கொரிந்து நகரில் பவுல் வேலை செய்துவந்தார். ஒவ்வொரு ஓய்வுநாளும் அவர் தொழுகைக்கூடத்தில் பேசினார்.

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுல் ஏதென்சை விட்டு கொரிந்துக்குப் போய்ச் சேர்ந்தார். அங்கே போந்துப் பகுதியில் பிறந்த அக்கிலா என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒரு யூதரையும் அவர் மனைவி பிரிஸ்கில்லாவையும் கண்டு அவர்களிடம் சென்றார். அவர்கள், “யூதர் அனைவரும் உரோமை நகரத்தை விட்டு வெளியேற வேண்டும்” என்ற கிலவுதியு பேரரசருடைய கட்டளைக்கு இணங்கி இத்தாலிய நாட்டைவிட்டு அண்மையில் அங்கு வந்திருந்தார்கள். கூடாரம் செய்வது அவர்களது தொழில். தாமும் அதே தொழிலைச் செய்பவராதலால் பவுல் அவர்களிடம் தங்கி வேலை செய்துவந்தார். ஒவ்வொரு ஓய்வுநாளும் அவர் தொழுகைக் கூடத்தில் யூதரிடமும் கிரேக்கரிடமும் பேசி அவர்கள் நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளச் செய்தார்.

சீலாவும் திமொத்தேயுவும் மாசிதோனியாவிலிருந்து வந்தபோது பவுல் இறைவாக்கை அறிவிப்பதில் ஆர்வத்தோடு ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார்; ‘இயேசுவே மெசியா’ என்று யூதரிடம் சான்று பகர்ந்துவந்தார். அவர்கள் அதனை எதிர்த்துப் பழித்துரைத்தபோது அவர் தமது மேலுடையிலிருந்த தூசியை உதறி, “உங்கள் அழிவுக்கு நீங்களே பொறுப்பு, நான் அல்ல. இனிமேல் நான் பிற இனத்தாரிடம் செல்கிறேன்” என்று கூறினார்;

அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுவிட்டுக் கடவுளை வழிபடும் தீத்துயுஸ்து என்னும் பெயருடைய ஒருவரின் வீட்டுக்குப் போனார். அவரது வீடு தொழுகைக்கூடத்தை அடுத்து இருந்தது. தொழுகைக்கூடத் தலைவரான கிறிஸ்பு என்பவர் தம் வீட்டார் அனைவரோடும் ஆண்டவரிடம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டார். கொரிந்தியருள் பலரும் பவுல் கூறியவற்றைக் கேட்டு நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்றனர்.

Paul lodged with them and worked, and held debates in the synagogues.

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 18:1-8.

Paul left Athens and went to Corinth, where he met a Jew called Aquila whose family came from Pontus. He and his wife Priscilla had recently left Italy because an edict of Claudius had expelled all the Jews from Rome. Paul went to visit them, and when he found they were tentmakers, of the same trade as himself, he lodged with them, and they worked together. Every sabbath he used to hold debates in the synagogues, trying to convert Jews as well as Greeks.

After Silas and Timothy had arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted all his time to preaching, declaring to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ. When they turned against him and started to insult him, he took his cloak and shook it out in front of them, saying, ‘Your blood be on your own heads; from now on I can go to the pagans with a clear conscience.’ Then he left the synagogue and moved to the house next door that belonged to a worshipper of God called Justus. Crispus, president of the synagogue, and his whole household, all became believers in the Lord. A great many Corinthians who had heard him became believers and were baptised.

அந்நாள்களில்

பவுலுடன் சென்றவர்கள் அவரை ஏதென்சு வரை அழைத்துச் சென்றார்கள். சீலாவும் திமொத்தேயுவும் விரைவில் வந்து சேரவேண்டும் என்னும் கட்டளையைப் பவுலிடமிருந்து பெற்றுக்கொண்டு அவர்கள் திரும்பிச் சென்றார்கள்.

அரயோப்பாகு மன்றத்தின் நடுவில் பவுல் எழுந்து நின்று கூறியது: “ஏதென்சு நகர மக்களே, நீங்கள் மிகுந்த சமயப் பற்றுள்ளவர்கள் என்பதை நான் காண்கிறேன். நான் உங்களுடைய தொழுகையிடங்களை உற்றுப் பார்த்துக்கொண்டு வந்தபோது ‘அறியாத தெய்வத்துக்கு’ என்று எழுதப்பட்டிருந்த பலிபீடம் ஒன்றைக் கண்டேன். நீங்கள் அறியாமல் வழிபட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் அந்தத் தெய்வத்தையே நான் உங்களுக்கு அறிவிக்கிறேன்.

