அக்காலத்தில்

மத்தேயு என்பவர் சுங்கச்சாவடியில் அமர்ந்திருந்ததை இயேசு கண்டார்; அவரிடம், “என்னைப் பின்பற்றி வா” என்றார். அவரும் எழுந்து இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்றிச் சென்றார். பின்பு அவருடைய வீட்டில் பந்தியில் அமர்ந்திருந்த போது வரிதண்டுபவர்கள், பாவிகள் ஆகிய பலர் வந்து இயேசுவோடும் அவருடைய சீடரோடும் விருந்துண்டனர்.

இதைக் கண்ட பரிசேயர் அவருடைய சீடரிடம், “உங்கள் போதகர் வரி தண்டுபவர்களோடும் பாவிகளோடும் சேர்ந்து உண்பது ஏன்?” என்று கேட்டனர். இயேசு இதைக் கேட்டவுடன், “நோயற்றவர்க்கு அல்ல, நோயுற்றவர்க்கே மருத்துவர் தேவை. ‘பலியை அல்ல, இரக்கத்தையே விரும்புகிறேன்’ என்பதன் கருத்தை நீங்கள் போய்க் கற்றுக்கொள்ளுங்கள்; ஏனெனில் நேர்மையாளரை அல்ல, பாவிகளையே அழைக்க வந்தேன்” என்றார்.

சகோதரர் சகோதரிகளே,

ஆண்டவர் பொருட்டுக் கைதியாக இருக்கும் நான் உங்களைக் கெஞ்சிக் கேட்கிறேன்; நீங்கள் பெற்றுக்கொண்ட அழைப்புக்கு ஏற்ப வாழுங்கள். முழு மனத்தாழ்மையோடும் கனிவோடும் பொறுமையோடும் ஒருவரையொருவர் அன்புடன் தாங்கி, அமைதியுடன் இணைந்து வாழ்ந்து, தூய ஆவி அருளும் ஒருமைப்பாட்டைக் காத்துக்கொள்ள முழு முயற்சி செய்யுங்கள்.

நீங்கள் ஒரே எதிர்நோக்கு கொண்டு வாழ அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். ஒரே எதிர்நோக்கு இருப்பதுபோல, உடலும் ஒன்றே; தூய ஆவியும் ஒன்றே. அவ்வாறே ஆண்டவர் ஒருவரே; நாம் கொண்டுள்ள நம்பிக்கை ஒன்றே; திருமுழுக்கு ஒன்றே. எல்லாருக்கும் கடவுளும் தந்தையுமானவர் ஒருவரே; அவர் எல்லாருக்கும் மேலானவர்; எல்லார் மூலமாகவும் செயலாற்றுபவர்; எல்லாருக்குள்ளும் இருப்பவர்.

கிறிஸ்து கொடுக்க விரும்பும் அளவுக்கேற்ப நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அருள் அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவரே சிலரைத் திருத்தூதராகவும், சிலரை இறைவாக்கினராகவும், வேறு சிலரை நற்செய்தியாளர்களாகவும், ஆயர்களாகவும், போதகர்களாகவும் ஏற்படுத்தினார். திருத்தொண்டாற்ற இறைமக்களை ஆயத்தப்படுத்தவும், கிறிஸ்துவின் உடலைக் கட்டி எழுப்பவும் இவர்களை அவர் ஏற்படுத்தினார். அதனால் நாம் எல்லாரும் இறைமகனைப் பற்றிய அறிவிலும் நம்பிக்கையிலும் ஒருமைப்பாட்டை அடைவோம். கிறிஸ்துவிடம் காணப்பட்ட நிறைவைப் பெறுமளவுக்கு நாம் முதிர்ச்சி அடைவோம்.

And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

A Reading from the letter of St.Paul to the Ephesians 4: 1–7, 11–13

Brethren: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit _ just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call _ one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
