அக்காலத்தில்

இயேசுவின் பெயர் எங்கும் பரவியது. ஏரோது அரசனும் அவரைப் பற்றிக் கேள்வியுற்றான். சிலர், “இறந்த திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்பட்டுவிட்டார்; இதனால்தான் இந்த வல்ல செயல்கள் இவரால் ஆற்றப்படுகின்றன” என்றனர். வேறு சிலர், “இவர் எலியா” என்றனர். மற்றும் சிலர், “ஏனைய இறைவாக்கினரைப்போல் இவரும் ஓர் இறைவாக்கினரே” என்றனர். இதைக் கேட்ட ஏரோது, “இவர் யோவானே. அவர் தலையை நான் வெட்டச் செய்தேன். ஆனால் அவர் உயிருடன் எழுப்பப்பட்டுவிட்டார்” என்று கூறினான்.

இதே ஏரோது, தன் சகோதரனான பிலிப்பின் மனைவி ஏரோதியாவை மனைவியாக்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தான்; அவள் பொருட்டு ஆள் அனுப்பி யோவானைப் பிடித்துக் கட்டிச் சிறையில் அடைத்திருந்தான். ஏனெனில் யோவான் ஏரோதிடம், “உம் சகோதரர் மனைவியை நீர் வைத்திருப்பது முறை அல்ல” எனச் சொல்லி வந்தார். அப்போது ஏரோதியா அவர்மீது காழ்ப்புணர்வு கொண்டு, அவரைக் கொலை செய்ய விரும்பினாள்; ஆனால் அவளால் இயலவில்லை. ஏனெனில் யோவான் நேர்மையும் தூய்மையும் உள்ளவர் என்பதை ஏரோது அறிந்து அஞ்சி அவருக்குப் பாதுகாப்பு அளித்துவந்தான். அவர் சொல்லைக் கேட்டுமிகக் குழப்பமுற்ற போதிலும், அவருக்கு மனமுவந்து செவிசாய்த்தான்.

ஒரு நாள் ஏரோதியாவுக்கு நல்ல வாய்ப்பு ஒன்று கிடைத்தது. ஏரோது தன் பிறந்த நாளில் அரசவையினருக்கும், ஆயிரத்தவர் தலைவர்களுக்கும் கலிலேய முதன்மைக் குடிமக்களுக்கும் ஒரு விருந்து படைத்தான். அப்போது ஏரோதியாவின் மகள் உள்ளே வந்து நடனமாடி ஏரோதையும் விருந்தினரையும் அகமகிழச் செய்தாள். அரசன் அச்சிறுமியிடம், “உனக்கு என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் கேள், தருகிறேன்” என்றான். “நீ என்னிடம் எது கேட்டாலும், ஏன் என் அரசில் பாதியையே கேட்டாலும் உனக்குத் தருகிறேன்” என்றும் ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறினான். அவள் வெளியே சென்று, “நான் என்ன கேட்கலாம்?” என்று தன் தாயை வினவினாள். அவள், “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையைக் கேள்” என்றாள்.

உடனே சிறுமி அரசனிடம் விரைந்து வந்து, “திருமுழுக்கு யோவானின் தலையை ஒரு தட்டில் வைத்து இப்போதே எனக்குக் கொடும்” என்று கேட்டாள். இதைக் கேட்ட அரசன் மிக வருந்தினான். ஆனாலும் விருந்தினர் முன் தான் ஆணையிட்டதால் அவளுக்கு அதை மறுக்க விரும்பவில்லை. உடனே அரசன் ஒரு காவலனை அனுப்பி யோவானுடைய தலையைக் கொண்டு வருமாறு பணித்தான். அவன் சென்று சிறையில் அவருடைய தலையை வெட்டி, அதை ஒரு தட்டில் கொண்டு வந்து அச்சிறுமியிடம் கொடுக்க, அவளும் அதைத் தன் தாயிடம் கொடுத்தாள். இதைக் கேள்வியுற்ற யோவானுடைய சீடர்கள் வந்து அவருடைய உடலை எடுத்துச் சென்று ஒரு கல்லறையில் வைத்தார்கள்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