உலகையும், அதிலுள்ள அனைத்தையும் படைத்த கடவுள் விண்ணுக்கும் மண்ணுக்கும் ஆண்டவர். மனிதர் கையால் கட்டிய திருக்கோவில்களில் அவர் குடியிருப்பதில்லை. அனைவருக்கும் உயிரையும் மூச்சையும் மற்றனைத்தையும் கொடுப்பவர் அவரே. எனவே மனிதர் கையால் செய்யும் ஊழியம் எதுவும் அவருக்குத் தேவையில்லை. ஒரே ஆளிலிருந்து அவர் மக்களினம் அனைத்தையும் படைத்து அவர்களை மண்ணுலகின்மீது குடியிருக்கச் செய்தார்; அவர்களுக்குக் குறிப்பிட்ட காலங்களையும் குடியிருக்கும் எல்லைகளையும் வரையறுத்துக் கொடுத்தார். கடவுள் தம்மை அவர்கள் தேடவேண்டும் என்பதற்காக இப்படிச் செய்தார்; தட்டித் தடவியாவது தம்மைக் கண்டுகொள்ள வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே இவ்வாறு செய்தார். ஏனெனில் அவர் நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அருகிலேயே உள்ளார். அவரைச் சார்ந்துதான் நாம் வாழ்கின்றோம், இயங்குகின்றோம், இருக்கின்றோம். உங்கள் கவிஞர் சிலர் கூறுவதுபோல, ‘நாம் அவருடைய பிள்ளைகளே.’

நாம் கடவுளுடைய பிள்ளைகளாய் இருப்பதால், மனிதக் கற்பனையாலும் சிற்ப வேலைத் திறமையாலும் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட பொன், வெள்ளி, கல் உருவங்களைப்போலக் கடவுள் இருப்பார் என நாம் எண்ணுவது முறையாகாது. ஏனெனில் மக்கள் அறியாமையில் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் கடவுள் இதனைப் பொருட்படுத்தவில்லை. ஆனால் இப்போது எங்குமுள்ள மக்கள் யாவரும் மனம் மாற வேண்டும் என்று அவர் கட்டளையிடுகிறார். ஏனென்றால் ஒரு நாள் வரும். அப்போது தாம் நியமித்த ஒருவரைக் கொண்டு அவர் உலகத்துக்கு நேர்மையான தீர்ப்பு அளிப்பார். இறந்த அவரை உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்ததன் வாயிலாக இந்நம்பிக்கை உறுதியானது என எல்லாருக்கும் தெளிவுபடுத்தினார்.”

‘இறந்தவர் உயிர்த்தெழுதல்’ என்பது பற்றிக் கேட்டதும் சிலர் அவரைக் கிண்டல் செய்தனர். மற்றவர்கள், “இதைப்பற்றி நீர் மீண்டும் வந்து பேசும்; கேட்போம்” என்றார்கள். அதன்பின் பவுல் அவர்கள் நடுவிலிருந்து வெளியே சென்றார். சிலர் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு அவர்களுடன் சேர்ந்துகொண்டனர். அவர்களுள் அரயோபாகு மன்றத்தின் உறுப்பினரான தியோனிசியுவும் தாமரி என்னும் பெண் ஒருவரும் வேறு சிலரும் அடங்குவர். இவற்றுக்குப் பின்பு பவுல் ஏதென்சை விட்டுக் கொரிந்துக்குப் போய்ச் சேர்ந்தார்.

I proclaim the God you already worship without knowing it

A Reading from the Acts of Apostles 17: 15,22-18:1 

Paul’s escort took him as far as Athens, and went back with instructions for Silas and Timothy to rejoin Paul as soon as they could.

  So Paul stood before the whole Council of the Areopagus and made this speech:

  ‘Men of Athens, I have seen for myself how extremely scrupulous you are in all religious matters, because I noticed, as I strolled round admiring your sacred monuments, that you had an altar inscribed: To An Unknown God. Well, the God whom I proclaim is in fact the one whom you already worship without knowing it.

  ‘Since the God who made the world and everything in it is himself Lord of heaven and earth, he does not make his home in shrines made by human hands. Nor is he dependent on anything that human hands can do for him, since he can never be in need of anything; on the contrary, it is he who gives everything – including life and breath – to everyone. From one single stock he not only created the whole human race so that they could occupy the entire earth, but he decreed how long each nation should flourish and what the boundaries of its territory should be. And he did this so that all nations might seek the deity and, by feeling their way towards him, succeed in finding him. Yet in fact he is not far from any of us, since it is in him that we live, and move, and exist, as indeed some of your own writers have said:

“We are all his children.”

‘Since we are the children of God, we have no excuse for thinking that the deity looks like anything in gold, silver or stone that has been carved and designed by a man.

  ‘God overlooked that sort of thing when men were ignorant, but now he is telling everyone everywhere that they must repent, because he has fixed a day when the whole world will be judged, and judged in righteousness, and he has appointed a man to be the judge. And God has publicly proved this by raising this man from the dead.’

  At this mention of rising from the dead, some of them burst out laughing; others said, ‘We would like to hear you talk about this again.’ After that Paul left them, but there were some who attached themselves to him and became believers, among them Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman called Damaris, and others besides.

  After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.
