His robe was white as snow

A Reading from the Book of Daniel 7: 9-10,13-14 

As I watched:

Thrones were set in place

and one of great age took his seat.

His robe was white as snow,

the hair of his head as pure as wool.

His throne was a blaze of flames,

its wheels were a burning fire.

A stream of fire poured out,

issuing from his presence.

A thousand thousand waited on him,

ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

A court was held

and the books were opened.

I gazed into the visions of the night.

And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven,

one like a son of man.

He came to the one of great age

and was led into his presence.

On him was conferred sovereignty,

glory and kingship,

and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants.

His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty

which shall never pass away,

nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு தம் சீடரைப் பார்த்து, “என்னைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பும் எவரும் தன்னலம் துறந்து, தம் சிலுவையைத் தூக்கிக்கொண்டு என்னைப் பின்பற்றட்டும். ஏனெனில் தம் உயிரைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள விரும்பும் எவரும் அதை இழந்துவிடுவர். மாறாக, என் பொருட்டுத் தம்மையே அழித்துக் கொள்கிற எவரும் வாழ்வடைவர். மனிதர் உலகம் முழுவதையும் ஆதாயமாக்கிக் கொண்டாலும் தம் வாழ்வையே இழப்பாரெனில் அவருக்குக் கிடைக்கும் பயன் என்ன? அவர் தம் வாழ்வுக்கு ஈடாக எதைக் கொடுப்பார்?

மானிட மகன் தம் தந்தையின் மாட்சியோடு தம் வானதூதர்களுடன் வரப்போகிறார்; அப்பொழுது ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அவரவர் செயலுக்கு ஏற்பக் கைம்மாறு அளிப்பார். நான் உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: இங்கே இருப்பவருள் சிலர் மானிட மகனது ஆட்சி வருவதைக் காண்பதற்கு முன் சாகமாட்டார்” என்றார்.

‘வெற்றி! வெற்றி!’ என்று முழங்கி நற்செய்தி அறிவிப்பவனின் கால்கள் மலைகளின்மேல் தென்படுகின்றன! யூதாவே, உன் திருவிழாக்களைக் கொண்டாடு! உன் பொருத்தனைகளை நிறைவேற்று! ஏனெனில், தீயவன் உன் நடுவில் இனி வரவே மாட்டான்; அவன் முற்றிலும் அழிந்துவிட்டான்.

இஸ்ரயேலின் மேன்மை போலவே யாக்கோபின் மேன்மையை ஆண்டவர் மீண்டும் நிலைநாட்டுகின்றார்; கொள்ளைக்காரர்கள் அவர்களைக் கொள்ளையடித்தனர்; அவர்களின் திராட்சைக் கொடிகளையும் அழித்துப் போட்டனர்.

இரத்தக் கறை படிந்த நகருக்கு ஐயோ கேடு! அங்கு நிறைந்திருப்பது எல்லாம் பொய்களும் கொள்ளைப் பொருளுமே! சூறையாடலுக்கு முடிவே இல்லை! சாட்டையடிகளின் ஓசை! சக்கரங்களின் கிறிச்சிடும் ஒலி! தாவிப் பாயும் புரவிகள்! உருண்டோடும் தேர்கள்! குதிரை வீரர்கள் பாய்ந்து தாக்குகின்றனர்; வாள் மின்னுகின்றது; ஈட்டி பளபளக்கின்றது; வெட்டுண்டவர்கள் கூட்டமாய்க் கிடக்கின்றனர்; பிணங்கள் குவிந்து கிடக்கின்றன; செத்தவர்களுக்குக் கணக்கே இல்லை; அந்தப் பிணங்கள் மேல் மனிதர் இடறி விழுகின்றனர்.

அருவருப்பானவற்றை உன்மீது எறிவேன்; உன்னை இகழ்ச்சியுடன் நடத்திப் பகடிப் பொருள் ஆக்குவேன். உன்னை நோக்குவோர் எல்லாரும் உன்னிடமிருந்து பின்வாங்கி, ‘நினிவே பாழாய்ப் போனது; அவளுக்காகப் புலம்புவோர் யாரேனும் உண்டோ?’ என்று சொல்வார்கள்; உன்னைத் தேற்றுவோரை எங்கே தேடுவேன்?

