FIRST READING
"From heaven I will rain bread for you"
Reading the Book of Exodus 16 : 2-4.12-15
In those days,
in the wilderness, the whole community of the sons of Israel
complained against Moses and his brother Aaron.
The sons of Israel said to them:
“Ah! It would have been better to die
at the hand of the Lord, in the land of Egypt,
when we were seated near the pots of meat,
when we ate bread to our satiety!
You brought us out into this desert
to starve all these assembled people! "
The Lord said to Moses,
" Behold, I will rain bread for you from heaven.
The people will go out to collect their daily ration every day,
and so I will put them to the test:
I will see if he will work or not according to my law.
I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel.
You will say to them:
'At sunset you will eat meat,
and the next morning you will have enough bread.
Then you will know that I, the Lord, am your God. ' "
That same evening, a flight of quails arose which covered the camp;
and the next morning
there was a layer of dew around the camp.
When the dew layer evaporated,
there was a thin crust on the surface of the desert,
something fine like frost, on the ground.
When they saw this,
the sons of Israel said to each other,
“Mann hou? (Which means: What is it?),
Because they did not know what it was.
Moses said to them,
“This is the bread which the Lord gives you to eat. "
- Word of the Lord.
