"The tax collector had become a righteous man, rather than the other"
A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To Luke (18, 9-14)
At that time, to some who were convinced that they were righteous and who despised others, Jesus told the following parable: “Two men went up into the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector (that is, a tax collector). The Pharisee stood and prayed within himself: “My God, I give you thanks because I am not like other men - they are thieves, unjust, adulterers - or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and pay a tenth of whatever I earn. ” The tax collector stood at a distance and did not even dare to raise his eyes to the sky; but he was beating his chest, saying: “My God, show yourself favorable to the sinner that I am!” I tell you: when the latter came down to his house, it was he who had become a righteous man, rather than the other. He who rises will be humbled who lowers will be high. "
