"In order to bring together the scattered children of God"
A Reading From The Holy Gospel According To John (11, 45-57)
At that time, when Lazarus came out of the tomb, many Jews, who had come to Mary and therefore had seen what Jesus had done, believed in him. But some went to the Pharisees to tell them what he had done. The high priests and the Pharisees therefore assembled the Supreme Council; they said, “What are we going to do? This man performs a great number of signs. If we let him do it, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy our holy place and our nation. So one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them: 'You don't understand a thing; you do not see what is your interest: it is better that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish. What he was saying there did not come from himself; But, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation; and it was not only for the nation, it was to bring together the scattered children of God in unity.
From that day on, they decided to kill him. This is why Jesus no longer moved openly among the Jews; he left for the region near the desert, to the city of Ephraim, where he sojourned with his disciples. Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many came up from the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover. They were looking for Jesus and, in the Temple, they said to each other: “What do you think? He surely won't come to the party! The high priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where he was had to report him so that he could be arrested.
