உயிர் இல்லாத உடல் போல, செயல் இல்லாத நம்பிக்கையும் செத்ததே.

திருத்தூதர் யாக்கோபு எழுதிய திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 2: 14-24, 26

என் சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே, தம்மிடம் நம்பிக்கை உண்டு எனச் சொல்லும் ஒருவர் அதைச் செயல்களிலே காட்டாவிட்டால், அதனால் பயன் என்ன? அந்த நம்பிக்கை அவரை மீட்க முடியுமா? ஒரு சகோதரன் அல்லது ஒரு சகோதரி போதிய உடையும் அன்றாட உணவும் இல்லாதிருக்கும்போது, அவர்கள் உடலுக்குத் தேவையானவை எவற்றையும் கொடாமல் உங்களுள் ஒருவர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, “நலமே சென்று வாருங்கள்; குளிர்காய்ந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்; பசியாற்றிக்கொள்ளுங்கள்” என்பாரென்றால், அதனால் பயன் என்ன? அதைப் போலவே, நம்பிக்கையும் செயல் வடிவம் பெறாவிட்டால் தன்னிலே உயிரற்றதாய் இருக்கும்.

ஆனால், “ஒருவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை இருப்பதுபோல இன்னொருவரிடம் செயல்கள் இருக்கின்றன” என யாராவது சொல்லலாம். அதற்கு என் பதில்: செயல்கள் இன்றி எவ்வாறு நம்பிக்கை கொண்டிருக்க முடியும் எனக் காட்டுங்கள். நானோ என் செயல்களின் அடிப்படையில் நான் கொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கையை உங்களுக்குக் காட்டுகிறேன். கடவுள் ஒருவரே என்பதை நீங்கள் நம்புகிறீர்கள்; நல்லதுதான். பேய்களுங்கூட அவ்வாறு நம்பி அச்சத்தால் நடுங்குகின்றன. அறிவிலிகளே, செயலற்ற நம்பிக்கை பயனற்றது என நான் எடுத்துக்காட்ட வேண்டுமா? நம் மூதாதையாகிய ஆபிரகாமைப் பாருங்கள். தம் மகன் ஈசாக்கைப் பீடத்தின்மேல் பலிகொடுத்தபோது அவர் செய்த செயல்களினால் அல்லவோ கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவரானார்? அவரது நம்பிக்கையும் செயல்களும் இணைந்து செயல்பட்டன என்றும், செயல்கள் நம்பிக்கையை நிறைவுபெறச் செய்தன என்றும் இதிலிருந்து புலப்படுகிறது அல்லவா? “ஆபிரகாம் ஆண்டவர்மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். அதை ஆண்டவர் அவருக்கு நீதியாகக் கருதினார்” என்னும் மறைநூல் வாக்கு இவ்வாறு நிறைவேறியது. மேலும் அவர் கடவுளின் நண்பர் என்றும் பெயர் பெற்றார்.

எனவே மனிதர் நம்பிக்கையினால் மட்டுமல்ல, செயல்களினாலும் கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்புடையவராகின்றனர் எனத் தெரிகிறது. உயிர் இல்லாத உடல் போல, செயல்கள் இல்லாத நம்பிக்கையும் செத்ததே.

Jesus called the people and his disciples to him and said:

  ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. What gain, then, is it for a man to win the whole world and ruin his life? And indeed what can a man offer in exchange for his life? For if anyone in this adulterous and sinful generation is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’ And he said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.’

A body dies without spirit; faith without good works is not alive

James 2: 14-24, 26 

Take the case, my brothers, of someone who has never done a single good act but claims that he has faith. Will that faith save him? If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on, and one of you says to them, ‘I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty’, without giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that? Faith is like that: if good works do not go with it, it is quite dead.

  This is the way to talk to people of that kind: ‘You say you have faith and I have good deeds; I will prove to you that I have faith by showing you my good deeds – now you prove to me that you have faith without any good deeds to show. You believe in the one God – that is creditable enough, but the demons have the same belief, and they tremble with fear. Do realise, you senseless man, that faith without good deeds is useless. You surely know that Abraham our father was justified by his deed, because he offered his son Isaac on the altar? There you see it: faith and deeds were working together; his faith became perfect by what he did. This is what scripture really means when it says: Abraham put his faith in God, and this was counted as making him justified; and that is why he was called ‘the friend of God.’

  You see now that it is by doing something good, and not only by believing, that a man is justified. A body dies when it is separated from the spirit, and in the same way faith is dead if it is separated from good deeds.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடருடன் பிலிப்புச் செசரியாவைச் சார்ந்த ஊர்களுக்குப் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார். வழியில் அவர் தம் சீடரை நோக்கி, “நான் யார் என மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள் அவரிடம், “சிலர் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் எனவும் வேறு சிலர் எலியா எனவும் மற்றும் சிலர் இறைவாக்கினருள் ஒருவர் எனவும் சொல்கின்றனர்” என்றார்கள். “ஆனால் நீங்கள் நான் யார் எனச் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?” என்று அவர் அவர்களைக் கேட்க, பேதுரு மறுமொழியாக, “நீர் மெசியா” என்று உரைத்தார். தம்மைப்பற்றி எவரிடமும் சொல்ல வேண்டாம் என்று அவர்களிடம் அவர் கண்டிப்பாய்க் கூறினார்.

“மானிட மகன் பலவாறு துன்பப்படவும் மூப்பர்கள், தலைமைக் குருக்கள், மறைநூல் அறிஞர்கள் ஆகியோரால் உதறித் தள்ளப்பட்டுக் கொலை செய்யப்படவும் மூன்று நாள்களுக்குப்பின் உயிர்த்தெழவும் வேண்டும்” என்று இயேசு அவர்களுக்குக் கற்பிக்கத் தொடங்கினார். இதையெல்லாம் அவர் வெளிப்படையாகவே சொன்னார். பேதுரு அவரைத் தனியே அழைத்துக் கடிந்துகொண்டார். ஆனால் இயேசு தம் சீடர்கள் பக்கம் திரும்பிப் பார்த்துப் பேதுருவிடம், “என் கண் முன் நில்லாதே, சாத்தானே. ஏனெனில் நீ கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்றவை பற்றி எண்ணாமல் மனிதருக்கு ஏற்றவை பற்றியே எண்ணுகிறாய்” என்று கடிந்துகொண்டார்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 8: 27-33 

Jesus and his disciples left for the villages round Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say I am?’ And they told him. ‘John the Baptist,’ they said ‘others Elijah; others again, one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he asked ‘who do you say I am?’ Peter spoke up and said to him, ‘You are the Christ.’ And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.

  And he began to teach them that the Son of Man was destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to rise again; and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, ‘Get behind me, Satan! Because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’

God chose the poor but you do not respect them

James 2: 1-9 

My brothers, do not try to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of people. Now suppose a man comes into your synagogue, beautifully dressed and with a gold ring on, and at the same time a poor man comes in, in shabby clothes, and you take notice of the well-dressed man, and say, ‘Come this way to the best seats’; then you tell the poor man, ‘Stand over there’ or ‘You can sit on the floor by my foot-rest.’ Can’t you see that you have used two different standards in your mind, and turned yourselves into judges, and corrupt judges at that?

  Listen, my dear brothers: it was those who are poor according to the world that God chose, to be rich in faith and to be the heirs to the kingdom which he promised to those who love him. In spite of this, you have no respect for anybody who is poor. Isn’t it always the rich who are against you? Isn’t it always their doing when you are dragged before the court? Aren’t they the ones who insult the honourable name to which you have been dedicated? Well, the right thing to do is to keep the supreme law of scripture: you must love your neighbour as yourself; but as soon as you make distinctions between classes of people, you are committing sin, and under condemnation for breaking the Law.
