MASS READINGS, WEDNESDAY 23 JUNE 2021, General Week 12
FIRST READING
“Abram had faith in the Lord and the Lord considered him to be righteous. The Lord makes a covenant with him ”
A Reading from the book of Genesis (15, 1-12.17-18)
In those days the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram! I am a shield for you. Your reward will be very great. Abram replied, "My Lord God, what then can you give me? I am going childless, and the heir to my house is Eliezer of Damascus. Abram said again, "You gave me no offspring, and one of my servants will be my heir." Then this word of the Lord was addressed to Abram: "It is not he who will be your heir, but someone of your blood. Then he took him out and said to him: "Look at the sky, and count the stars, if you can ..." And he declared: "Such will be your descendants! Abram had faith in the Lord and the Lord considered him to be righteous.
Then he said: “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur in Chaldea to give you this land as an inheritance. Abram replied, "Lord my God, how will I know that I have inherited it?" "The Lord said to him," Take me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove and a young dove. Abram took all these animals, divided them in two, and placed each half in front of the other; but he did not share the birds. As the birds of prey descended on the corpses, Abram drove them away. At sunset, a mysterious sleep fell on Abram, a dark and deep fear fell on him. After sunset there was thick darkness. Then a smoldering brazier and a flaming torch passed between the pieces of animals. That day, the Lord concludes a covenant with Abram in these terms: “To your descendants I give this land, from the Torrent of Egypt to the Great River, the Euphrates. "
