GOSPEL
“Herod sent to behead John in the prison. John's disciples went to announce it to Jesus "
Alleluia. Alleluia.
Happy are those who are persecuted for righteousness,
for the kingdom of Heaven is theirs!
Alleluia. (Mt 5, 10)
Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 14 : 1-12
During that time,
Herod, who was in power in Galilee,
learned of the fame of Jesus
and said to his servants:
"This one is John the Baptist,
he rose from the dead,
and that is why miracles are performed by him. "
For Herod had had John arrested,
had him shackled and put in jail.
It was because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
Indeed, John had said to him:
"You are not allowed to have her as a wife. "
Herod sought to kill him,
but he was afraid of the crowd
who considered him to be a prophet.
When Herod's birthday came,
the daughter of Herodias danced among the guests,
and it pleased Herod.
So he took an oath
to give her what she asks for.
Pushed by her mother, she says:
"Give me here, on a plate,
the head of John the Baptist. "
The king was annoyed;
but because of his oath and the guests,
he ordered it to be given to him.
He sent John to beheaded in the prison.
The head of it was brought on a plate
and given to the girl,
who brought it to his mother.
John's disciples came to take his body,
which they buried;
then they went to tell Jesus.
- Let us acclaim the Word of God.
