FIRST READING
"You will be like gods, knowing good and evil"
from the book of Genesis (3, 1-8)
The serpent was the most cunning of all the field animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “So God really said to you, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'? The woman replied to the serpent: "We are eating the fruits of the trees in the garden. But, for the fruit of the tree that's in the middle of the garden, God said, “You shall not eat of it, nor touch it, or you will die.” The snake said to the woman, "Not at all!" You will not die! But God knows that the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil. The woman noticed that the fruit of the tree must be tasty, that it was pleasant to look at and that it was desirable, this tree, since it gave intelligence. She took of its fruit, and ate it. She also gave it to her husband, and he ate it. Then both of their eyes opened and they realized they were naked. They tied fig leaves together, and made loincloths out of them. They heard the voice of the Lord God walking through the garden in the breeze of the day. The man and his wife went and hid themselves from the sight of the Lord God among the trees in the garden.
The Word of the Lord.
