_The birth of John the Baptist is foretold._ 

*A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to saint Luke 1:5-25* 

In the days of King Herod of Judaea there lived a priest called Zechariah who belonged to the Abijah section of the priesthood, and he had a wife, Elizabeth by name, who was a descendant of Aaron.

Both were upright in the sight of God and impeccably carried out all the commandments and observances of the Lord.

But they were childless: Elizabeth was barren and they were both advanced in years.

Now it happened that it was the turn of his section to serve, and he was exercising his priestly office before God

when it fell to him by lot, as the priestly custom was, to enter the Lord's sanctuary and burn incense there.

And at the hour of incense all the people were outside, praying.

Then there appeared to him the angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense.

The sight disturbed Zechariah and he was overcome with fear.

But the angel said to him, 'Zechariah, do not be afraid, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth is to bear you a son and you shall name him John.

He will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth,

for he will be great in the sight of the Lord; he must drink no wine, no strong drink; even from his mother's womb he will be filled with the Holy Spirit,

and he will bring back many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.

With the spirit and power of Elijah, he will go before him to reconcile fathers to their children and the disobedient to the good sense of the upright, preparing for the Lord a people fit for him.'

Zechariah said to the angel, 'How can I know this? I am an old man and my wife is getting on in years.'

The angel replied, 'I am Gabriel, who stand in God's presence, and I have been sent to speak to you and bring you this good news.

Look! Since you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time, you will be silenced and have no power of speech until this has happened.'

Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he stayed in the sanctuary so long.

When he came out he could not speak to them, and they realised that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. But he could only make signs to them and remained dumb.

When his time of service came to an end he returned home.

Some time later his wife Elizabeth conceived and for five months she kept to herself, saying,

'The Lord has done this for me, now that it has pleased him to take away the humiliation I suffered in public.'

There was a man of Zorah of the tribe of Dan, called Manoah. His wife was barren; she had borne no children.

The Angel of Yahweh appeared to this woman and said to her, 'You are barren and have had no child, but you are going to conceive and give birth to a son.

From now on, take great care. Drink no wine or fermented liquor, and eat nothing unclean.

For you are going to conceive and give birth to a son. No razor is to touch his head, for the boy is to be God's nazirite from his mother's womb; and he will start rescuing Israel from the power of the Philistines.'

The woman then went and told her husband, 'A man of God has just come to me, who looked like the Angel of God, so majestic was he. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name.

But he said to me, "You are going to conceive and will give birth to a son. From now on, drink no wine or fermented liquor, and eat nothing unclean. For the boy is to be God's nazirite from his mother's womb to his dying day." '

The woman gave birth to a son and called him Samson. The child grew, and Yahweh blessed him;

and the spirit of Yahweh began to stir him in the Camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol

