_Where did John's baptism come from?_

*🕯A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 21:23-27*

He had gone into the Temple and was teaching, when the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him and said, 'What authority have you for acting like this? And who gave you this authority?'

In reply Jesus said to them, 'And I will ask you a question, just one; if you tell me the answer to it, then I will tell you my authority for acting like this.

John's baptism: what was its origin, heavenly or human?' And they argued this way among themselves, 'If we say heavenly, he will retort to us, "Then why did you refuse to believe him?";

but if we say human, we have the people to fear, for they all hold that John was a prophet.'

So their reply to Jesus was, 'We do not know.' And he retorted to them, 'Nor will I tell you my authority for acting like this.'

7 HOLD not my youthful sins against me, but remember me as your faithful love dictates. 

8 INTEGRITY and generosity are marks of Yahweh for he brings sinners back to the path.

9 JUDICIOUSLY he guides the humble, instructing the poor in his way.

*A reading from the Prophet Numbers 24:2-7, 15-17*

Raising his eyes Balaam saw Israel settled tribe by tribe; the spirit of God came on him

and he declaimed his poem, as follows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of the man with far-seeing eyes,

the prophecy of one who hears the words of God. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receives the divine answer, and his eyes are opened.

How fair your tents are, Jacob, how fair your dwellings, Israel,

like valleys that stretch afar, like gardens by the banks of a river, like aloes planted by Yahweh, like cedars beside the waters!

A hero arises from their stock, he reigns over countless peoples. His king is greater than Agag, and his kingship held in honour.

He then declaimed his poem, as follows: The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of the man with far-seeing eyes,

the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, of one who knows the knowledge of the Most High. He sees what Shaddai makes him see, receives the divine answer, and his eyes are opened.

I see him -- but not in the present. I perceive him -- but not close at hand: a star is emerging from Jacob, a sceptre is rising from Israel, to strike the brow of Moab, the skulls of all the children of Seth.

*🕯️மத்தேயு எழுதிய நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து வாசகம் 21: 23-27*

அக்காலத்தில் இயேசு கோவிலுக்குள் சென்று கற்பித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது தலைமைக் குருக்களும் மக்களின் மூப்பர்களும் அவரை அணுகி, எந்த அதிகாரத்தால் நீர் இவற்றைச் செய்கிறீர்? இந்த அதிகாரத்தை உமக்குக் கொடுத்தவர் யார்?'' என்று கேட்டார்கள். இயேசு அவர்களுக்கு மறுமொழியாக, நானும் உங்களிடம் ஒரு கேள்வி கேட்கிறேன். நீங்கள் அதற்கு மறுமொழி கூறினால், எந்த அதிகாரத்தால் இவற்றைச் செய்கிறேன் என்பதை நானும் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்வேன். யோவானுக்கு, திருமுழுக்கு அளிக்கும் அதிகாரம் எங்கிருந்து வந்தது? விண்ணகத்திலிருந்தா? மனிதரிடமிருந்தா?'' என்று அவர் கேட்டார். அவர்கள், `விண்ணகத்திலிருந்து வந்தது' என்போமானால், `பின் ஏன் நீங்கள் அவரை நம்பவில்லை' எனக் கேட்பார். `மனிதரிடமிருந்து' என்போமானால், மக்கள் கூட்டத்தினருக்கு அஞ்சவேண்டியிருக்கிறது. ஏனெனில் அனைவரும் யோவானை இறைவாக்கினராகக் கருதுகின்றனர்'' என்று தங்களிடையே பேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். எனவே அவர்கள் இயேசுவிடம், எங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது'' என்று பதிலுரைத்தார்கள். அவரும் அவர்களிடம், எந்த அதிகாரத்தால் இவற்றைச் செய்கிறேன் என்று நானும் உங்களுக்குக் கூறமாட்டேன்'' என்றார்.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness,

to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was 

not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. And this is the 

testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to 

ask him, “Who are you?” He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am 

not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I 

am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” So they said to him, 

“Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you 

say about yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the 

wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 

(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) They asked him, “Then why 

are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 

John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you 

do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am 

not worthy to untie.” These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, 

where John was baptizing.

The Spirit of the LORD God is upon me, because the LORD has anointed  me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the broken 

hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour, I will 

greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the 

robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in 

it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations
