"Are you going to destroy the righteous with the guilty?" "
A Reading from the book of Genesis (18, 16-33)
At the oaks of Mambre, the men got up to go and looked towards Sodom. Abraham was walking with them to lead them back. The Lord had said to himself: "Am I going to hide from Abraham what I want to do?" For Abraham is to become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth are to be blessed in him. In fact, I chose him to order his sons and his descendants to keep the way of the Lord, practicing justice and law; thus, the Lord will fulfill his word to Abraham. "Then the Lord said," How great is the clamor about Sodom and Gomorrah! And their fault, how heavy it is! I want to go downstairs to see if their behavior matches the clamor that has come to me. If it's wrong, I'll admit it. "
The men walked to Sodom, while Abraham dwelt before the Lord. Abraham approached and said, "Are you really going to destroy the righteous with the guilty?" Maybe there are fifty righteous in the city. Are you really going to destroy them? Will you not forgive the whole city because of the fifty righteous who are there? Far be it from you to do such a thing! Make the righteous die with the guilty, treat the righteous the same as the guilty, far from you to act thus! He who judges all the earth, will he not act according to law? The Lord said, "If I find fifty righteous in Sodom, because of them I will forgive the whole city." Abraham replied: "I still dare to speak to my Lord, I who am dust and ashes. Perhaps, out of the fifty righteous, five will be missing: for these five, are you going to destroy the whole town? He said, "No, I won't destroy it, if I find forty-five." Abraham insisted, "Maybe there will only be forty?" The Lord said, "For forty I will not do it." Abraham said, "May my Lord not be angry if I dare to speak again." Maybe there will only be thirty? He said, "If I find thirty, I won't. Abraham then said: "I still dare to speak to my Lord. Maybe there will only be twenty? He said, "For twenty I will not destroy. He said, "Let my Lord not be angry: I will speak only once. Maybe there will only be ten? "And the Lord said:" For ten I will not destroy. " I won't destroy it if I find forty-five. Abraham insisted, "Maybe there will only be forty?" The Lord said, "For forty I will not do it." Abraham said, "May my Lord not be angry if I dare to speak again." Maybe there will only be thirty? He said, "If I find thirty, I won't. Abraham then said: "I still dare to speak to my Lord. Maybe there will only be twenty? He said, "For twenty I will not destroy. He said, "Let my Lord not be angry: I will speak only once. Maybe there will only be ten? "And the Lord said:" For ten I will not destroy. " I won't destroy it if I find forty-five. Abraham insisted, "Maybe there will only be forty?" The Lord said, "For forty I will not do it." When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.
