதகரே, நிலைவாழ்வைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வதற்கு நான் என்ன நன்மை செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு அவரிடம், “நன்மையைப் பற்றி என்னை ஏன் கேட்கிறீர்? நல்லவர் ஒருவரே. நீர் வாழ்வடைய விரும்பினால் கட்டளைகளைக் கடைப்பிடியும்” என்றார்.

அவர், “எவற்றை?” என்று கேட்டார். இயேசு, “கொலை செய்யாதே; விபசாரம் செய்யாதே; களவு செய்யாதே; பொய்ச் சான்று சொல்லாதே; தாய் தந்தையை மதித்து நட. மேலும், உன்மீது நீ அன்பு கூர்வதுபோல் உனக்கு அடுத்திருப்பவர் மீதும் அன்பு கூர்வாயாக” என்று கூறினார்.

அந்த இளைஞர் அவரிடம், “இவை அனைத்தையும் நான் கடைப்பிடித்து வந்துள்ளேன். இன்னும் என்னிடம் குறைபடுவது என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு இயேசு, “நிறைவுள்ளவராக விரும்பினால் நீர் போய், உம் உடைமைகளை விற்று ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடும். அப்பொழுது விண்ணகத்தில் நீர் செல்வராய் இருப்பீர். பின்பு வந்து என்னைப் பின்பற்றும்” என்றார்.

அவர் சொன்னதைக் கேட்ட அந்த இளைஞர் வருத்தத்தோடு சென்றுவிட்டார். ஏனெனில் அவருக்கு ஏராளமான சொத்து இருந்தது.

அந்நாள்களில்

இஸ்ரயேல் மக்கள் ஆண்டவரின் பார்வையில் தீயதெனப் பட்டதைச் செய்தனர். அவர்கள் பாகால்களுக்கு ஊழியம் செய்தனர். அவர்கள் தங்கள் மூதாதையரை எகிப்து நாட்டிலிருந்து வெளியே கொண்டுவந்த தங்கள் மூதாதையரின் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரைக் கைவிட்டனர். தங்களைச் சுற்றி வாழ்ந்த மக்களினங்களின் தெய்வங்களைப் பின்பற்றி, வழிபட்டு, ஆண்டவருக்குச் சினமூட்டினர். அவர்கள் ஆண்டவரைக் கைவிட்டுப் பாகாலுக்கும் அஸ்தரோத்துக்கும் ஊழியம் செய்தனர்.

இஸ்ரயேலின்மேல் ஆண்டவரின் கோபக் கனல் கனன்றது. எனவே, அவர் கொள்ளையடிப்போரிடம் அவர்களை ஒப்படைக்க, அவர்களும் அவர்களைக் கொள்ளையடித்தனர். அவர்களைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்த எதிரிகளிடம் ஆண்டவர் அவர்களை விற்றார். அதனால் அவர்கள் எதிரிகளின் முன், அவர்களால் எதிர்த்து நிற்க இயலாமற் போயிற்று. ஆண்டவர் அவர்களுக்கு ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறியதுபோல், அவர்கள் போருக்குச் சென்றபொழுதெல்லாம், ஆண்டவரின் கை அவர்களுக்கு எதிராகத் தீமை விளைவித்தது. அவர்கள் பெருந்துயரத்துக்கு உள்ளாயினர்.

ஆண்டவர் நீதித் தலைவர்களை எழச் செய்தார். அவர்கள் அவர்களைக் கொள்ளையடித்தவர்களின் கைகளிலிருந்து விடுவித்தனர். ஆயினும் அவர்கள், தங்கள் நீதித் தலைவர்களுக்குச் செவி கொடுக்கவில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவர்கள் வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களைப் பின்பற்றித் தொழுது வேசித்தனம் செய்தனர்; தங்கள் மூதாதையர் ஆண்டவரின் கட்டளைகளுக்குச் செவிகொடுத்து நடந்த நெறியை விட்டு விரைவில் விலகினர்.

ஆண்டவர் அவர்களுக்காக நீதித் தலைவர்களை எழச் செய்த பொழுதெல்லாம் அவர் அந்தத் தலைவர்களுடன் இருந்து, அத்தலைவர்களின் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் எதிரிகளின் கையிலிருந்து மக்களை விடுவித்தார். ஏனெனில் துன்புறுத்தப்பட்டு, ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட அவர்களின் அழுகுரலைக் கேட்டு ஆண்டவர் அவர்கள் மீது இரக்கம் கொண்டார். ஆனால் அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொரு நீதித் தலைவர் இறந்த பொழுதும், வேற்றுத் தெய்வங்களைப் பின்பற்றியும், அவற்றுக்கு ஊழியம் செய்தும், அவற்றை வழிபட்டும், தங்கள் மூதாதையரை விட இழிவாக நடந்தனர். அவர்களுடைய தீய பழக்கங்களையும் முரட்டுத்தனமான நடத்தையையும் விட்டு அகலவில்லை.

ஆண்டவரின் அருள்வாக்கு.

" Why do you ask me about what is good?

He who is good is God, and he alone!