யூதேய நாட்டில் ஏரோது அரசனாக இருந்த காலத்தில், அபியா வகுப்பைச் சேர்ந்த செக்கரியா என்னும் பெயர் கொண்ட குரு ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் மனைவி ஆரோனின் வழி வந்தவர்; அவர் பெயர் எலிசபெத்து. அவர்கள் இருவரும் கடவுள் பார்வையில் நேர்மையானவர்களாய் விளங்கினார்கள். ஆண்டவருடைய அனைத்துக் கட்டளைகளுக்கும் ஒழுங்குகளுக்கும் ஏற்பக் குற்றமற்றவர்களாய் நடந்து வந்தார்கள். அவர்களுக்குப் பிள்ளை இல்லை; ஏனெனில், எலிசபெத்து கருவுற இயலாதவராய் இருந்தார். மேலும் அவர்கள் வயது முதிர்ந்தவர்களாயும் இருந்தார்கள். தம்முடைய பிரிவின்முறை வந்தபோது, செக்கரியா கடவுளின் திருமுன் குருத்துவப் பணி ஆற்றி வந்தார். குருத்துவப் பணி மரபுக்கு ஏற்ப, ஆண்டவரின் திருக்கோவிலுக்குள் சென்று தூபம் காட்டுவது யாரென்று அறியச் சீட்டுக் குலுக்கிப் போட்டபோது அது செக்கரியா பெயருக்கு விழுந்தது. அவர் தூபம் காட்டுகிற வேளையில், மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினர் அனைவரும் வெளியே இறைவனிடம் வேண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். அப்பொழுது ஆண்டவருடைய தூதர் ஒருவர் தூப பீடத்தின் வலப்பக்கத்தில் நின்றவாறு அவருக்குத் தோன்றினார். அவரைக் கண்டு செக்கரியா அச்சமுற்றுக் கலங்கினார். வானதூதர் அவரை நோக்கி, செக்கரியா, அஞ்சாதீர், உமது மன்றாட்டு கேட்கப்பட்டது. உம் மனைவி எலிசபெத்து உமக்கு ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுப்பார்; அவருக்கு யோவான் எனப் பெயரிடுவீர். நீர் மகிழ்ந்து பேருவகை கொள்வீர். அவரது பிறப்பால் பலரும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைவர். அவர் ஆண்டவர் பார்வையில் பெரியவராய் இருப்பார்; திராட்சை மதுவோ வேறு எந்த மதுவோ அருந்தமாட்டார்; தாய் வயிற்றிலிருக்கும்போதே தூய ஆவியால் முற்றிலும் ஆட்கொள்ளப் படுவார். அவர், இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுள் பலரைத் தம் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரிடம் திரும்பி வரச் செய்வார். எலியாவின் உளப்பாங்கையும் வல்லமையையும் உடையவராய் அவருக்கு முன் செல்வார்; தந்தையரும் மக்களும் உளம் ஒத்துப்போகச் செய்வார்; நேர்மையாளர்களின் மனநிலையைக் கீழ்ப்படியாதவர்கள் பெறச் செய்வார்; இவ்வாறு ஆண்டவருக்கு ஏற்புடைய ஒரு மக்களினத்தை ஆயத்தம் செய்வார்'' என்றார். செக்கரியா வானதூதரிடம், இது நடைபெறும் என எனக்கு எப்படித் தெரியும்? நான் வயதானவன். அதுபோல் என் மனைவியும் வயது முதிர்ந்தவராயிற்றே'' என்றார். அதற்கு வானதூதர் அவரிடம், நான் கபிரியேல்; கடவுளின் திருமுன் நிற்பவன்; உம்மோடு பேசவும் இந்த நற்செய்தியை உமக்கு அறிவிக்கவும் அனுப்பப்பட்டேன். இதோ பாரும், உரிய காலத்தில் நிறைவேற இருக்கும் என்னுடைய வார்த்தைகளை நீர் நம்பவில்லை. ஆதலால் அவை நிறைவேறும் வரை நீர் பேச்சற்றவராய் இருப்பீர்; உம்மால் பேசவே இயலாது'' என்றார். மக்கள் செக்கரியாவுக்காகக் காத்திருந்தனர். திருக்கோவிலில் அவர் காலந்தாழ்த்துவதைக் குறித்து அவர்கள் வியப்படைந்தார்கள். அவர் வெளியே வந்தபோது அவர்களிடம் பேசமுடியாமல் இருந்தார். ஆதலால் அவர் திருக்கோவிலில் ஏதோ காட்சி கண்டிருக்க வேண்டும் என அவர்கள் உணர்ந்துகொண்டார்கள். அவர் அவர்களிடம் சைகைகள் வாயிலாக உரையாடி வந்தார்; பேச்சற்றே இருந்தார். அவருடைய திருப்பணிக் காலம் முடிந்ததும் அவர் வீடு திரும்பினார். அதற்குப் பின்பு அவர் மனைவி எலிசபெத்து கருவுற்று ஐந்து மாதமளவும் பிறர் கண்ணில் படாதிருந்தார். மக்களுக்குள் எனக்கிருந்த இகழ்ச்சியை நீக்க ஆண்டவர் என்மீது அருள்கூர்ந்து இந்நாளில் இவ்வாறு செய்தருளினார்'' என்று தமக்குள் சொல்லிக்கொண்டார். 

இது கிறிஸ்து வழங்கும் நற்செய்தி.

3 என் அடைக்கலப் பாறையாக நீர் இருந்தருளும்; கோட்டை அரணாயிருந்து என்னை மீட்டருளும்;

சிம்சோனின் பிறப்பு முன்னறிவிக்கப்படுகிறது. 

