No-one has come back to praise God, only this foreigner

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 17:11-19 

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered one of the villages, ten lepers came to meet him. They stood some way off and called to him, ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us.’ When he saw them he said, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’ And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’

A Reading from the Second Letter of St.Paul to Timothy 2:8-13 

Remember the Good News that I carry, ‘Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David’; it is on account of this that I have my own hardships to bear, even to being chained like a criminal – but they cannot chain up God’s news. So I bear it all for the sake of those who are chosen, so that in the end they may have the salvation that is in Christ Jesus and the eternal glory that comes with it.

  Here is a saying that you can rely on:

If we have died with him, then we shall live with him.

If we hold firm, then we shall reign with him.

If we disown him, then he will disown us.

We may be unfaithful, but he is always faithful,

for he cannot disown his own self.

Naaman the leper returned to Elisha and acknowledged the Lord

2 Kings 5:14-17 

Naaman the leper went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, as Elisha had told him to do. And his flesh became clean once more like the flesh of a little child.

  Returning to Elisha with his whole escort, he went in and stood before him. ‘Now I know’ he said ‘that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel. Now, please, accept a present from your servant.’

  But Elisha replied, ‘As the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will accept nothing.’ Naaman pressed him to accept, but he refused.

  Then Naaman said, ‘Since your answer is “No,” allow your servant to be given as much earth as two mules may carry, because your servant will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice to any god except the Lord.’

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் மீது நம்பிக்கை கொள்வோருக்கு வாக்களிக்கப் பட்டவை நம்பிக்கையால் கிடைக்கவேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே அனைத்தும் பாவத்தின் கட்டுப்பாட்டுக்கு உட்பட்டுள்ளது என மறைநூல் கூறுகிறது.

நாம் நம்பிக்கை கொள்வதற்கு முன் சட்டத்தின் ஆட்சிக்கு உட்பட்டுக் காவலில் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தோம். வெளிப்பட இருந்த அந்த நம்பிக்கையை நாம் பெறும்வரை இந்நிலை நீடித்தது. இவ்வாறு, நம்பிக்கையின் அடிப்படையில் நாம் இறைவனுக்கு ஏற்புடையவர் ஆக்கப்படுவதற்காக நம்மைக் கிறிஸ்துவிடம் கூட்டிச்செல்லும் வழித்துணையாய்த் திருச்சட்டம் செயல்பட்டது. இப்பொழுது நாம் நம்பிக்கை கொண்டுள்ளதால் இனி நாம் வழித்துணைவரின் பொறுப்பில் இல்லை. ஏனெனில், கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவின் மீது கொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கையால் நீங்கள் அனைவரும் கடவுளின் மக்களாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்.

அவ்வாறெனில், கிறிஸ்துவோடு இணைந்திருக்கும்படி திருமுழுக்குப் பெற்ற நீங்கள் அனைவரும் கிறிஸ்துவை அணிந்துகொண்டீர்கள். இனி உங்களிடையே யூதர் என்றும் கிரேக்கர் என்றும், அடிமைகள் என்றும் உரிமைக் குடிமக்கள் என்றும் இல்லை; ஆண் என்றும் பெண் என்றும் வேறுபாடு இல்லை; கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவோடு இணைந்துள்ள நீங்கள் யாவரும் ஒன்றாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள். நீங்கள் கிறிஸ்துவைச் சார்ந்தவர்களும் ஆபிரகாமின் வழித்தோன்றல்களுமாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள். வாக்குறுதியின் அடிப்படையில் உரிமைப்பேறு உடையவர்களாயும் இருக்கிறீர்கள்.

There are no more distinctions: all are one in Christ Jesus

A Reading from the Letter of St.Paul to Galatians 3:22-29 

Scripture makes no exceptions when it says that sin is master everywhere. In this way the promise can only be given through faith in Jesus Christ and can only be given to those who have this faith.

  Before faith came, we were allowed no freedom by the Law; we were being looked after till faith was revealed. The Law was to be our guardian until the Christ came and we could be justified by faith. Now that that time has come we are no longer under that guardian, and you are, all of you, sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. All baptised in Christ, you have all clothed yourselves in Christ, and there are no more distinctions between Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, but all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Merely by belonging to Christ you are the posterity of Abraham, the heirs he was promised.