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 16: 24-28 

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life? Or what has a man to offer in exchange for his life?

  ‘For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and, when he does, he will reward each one according to his behaviour. I tell you solemnly, there are some of these standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom.’

A Reading from the Book of Nahum 2: 1,3,3:1-3,6-7 

See, over the mountains the messenger hurries!

‘Peace!’ he proclaims.

Judah, celebrate your feasts,

carry out your vows,

for Belial will never pass through you again;

he is utterly annihilated.

Yes, the Lord is restoring the vineyard of Jacob

and the vineyard of Israel.

For the plunderers had plundered them,

they had broken off their branches.

Woe to the city soaked in blood,

full of lies,

stuffed with booty,

whose plunderings know no end!

The crack of the whip!

The rumble of wheels!

Galloping horse,

jolting chariot,

charging cavalry,

flash of swords,

gleam of spears...

a mass of wounded,

hosts of dead,

countless corpses;

they stumble over the dead.

I am going to pelt you with filth,

shame you, make you a public show.

And all who look on you will turn their backs on you and say,

‘Nineveh is a ruin.’

Could anyone pity her?

Where can I find anyone to comfort her?

அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசு, பிலிப்புச் செசரியா பகுதிக்குச் சென்றார். அவர் தம் சீடரை நோக்கி, “மானிட மகன் யாரென்று மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?” என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அவர்கள், “சிலர் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் எனவும் வேறு சிலர் எலியா எனவும் மற்றும் சிலர் எரேமியா அல்லது பிற இறைவாக்கினருள் ஒருவர் என்றும் சொல்கின்றனர்” என்றார்கள்.

“ஆனால் நீங்கள், நான் யார் எனச் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?” என்று அவர் கேட்டார். சீமோன் பேதுரு மறுமொழியாக, “நீர் மெசியா, வாழும் கடவுளின் மகன்” என்று உரைத்தார்.

அதற்கு இயேசு, “யோனாவின் மகனான சீமோனே, நீ பேறுபெற்றவன். ஏனெனில் எந்த மனிதரும் இதை உனக்கு வெளிப்படுத்தவில்லை; மாறாக விண்ணகத்திலுள்ள என் தந்தையே வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். எனவே நான் உனக்குக் கூறுகிறேன்: உன் பெயர் பேதுரு; இந்தப் பாறையின் மேல் என் திருச்சபையைக் கட்டுவேன். பாதாளத்தின் வாயில்கள் அதன்மேல் வெற்றிகொள்ளா. விண்ணரசின் திறவுகோல்களை நான் உன்னிடம் தருவேன். மண்ணுலகில் நீ தடைசெய்வது விண்ணுலகிலும் தடை செய்யப்படும். மண்ணுலகில் நீ அனுமதிப்பது விண்ணுலகிலும் அனுமதிக்கப்படும்” என்றார்.

பின்னர், தாம் மெசியா என்பதை எவரிடமும் சொல்ல வேண்டாம் என்று இயேசு சீடரிடம் கண்டிப்பாய்க் கூறினார்.

இயேசு தாம் எருசலேமுக்குப் போய் மூப்பர்கள், தலைமைக் குருக்கள், மறைநூல் அறிஞர்கள் ஆகியோரால் பலவாறு துன்பப்படவும் கொலை செய்யப்படவும் மூன்றாம் நாள் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்படவும் வேண்டும் என்பதைத் தம் சீடருக்கு அந்நேரம் முதல் எடுத்துரைக்கத் தொடங்கினார்.

பேதுரு அவரைத் தனியே அழைத்துக் கடிந்து கொண்டு, “ஆண்டவரே, இது வேண்டாம். இப்படி உமக்கு நடக்கவே கூடாது” என்றார். ஆனால் இயேசு பேதுருவைத் திரும்பிப் பார்த்து, “என் கண்முன் நில்லாதே சாத்தானே, நீ எனக்குத் தடையாய் இருக்கிறாய்; ஏனெனில் நீ கடவுளுக்கு ஏற்றவை பற்றி எண்ணாமல் மனிதருக்கு ஏற்றவை பற்றியே எண்ணுகிறாய்” என்றார்.