நீதித்தலைவர்கள் நூலிலிருந்து வாசகம் 13: 2-7, 24-25 

அந்நாள்களில் சோராவைச் சார்ந்தவரும் தாண் குலத்தவருமான ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் பெயர் மனோவாகு. அவர் மனைவி மலடியாய் இருந்ததால், குழந்தை பெறவில்லை. ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அப்பெண்ணுக்குத் தோன்றி அவரிடம், "நீ மலடியாய் இருந்ததால் இதுவரை குழந்தை பெற்றெடுக்கவில்லை. ஆனால், இனி நீ கருவுற்று ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுப்பாய். இப்பொழுது கவனமாயிரு! திராட்சை இரசமோ மதுபானமோ அருந்தாதே! தீட்டான எதையும் உண்ணாதே. ஏனெனில் நீ கருவுற்று ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுப்பாய். சவரக் கத்தி அவன் தலைமீது படக்கூடாது. ஏனெனில் பையன் பிறப்பிலிருந்தே கடவுளுக்கென `நாசீர்' ஆக இருப்பான். அவன் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களைப் பெலிஸ்தியரின் கையிலிருந்து விடுவிக்கத் தொடங்குவான்'' என்றார். அப்பெண் தம் கணவரிடம் வந்து கூறியது: "கடவுளின் மனிதர் என்னிடம் வந்தார். அவரது தோற்றம் கடவுளின் தூதரின் தோற்றம் போல் பெரிதும் அச்சத்திற்குரியதாக இருந்தது. அவர் எங்கிருந்து வந்தவர் என்று நான் அவரைக் கேட்கவில்லை. அவரும் எனக்குத் தம் பெயரை அறிவிக்கவில்லை. அவர் என்னிடம். `இதோ! நீ கருவுற்று ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுப்பாய். ஆகவே நீ திராட்சை இரசமோ மதுபானமோ அருந்தாதே. தீட்டான எதையும் உண்ணாதே. ஏனெனில் பையன் பிறந்த நாள் முதல் இறக்கும் நாள் வரை, கடவுளுக்கென நாசீராக இருப்பான்' என்றார்.'' அப்பெண் ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுத்து அவனுக்குச் சிம்சோன் எனப் பெயரிட்டார். பையன் வளர்ந்து பெரியவனானான். ஆண்டவர் அவனுக்கு ஆசி வழங்கினார். சோராவுக்கும், எசுத்தாவேலுக்குமிடையே அவன் இருக்கும்போதுதான் ஆண்டவரின் ஆவி அவனைத் தூண்டத் தொடங்கியது. 

இது ஆண்டவர் வழங்கும் அருள்வாக்கு.

_How Jesus Christ came to be born_

*A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Matthew 1:18-24*

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph; being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.’ Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son

and they will call him Emmanuel,

a name which means ‘God-is-with-us.’ When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to his home.

See, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks –

when I will raise a virtuous Branch for David,

who will reign as true king and be wise,

practising honesty and integrity in the land.

In his days Judah will be saved

and Israel dwell in confidence.

And this is the name he will be called:

The-Lord-our-integrity.

So, then, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when people will no longer say, “As the Lord lives who brought the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt!” but, “As the Lord lives who led back and brought home the descendants of the House of Israel out of the land of the North and from all the countries to which he had dispersed them, to live on their own soil.”

இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் பிறப்பையொட்டிய நிகழ்ச்சிகள்: 

அவருடைய தாய் மரியாவுக்கும் யோசேப்புக்கும் திருமண ஒப்பந்தம் செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது. அவர்கள் கூடி வாழும் முன் மரியா கருவுற்றிருந்தது தெரிய வந்தது. மரியா தூய ஆவியால் கருவுற்றிருந்தார். மரியாவின் கணவர் யோசேப்பு நேர்மையாளர். அவர் மரியாவை இகழ்ச்சிக்கு உள்ளாக்க விரும்பாமல் மறைவாக விலக்கிவிடத் திட்டமிட்டார். அவர் இவ்வாறு சிந்தித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் அவருக்குக் கனவில் தோன்றி, “யோசேப்பே, தாவீதின் மகனே, உம் மனைவி மரியாவை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள அஞ்ச வேண்டாம். ஏனெனில் அவர் கருவுற்றிருப்பது தூய ஆவியால்தான். மரியா ஒரு மகனைப் பெற்றெடுப்பார். அவருக்கு இயேசு எனப் பெயரிடுவீர். ஏனெனில் அவர் தம் மக்களை அவர்களுடைய பாவங்களிலிருந்து மீட்பார்” என்றார். 

“இதோ! கன்னி கருவுற்று ஓர் ஆண்மகவைப் பெற்றெடுப்பார். அக்குழந்தைக்கு இம்மானுவேல் எனப் பெயரிடுவர்” என்று இறைவாக்கினர் வாயிலாக ஆண்டவர் உரைத்தது நிறைவேறவே இவை யாவும் நிகழ்ந்தன. இம்மானுவேல் என்றால் ‘கடவுள் நம்முடன் இருக்கிறார்’ என்பது பொருள். யோசேப்பு தூக்கத்திலிருந்து விழித்தெழுந்து ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் தமக்குப் பணித்தவாறே தம் மனைவியை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார்.