சகோதர அன்பில் நிலைத்திருங்கள். அன்னியரை வரவேற்று விருந்தோம்ப மறவாதீர்கள். இவ்வாறு விருந்தோம்பியதால் சிலர் தாங்கள் அறியாமலே வானதூதர்களை மகிழ்ச்சிப்படுத்தியதுண்டு. சிறைப் பட்டவர்களோடு நீங்களும் சிறைப்பட்டிருப்பதாக எண்ணி அவர்களை நினைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள். துன்புறக்கூடிய உடல் உங்களுக்கும் உள்ளதால், துன்புறுத்தப்படுபவர்களை மறவாதீர்கள். திருமணத்தை அனைவரும் உயர்வாக மதியுங்கள். மணவறைப் படுக்கை மாசுறாமல் இருக்கட்டும். காமுகரும் விபசாரத்தில் ஈடுபடுவோரும் கடவுளின் தீர்ப்புக்கு ஆளாவர். பொருளாசையை விலக்கி வாழுங்கள். உள்ளதே போதும் என்று இருங்கள். ஏனெனில், “நான் ஒருபோதும் உன்னைக் கைவிட மாட்டேன்! உன்னை விட்டு விலகமாட்டேன்” என்று கடவுளே கூறியிருக்கிறார். இதனால், நாம் துணி வோடு, “ஆண்டவரே எனக்குத் துணை, நான் அஞ்ச மாட்டேன்; மனிதர் எனக்கு எதிராக என்ன செய்ய முடியும்?” என்று கூறலாம்.

உங்களுக்குக் கடவுளின் வார்த்தையை எடுத்துச் சொன்ன உங்கள் தலைவர்களை நினைவுகூருங்கள். அவர்களது வாழ்வின் நிறைவை எண்ணிப் பார்த்து, நீங்களும் அவர்களைப்போல நம்பிக்கையுடையவர்களாய் இருங்கள். இயேசு கிறிஸ்து நேற்றும் இன்றும் என்றுமே மாறாதவர்.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Mark 6:14-29 

King Herod had heard about Jesus, since by now his name was well known. Some were saying, ‘John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.’ Others said, ‘He is Elijah’; others again, ‘He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.’ But when Herod heard this he said, ‘It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.’

  Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife whom he had married. For John had told Herod, ‘It is against the law for you to have your brother’s wife.’ As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kill him; but she was not able to, because Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a good and holy man, and gave him his protection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.

  An opportunity came on Herod’s birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for his army officers and for the leading figures in Galilee. When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests; so the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.’ And he swore her an oath, ‘I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.’ She went out and said to her mother, ‘What shall I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the Baptist.’ The girl hurried straight back to the king and made her request, ‘I want you to give me John the Baptist’s head, here and now, on a dish.’ The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he was reluctant to break his word to her. So the king at once sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John’s head. The man went off and beheaded him in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When John’s disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Hebrews 13: 1-8 

Continue to love each other like brothers, and remember always to welcome strangers, for by doing this, some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Keep in mind those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; and those who are being badly treated, since you too are in the one body. Marriage is to be honoured by all, and marriages are to be kept undefiled, because fornicators and adulterers will come under God’s judgement. Put greed out of your lives and be content with whatever you have; God himself has said: I will not fail you or desert you, and so we can say with confidence: With the Lord to help me, I fear nothing: what can man do to me?

  Remember your leaders, who preached the word of God to you, and as you reflect on the outcome of their lives, imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday and as he will be for ever.

மோசேயின் சட்டப்படி தூய்மைச் சடங்கை நிறைவேற்றவேண்டிய நாள் வந்தபோது, குழந்தையை ஆண்டவருக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்க அவர்கள் எருசலேமுக்குக் கொண்டு சென்றார்கள். ஏனெனில், “ஆண் தலைப்பேறு அனைத்தும் ஆண்டவருக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்கப்படும்” என்று அவருடைய திருச்சட்டத்தில் எழுதியுள்ளது. அச்சட்டத்தில் கூறியுள்ளவாறு இரு மாடப்புறாக்கள் அல்லது இரு புறாக்குஞ்சுகளை அவர்கள் பலியாகக் கொடுக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது.

அப்போது எருசலேமில் சிமியோன் என்னும் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் நேர்மையானவர்; இறைப்பற்றுக் கொண்டவர்; இஸ்ரயேலுக்கு வாக்களிக்கப்பட்ட ஆறுதலை எதிர்பார்த்திருந்தவர்; தூய ஆவியை அவர் பெற்றிருந்தார். “ஆண்டவருடைய மெசியாவைக் காணுமுன் அவர் சாகப்போவதில்லை” என்று தூய ஆவியால் உணர்த்தப்பட்டிருந்தார்.

அந்த ஆவியின் தூண்டுதலால் அவர் கோவிலுக்கு வந்திருந்தார். திருச்சட்ட வழக்கத்திற்கு ஏற்பச் செய்ய வேண்டியதைக் குழந்தை இயேசுவுக்குச் செய்து முடிக்கப் பெற்றோர் அதனை உள்ளே கொண்டுவந்த போது, சிமியோன் குழந்தையைக் கையில் ஏந்திக் கடவுளைப் போற்றி, “ஆண்டவரே, உமது சொற்படி உம் அடியான் என்னை இப்போது அமைதியுடன் போகச் செய்கிறீர். ஏனெனில் மக்கள் அனைவரும் காணுமாறு நீர் ஏற்பாடு செய்துள்ள உமது மீட்பை என் கண்கள் கண்டுகொண்டன. இம்மீட்பே பிற இனத்தாருக்கு வெளிப்பாடு அருளும் ஒளி; இதுவே உம் மக்களாகிய இஸ்ரயேலுக்குப் பெருமை” என்றார்.