Jesus replied,

" Do not commit murder.

You will not commit adultery.

You will not steal.

You will not bear false witness.

    Honor your father and your mother.

And also:

    The young man said to him:

“I have observed all this:

what do I still lack?

    Jesus answered him,

“If you want to be perfect,

go, sell what you have,

give it to the poor,

    At these words, the young man went away very sad,

for he had great possessions.

With our fathers, we sinned,

we failed and denied.

They will mingle with the pagans,

And the Lord catches fire against his people:

his heirs horrify him.

FIRST LECTURE 

“The Lord raised up judges. But neither did they obey their judges ” 

Reading of the Book of Judges 2, 11-19 

In those days

    the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord,

and they served the Baals.

    They forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers,

who brought them out of the land of Egypt,

and followed other gods

among those of the surrounding peoples.

They bowed down to them

and angered the Lord.

    They forsook the Lord

to serve Baal and Astarte.

    Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.

He delivered them into the hands of the plunderers,

abandoned them to the enemies around them,

and they were unable to resist them.

    In all their expeditions,

the hand of the Lord was against them, to their misfortune,

as he had told them,

as he had sworn.

They were in great distress. 

    So the Lord raised up judges

to save them from the hand of plunderers.

    But neither did they obey their judges.

They prostituted themselves by following other gods,

they bowed down to them.

It was not long before they turned away

from the path where their fathers had walked

, obeying the commandments of the Lord;

they did not act like them.

    When the Lord raised up a judge for them,

the Lord was with the judge,

and he saved them out of the hand of their enemies

as long as the judge was alive;

for the Lord allowed himself to be moved

when they groaned

under the violence of their oppressors.

    But when the judge was dead, they started again

and pushed the corruption further than their fathers:

they followed other gods,

served them and bowed down to them;

they did not renounce their practices

or their stubborn conduct.

வல்லவராம் கடவுள் எனக்கு அரும்பெரும் செயல்கள் செய்துள்ளார். தாழ்நிலையில் இருப்போரை உயர்த்துகிறார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

மரியா புறப்பட்டு யூதேய மலை நாட்டிலுள்ள ஓர் ஊருக்கு விரைந்து சென்றார். அவர் செக்கரியாவின் வீட்டை அடைந்து எலிசபெத்தை வாழ்த்தினார்.

மரியாவின் வாழ்த்தை எலிசபெத்து கேட்டபொழுது அவர் வயிற்றில் இருந்த குழந்தை மகிழ்ச்சியால் துள்ளிற்று. எலிசபெத்து தூய ஆவியால் முற்றிலும் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டார். அப்போது அவர் உரத்த குரலில்,

“பெண்களுக்குள் நீர் ஆசி பெற்றவர்; உம் வயிற்றில் வளரும் குழந்தையும் ஆசி பெற்றதே! என் ஆண்டவரின் தாய் என்னிடம் வர நான் யார்? உம் வாழ்த்துரை என் காதில் விழுந்ததும் என் வயிற்றினுள்ளே குழந்தை பேருவகையால் துள்ளிற்று. ஆண்டவர் உமக்குச் சொன்னவை நிறைவேறும் என்று நம்பிய நீர் பேறுபெற்றவர்” என்றார்.

அதைக் கேட்ட மரியா பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்:

“ஆண்டவரை எனது உள்ளம் போற்றிப் பெருமைப்படுத்துகின்றது. என் மீட்பராம் கடவுளை நினைத்து எனது மனம் பேருவகை கொள்கின்றது. ஏனெனில் அவர் தம் அடிமையின் தாழ்நிலையைக் கண்ணோக்கினார். இதுமுதல் எல்லாத் தலைமுறையினரும் என்னைப் பேறுபெற்றவர் என்பர். ஏனெனில் வல்லவராம் கடவுள் எனக்கு அரும்பெரும் செயல்கள் செய்துள்ளார். தூயவர் என்பதே அவரது பெயர். அவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்போருக்குத் தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாய் அவர் இரக்கம் காட்டி வருகிறார்.

அவர் தம் தோள்வலிமையைக் காட்டியுள்ளார்; உள்ளத்தில் செருக்குடன் சிந்திப்போரைச் சிதறடித்து வருகிறார். வலியோரை அரியணையினின்று தூக்கி எறிந்துள்ளார்; தாழ்நிலையில் இருப்போரை உயர்த்துகிறார். பசித்தோரை நலன்களால் நிரப்பியுள்ளார்; செல்வரை வெறுங்கையராய் அனுப்பிவிடுகிறார். மூதாதையருக்கு உரைத்தபடியே அவர் ஆபிரகாமையும் அவர்தம் வழிமரபினரையும் என்றென்றும் இரக்கத்தோடு நினைவில் கொண்டுள்ளார்; தம் ஊழியராகிய இஸ்ரயேலுக்குத் துணையாக இருந்து வருகிறார்.”

மரியா ஏறக்குறைய மூன்று மாதம் எலிசபெத்தோடு தங்கியிருந்த பின்பு தம் வீடு திரும்பினார்.
