The harvest is rich but the labourers are few

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 9:36-10:8 

When Jesus saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest.’

  He summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness.

  These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, the one who was to betray him. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows:

  ‘Do not turn your steps to pagan territory, and do not enter any Samaritan town; go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. You received without charge, give without charge.’

Now we have been reconciled by the death of his Son, surely we may count on being saved by the life of his Son.

A Reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Romans 5:6-11

We were still helpless when at his appointed moment Christ died for sinful men. It is not easy to die even for a good man – though of course for someone really worthy, a man might be prepared to die – but what proves that God loves us is that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Having died to make us righteous, is it likely that he would now fail to save us from God’s anger? When we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, we were still enemies; now that we have been reconciled, surely we may count on being saved by the life of his Son? Not merely because we have been reconciled but because we are filled with joyful trust in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have already gained our reconciliation.

From Rephidim the sons of Israel set out again; and when they reached the wilderness of Sinai, there in the wilderness they pitched their camp; there facing the mountain Israel pitched camp.

  Moses then went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, ‘Say this to the House of Jacob, declare this to the sons of Israel, “You yourselves have seen what I did with the Egyptians, how I carried you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself. From this you know that now, if you obey my voice and hold fast to my covenant, you of all the nations shall be my very own for all the earth is mine. ஆண்டுதோறும் இயேசுவின் பெற்றோர் பாஸ்கா விழாவைக் கொண்டாட எருசலேமுக்குப் போவார்கள்; இயேசுவுக்குப் பன்னிரண்டு வயது ஆனபோது, வழக்கப்படி விழாவைக் கொண்டாட எருசலேம் சென்றனர். விழா நாள்கள் முடிந்து அவர்கள் திரும்பியபோது, சிறுவன் இயேசு எருசலேமில் தங்கிவிட்டார். இது அவருடைய பெற்றோருக்குத் தெரியாது; பயணிகள் கூட்டத்தில் அவர் இருப்பார் என்று எண்ணினர். ஒருநாள் பயணம் முடிந்தபின்பு உறவினரிடையேயும் அறிமுகமானவர்களிடையேயும் அவரைத் தேடினர்; அவரைக் காணாததால் அவரைத் தேடிக்கொண்டு எருசலேமுக்குத் திரும்பிச் சென்றார்கள்.

பின்பு அவர் அவர்களுடன் சென்று நாசரேத்தை அடைந்து அவர்களுக்குப் பணிந்து நடந்தார். அவருடைய தாய் இந்நிகழ்ச்சிகளையெல்லாம் தமது உள்ளத்தில் பதித்து வைத்திருந்தார்.

பாவம் அறியாத கிறிஸ்துவைப் பாவநிலை ஏற்கச் செய்தார்.

திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கொரிந்தியருக்கு எழுதிய இரண்டாம் திருமுகத்திலிருந்து வாசகம் 5: 14-21

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

கிறிஸ்துவின் பேரன்பே எங்களை ஆட்கொள்கிறது. ஏனெனில் ஒருவர் அனைவருக்காகவும் இறந்தார். அனைவரும் அவரோடு இறந்தனர். இது நமக்குத் தெரியும். வாழ்வோர் இனி தங்களுக்கென வாழாமல் தங்களுக்காக இறந்து உயிர்பெற்றெழுந்தவருக்காக வாழ வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகவே அவர் அனைவருக்காகவும் இறந்தார்.

ஆகவே இனிமேல் நாங்கள் எவரையும் மனித முறைப்படி மதிப்பிடுவது இல்லை; முன்பு நாங்கள் கிறிஸ்துவையும் மனித முறைப்படிதான் மதிப்பிட்டோம். ஆனால் இப்போது அவ்வாறு செய்வதில்லை. எனவே ஒருவர் கிறிஸ்துவோடு இணைந்திருக்கும்போது அவர் புதிதாகப் படைக்கப் பட்டவராய் இருக்கிறார். பழையன கழிந்து புதியன புகுந்தன அன்றோ!

இவை யாவும் கடவுளின் செயலே. அவரே கிறிஸ்துவின் வாயிலாக நம்மைத் தம்மோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கினார்; ஒப்புரவாக்கும் திருப்பணியையும் நமக்குத் தந்துள்ளார். உலகினரின் குற்றங்களைப் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் கடவுள் கிறிஸ்துவின் வாயிலாக அவர்களைத் தம்மோடு ஒப்புரவாக்கினார். அந்த ஒப்புரவுச் செய்தியை எங்களிடம் ஒப்படைத்தார். எனவே நாங்கள் கிறிஸ்துவின் தூதுவர்களாய் இருக்கிறோம். கடவுளே எங்கள் வாயிலாக வேண்டுகோள் விடுக்கிறார். ஆகவே கடவுளோடு ஒப்புரவாகுங்கள் என்று கிறிஸ்துவின் சார்பில் நாங்கள் மன்றாடுகிறோம். நாம் கிறிஸ்து வழியாகத் தமக்கு ஏற்புடையவராகுமாறு கடவுள் பாவம் அறியாத அவரைப் பாவநிலை ஏற்கச் செய்தார்.

“His mother treasured all these events in her heart” (Lk 2, 41-51)

Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

          Every year Jesus' parents traveled to Jerusalem

for the Passover feast.

  When he was twelve years old,

they went on pilgrimage according to custom.

  At the end of the feast, as they were returning,

the young Jesus remained in Jerusalem

without the knowledge of his parents.

  Thinking he was in the procession of pilgrims,

they traveled a day

before looking for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

  Not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem,

continuing to search for him.

          It was at the end of three days that they found him in the Temple,

seated in the midst of the doctors of the Law:

he listened to them and asked them questions,

  and all those who heard him

were ecstatic over his intelligence and his answers.

  Seeing him, his parents were struck with astonishment,

and his mother said to him,

“My child, why have you done this to us?

See how your father and

I have suffered looking for you!

  He said to them,

"How come you looked for me? "

Did you not know

that I must be with my Father? But

  they did not understand what he was saying to them.

          He went down with them to go to Nazareth,

and he was subject to them.

His mother kept all these events in her heart.

          – Let us acclaim the Word of God.

"He who knew no sin, God has identified him with sin for us" (2 Cor 5, 14-21)

Reading of the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

Brethren,

    the love of Christ seizes us

when we think that one died for all,

and thus all passed through death.

    For Christ died for all,

so that the living would no longer have their lives centered on themselves,

but on him, who died and rose again for them.

    Henceforth we no longer look at anyone

in a simply human way:

if we knew Christ in this way,

now we no longer know him in this way.

    If therefore anyone is in Christ,

he is a new creature.

The old world is gone,

a new world is already born

    All this comes from God:

he has reconciled us to himself through Christ,

and he has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

    For it is indeed God

who, in Christ, reconciled the world to himself:

he did not take faults into account,

and he placed in us the word of reconciliation.

    We are therefore Christ's ambassadors,

and through us it is God himself who launches an appeal:

we ask it in the name of Christ,

let yourselves be reconciled with God.

    He who knew no sin,

God identified him with sin for us,

so that in him we might become righteous

with the very justice of God.