குழந்தையைக் குறித்துக் கூறியவை பற்றி அதன் தாயும் தந்தையும் வியப்புற்றனர்.

சிமியோன் அவர்களுக்கு ஆசி கூறி, அதன் தாயாகிய மரியாவை நோக்கி, “இதோ, இக்குழந்தை இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுள் பலரின் வீழ்ச்சிக்கும் எழுச்சிக்கும் காரணமாக இருக்கும்; எதிர்க்கப்படும் அடையாளமாகவும் இருக்கும். இவ்வாறு பலருடைய மறைவான எண்ணங்கள் வெளிப்படும். உமது உள்ளத்தையும் ஒரு வாள் ஊடுருவிப் பாயும்” என்றார்.

ஆசேர் குலத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பானுவேலின் மகளாகிய அன்னா என்னும் இறைவாக்கினர் ஒருவர் இருந்தார். அவர் வயது முதிர்ந்தவர். மணமாகி ஏழு ஆண்டுகள் கணவரோடு வாழ்ந்தபின் கைம்பெண் ஆனவர்; அவருக்கு வயது எண்பத்து நான்கு. அவர் கோவிலை விட்டு நீங்காமல் நோன்பிருந்து மன்றாடி அல்லும் பகலும் திருப்பணி செய்துவந்தார். அவரும் அந்நேரத்தில் அங்கு வந்து கடவுளைப் புகழ்ந்து எருசலேமின் மீட்புக்காகக் காத்திருந்த எல்லாரிடமும் அக்குழந்தையைப் பற்றிப் பேசினார்.

ஆண்டவருடைய திருச்சட்டப்படி எல்லாவற்றையும் செய்து முடித்த பின்பு அவர்கள் கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள தங்கள் ஊராகிய நாசரேத்துக்குத் திரும்பிச் சென்றார்கள்.

குழந்தையும் வளர்ந்து வலிமை பெற்று ஞானத்தால் நிறைந்து கடவுளுக்கு உகந்ததாய் இருந்தது.

கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது:

“இதோ! நான் என் தூதனை அனுப்புகிறேன். அவர் எனக்கு முன் வழியை ஆயத்தம் செய்வார்; அப்பொழுது, நீங்கள் தேடுகின்ற தலைவர் திடீரெனத் தம் கோவிலுக்கு வருவார். நீங்கள் ஆவலுடன் எதிர்பார்க்கும் உடன்படிக்கையின் தூதர் இதோ வருகிறார்” என்கிறார் படைகளின் ஆண்டவர்.

ஆனால் அவர் வரும் நாளைத் தாங்கக் கூடியவர் யார்? அவர் தோன்றும்போது நிற்க வல்லவர் யார்? அவர் புடமிடுகிறவரின் நெருப்பைப் போலும் சலவைத் தொழிலாளியின் சவர்க்காரத்தைப் போலும் இருப்பார். அவர் புடமிடுபவர் போலும் வெள்ளியைத் தூய்மைப்படுத்துபவர் போலும் அமர்ந்திருப்பார். லேவியின் புதல்வரைத் தூய்மையாக்கிப் பொன், வெள்ளியைப் போல் அவர்களைப் புடமிடுவார். அவர்களும் ஆண்டவருக்கு ஏற்புடைய காணிக்கை கொண்டு வருவார்கள். அப்பொழுது பண்டைக் காலத்தில் முன்னைய ஆண்டுகளில் இருந்தது போல் யூதாவின் காணிக்கையும் எருசலேமின் காணிக்கையும் ஆண்டவருக்கு உகந்தனவாய் இருக்கும்.

My eyes have seen your salvation

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St.Luke 2: 22-40 

When the day came for them to be purified as laid down by the Law of Moses, the parents of Jesus took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, – observing what stands written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to the Lord – and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

  Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forward to Israel’s comforting and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the Law required, he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:

‘Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace,

just as you promised;

because my eyes have seen the salvation

which you have prepared for all the nations to see,

a light to enlighten the pagans

and the glory of your people Israel.’

As the child’s father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected – and a sword will pierce your own soul too – so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.’

  There was a prophetess also, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married for seven years before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer. She came by just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.

  When they had done everything the Law of the Lord required, they went back to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and he was filled with wisdom; and God’s favour was with him.
